My brand new Resmed Airsense 10 is a lemon

Post by Uncle_Bob » Tue Jul 14, 2015 6:14 am

I must be the only person to purchase two new machines only to have both be faulty. Back in 2013 i purchased a PR One which stared making noises and had to be replaced.
Now my brand new Airsense 10 howls very loudly after about 2 hours of operation. The first time this occurred last nigh i just turned it off and slept for 3 hours without the machine. I woke again during the night and tried again, same thing happened, no noise for the first two hours then a constant howling.

Take a listen to the recording below i made with my phone after siting up and moving my phone around the machine trying to record the sound.
Notice my breathing is kind of normal at the start and then at 49 seconds i hold my breath until the end, you can hear the pulses kick in and the motor whining sound.

http://tinyurl.com/nr6mlyt

Anyone else experience this?

My main worry is that i may be in trouble with regards to the warranty as i have had the machine for over 30 days without using it during that time.

Did you overfill the humidifier tank,by any chance? The A10 appears to be very sensitive to anything exceeding the MAX line. Mine sounded like a steam engine and spit water up my nose a couple of days ago after about an hour or two of use. It appears the culprit was that I had put in a tad too much water in that tiny water tank. Once I emptied some out, the problem stopped immediately. I am not at all impressed by the composition and size of the A10 humidifier tank.

No i didnt over fill the humifier, I started at half full.
cpap.com support thinks it is the mask that it the problem since they never have problems with Resmed machines
I doubt it very much as its the same mask i used with a recent new pillow prior to the new machine with my S9.
So now I have to pay to ship yet another machine back to cpap.com yet again for weeks of evaluation

Someone here was complaining of his wife's A10 whistling. He did something to make the humidifier seat better but didn't think it was a permanent fix.

Can you deal with a local DME? Sounds like you may have fewer problems and fewer shipping costs.

Mine was a lemon too. A local DME is of no help really, except that they may give you a loaner.

That sound made me giggle. My cat came to a complete stop, looking at my Kindle fire wondering what the heck that sound was.

that sounds almost like a mask leak...

having said that, maybe something weird is happening in the filter?

Disconnect the hose from the mask, stick the end of the hose into your mouth and breathe in and out that way a few times. If the sound is still there, it's not the mask. However, if it goes away, it doesn't prove it's the mask.

Edit - Just listened to the file, more thoughts.

Try another hose.
Play around with the humidifier tank, making sure it's not leaking there.
Take out the air filter momentarily.
Disconnect the mask, plug the end of the hose with your thumb.
Disconnect the mask from the CPAP, plug the output of the CPAP with your thumb.
Empty the water tank.
Take the kazoo out of your mouth.

Did you get any impression of which part of the CPAP machine it was coming from?

Thanks for the suggestions and links. I am a engineer and i'm going to give it another go tonight with the hope of trying to find a root cause, i'm not the one to start crying and throwing the toys out of my stroller at the first sign of a problem. I did spend an hour on the machine just resting with no issues this afternoon after opening and closing the humidifier lid and turning the ramp from auto to off.

When i put my ear up close to the machine the noise seems loudest towards the left (facing front) and almost nothing from the humidifier side.

Sorry to hear your having problems....I did have a inhalation noise with the first A10 autoset.....I took it back to my DME and exchanged it for a new one and have had no problems since. In fact my A10 is pretty much silent. Hope you get a exchange....that sound is awful.
It's exactly like that...only totally different !!

The ResMed AirSense 10 has a two year factory warranty. I use the AirSense 10 Autoset. A couple times my machine started to loudly amplify my breathing and I could tell the noise was coming from the humidifier. It took me a while to figure out what the problem was and it turned out that the silicone seal that goes around the inside top of the humidifier was not seated correctly. The last time the noise started I took out the humidifier made sure the silicone seal was seated correctly and the noise went away.

You also might want to check the silicone seal in the back of the humidifier compartment.
It should contact both holes on the tank, even though it may not look like it would.

How strange, mine just did that tonight! pull the water tank and look into the machine. There are two silicon gaskets, one is making the noise. I ran a finger around both to make sure they were round and not getting caught when the tank is inserted.

Noise was gone. sounded just like your recording.
Sleeping MUCH better now
