Scared.

Post by AnotherMe » Thu Oct 22, 2015 4:34 am

I'm a bit concerned. I smoke. I have to stop. I just can't seem to want to yet. I relapsed about a year or two ago. The cold weather makes me cough and choke.
But what really scares me is, when I DON'T use my Cpap machine I dream I am choking. That's because my throat feels like it's closing up.
I know I should get checked out via an endoscopy. I'm just too scared.
Don't scare me more. lol

Why do you 'don't' use your machine every night (and every nap)? And try to keep your posts in one thread rather than more...

Complain to HR about the guy playing music - this is a Cpap forum.

Try to stay awake later in the evening for a couple of nights til you're used to it... you don't need as many hrs of sleep now that you're on Cpap, so re-learn more 'normal' hours.

AnotherMe,

When my mother was alive, she was able to quit smoking after 30 years of cigarette use. So don't give up. And she lived until her early 90s by the way.

I also have the same question as Julie regarding why you aren't using your machine. Forum members are very good at helping people troubleshoot issues so you might want to take advantage of that.

Good to hear.

So how can the forum help you as I am unclear from your posts?

Like 49er said: What's your question? Are you scared of choking but can't give up cigarettes, so that's what's making you scared? It always seems like it's never time to give up the things we're addicted to, especially cigarettes. The nicotine pushers count on that I find it hard to accept that vaping is safe, tho it is somewhat safer than cigarette smoke or other oral forms of tobacco. One additional thing about smokers is that someone is always around ex-smokers to say: "Just have one cigarette, it can't kill you". People with addictive personalities simply can't have just one or they slide back into their previous destructive habits. It's good you use your machine every night... they do take some getting used to, so keep up the good work.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

You have a reason to be scared if your "throat closes up" when you don't use the machine. That's apnea. So if you don't want to be scared, USE YOUR MACHINE. Every time you sleep. No excuses. It's a no brainer to use the machine to avoid scary apnea, and if you don't use the machine you risk becoming a no brainer.

Good luck with quitting smoking. Your health will improve immensely, you will be able to taste good and smell the roses again. You are worth the effort, so keep on trying.

Hubby quit smoking Good Friday, 1972.
We both brag about it.

It is possible that if you wait for your mind/body which is in an addicted state, to tell you when it is time to quit, you may never hear that message. Perhaps the fear is your body trying to get you to quit.

It probably is, if you don't use your XPAP. Same as the Cigarettes will damage you if you keep smoking. When you really decide to clean up your act, things will change, until then, the damage goes on. Jim

Why stop smoking, if you want to continue to keep putting the poison into your body? Trading one adiction for another, doesn't make sense to me! Jim

Almost every night is not every night. Smoking strike 1 not using XPap every night strike 2 one more and your OUT!!!

I would love to compose words that could convince you to do whatever it takes to stop smoking. I'll work on that as soon as I figure out how to convince myself, a diabetic, to always eat healthy foods.

Never had to quit smoking, but known many who have succeeded. And have known others who smoked till the day they died. I went through a period of a few years on a med that caused addictive behaviors. Thankfully the problem was identified and resolved, but I am glad to have had a glimpse into the world of one with an addiction. It's a vicious cycle of doing what we don't want to do and then beating ourselves up for not being stronger. I was lucky. All I had to do was stop taking the med and the compulsions waned. My hat is tipped to any who fight addictions the hard way. I just encourage you to seriously consider what you want for your future. I am not a smoker, but my lungs were damaged in a chemical accident. Slow suffocation is not a life I would wish on anybody. It's frightening. Maybe it's not too late for you to avoid long time lung damage. Should you decide to quit, I wish you well with your efforts.

Not to sound like a broken record but my mother lived until her early 90s in spite of smoking 30 years and having what I felt was undiagnosed sleep apnea. By the way, I am not mentioning this situation as a recommendation to not quit cigarettes but just wanted to give people hope who think it is too late to quit smoking.

Regarding meds that caused addictive behaviors, on the now defunct Paxil Progress Board, I was stunned at how many people reported that Paxil caused alcoholism when they had never had a problem prior to going on the med. You are lucky the problem was identified and solved in your cause as it sounded like these folks went through h-ll.
