Hi guys,
I've been waking up 3-4 times a night, sometimes with a racing heart while on my CPAP. My AHI is pretty low, usually below 2, but my resp. rate is all over the map, and it looks like I take a huge breath in and out, and then I wake up with a 80 to 100 bpm heart rate. As soon as I wake up, it slows down. My blood oxygen is usually betweek 94 and 98, so that doesn't seem to suffer. Any ideas on the attached chart and what might be going on? How does my resp rate vary so much? Seems weird to me. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!!!!!

Do you happen to have a graph of your oximetry data?
SpO2 96+% and holding...

If this was my chart, I'd say the periods of faster, uneven breathing were REM sleep - not a bad thing. My bathroom breaks generally follow the REM sleep, but after a year or so on the pump those have reduced in number.

Hi CapnLoki, I hope its just REM but not sure why the rise in heart rate later in my sleep.
Thanks,

suggest you import the oximetry data into sleepyhead
Get OSCAR
Accounts to put on the foe list: dataq1, clownbell, gearchange, lynninnj, mper!?, DreamDiver, Geer1, almostadoctor, sleepgeek, ajack, stom, mogy, D.H., They often post misleading, timewasting stuff.

My pulse ox doesnt seem to import correctly. the file format is wrong and when I change it and force an import, it puts the SpO2 where the pulse rate should be. The chart is not useful.

what do you have?
also, the current version of SH handles oximetry data better.

The pulse rate data does not look like its synced to the sleepyhead data- Are the times skewed?
It would be no surprise if the pulse when up 20 beats during an active dream.

The autonomous nervous system changes with sleep. Heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate are lowered to adapt to the reduced metabolic needs during normal sleep. Consequently, the mean heart-rate values drop from wakefulness to light sleep and further to deep sleep. During REM sleep heart rate increases again showing a high variability, which may exceed the variability observed during quiet wakefulness

that's a 'upgrade your sleepyhead' situation. I saw stuff like that when working with mark on the current version, it means that the data isn't being interpreted right, those abrupt, impossible reading changes, etc.

Your oximetry graph seems to indicate that you never really got into REM sleep but were on the verge. This is where you need an EEG to better understand what is going on.
REM sleep seems to show up as a small drop in SPO2 and it becomes variable within a range. This is accompanied by a slight increase in pulse rate and the pulse also becomes a little erratic within a range.
Perhaps you were having vivid dreams of making fortunes in the stock market... or something equally as delightful.

Thanks guys for all the feedback so far. I upgraded to the latest version of Sleepyhead and the same thing happens. Anyway, any more feedback on my issue would be appreciated. The wake ups every few hours are making sleep pretty difficult.

did you upgrade and read in new data? or just upgrade?
if you just upgraded, you need to tell it to forget the oximetry data, and reimport.

Hi Hanz. I'm thinking along the same lines as Hosecrusher. You may be having some very "sweet" dreams going into REM and producing, as would be expected, some pretty good rises in both pulse and respiration rate. These might just be very healthy and rather desirable REM dreams.
