6 days at pressure 14

Post by FranckDG » Thu May 07, 2015 11:25 am

I received my first CPAP machine last Friday (a brick). I should be receiving a brand new S9 Autoset today with nasal pillow mask and get rid of that brick.

Anyway... My experience so far with the brick locked at pressure 14 with full face mask has been as follow:
- Got used to the mask after 2-3 nights
- Woke up because of leaks when reaching pressure 14 almost every hour for the first 3 days then it got better (I learned how to better adjust my mask). Still waking up every 2-3 hours though...
- Once I got over these 2 issues, I started running into the bigger issue: aerophagia. I'm just getting inflated like a balloon all night and at first it was just bloating, burping and farting galore all morning but for the past 3 days it's also been explosive diarrhea from 5am (at which point I have to stop the machine) until about 10am. For reference, I typically hit the sack around 11:30pm so at 5am, I've been on the machine for about 5.5 hours.

Has anybody else here experienced this?

I am getting started on the Autoset tonight with a lower setting (I'll start with 8 with a special pillow to keep me on my side). I saw my doctor 2 days ago and she agreed that pressure 14 was probably too high for me (my AHI is 17.7) and that if I can stay on my side, I can probably use a lower setting.

For people who have experienced these symptoms, do they improve with a lower setting? Does the type of mask matter? I guess I'll find out soon but just asking...

Thanks!

There has been a stomach virus going around. You sure you don't have that?

If your pressure is set at 14, you should reach that pressure in a matter of minutes and it stays there. I don't understand when you say that " when the pressure reaches 14 you wake up because of leaks". If your AHI is 17 at a pressure of 14, normally it would go up at a lower pressure...Time will tell.

I guess it's possible:) There's been something going around the office... Maybe it gets accentuated by the aerophagia symptoms

The machine I had was set to 14 but you could press a button to set it to 4 and it would gradually get to 14 in 45 minutes at which point I would be asleep.

My AHI is at 17.7 with no CPAP machine.

You bet! You should feel a lot better on the lower setting. I'm surprised your DME didn't reset the machine at lower pressure based on your last visit with your doc.

Just for your information - AHI and pressure have no relationship with each other. AHI is just an average of the number of times your breathing stops, or tries to, per hour. The pressure you need to stop it from doing that depends on your physical needs. You can have an AHI of 70+ and still only need a pressure of 5 - 7.

My husband is a new CPAP user. He developed diarrhea about 4 days in. As an experiment, he has not used his mask for 6 days and the diarrhea has not stopped. I read somewhere that the esophageal sphincter can get irritated and not function properly, letting air in. Considering the dental device, and starting our second month of Singing for Snorers.
