Vitamin B-12

Post by Huh? » Sat Mar 07, 2015 9:10 am

I started taking this seven weeks ago and I want to get another bottle.

My energy level is definitely up and I am sleeping better. Maybe this is because of more time in the gym during this time, but in any case I want to continue B-12.

I am taking 2500 mcg daily. My question is what is an appropriate dose?

Thanks.

I take 6000 mcg a day (sublingual). I test dangerously low for both B12 and D. I have diabetes and use insulin and also Metformin (Glucophage) which are both known to deplete B12 and D. Hubby takes 2500 mcg of B12 but he has no health issues.

Take an amount which will keep your serum level at 500-900 pg/mL.
500 mcg/day does it for me.

Thank you. I wonder if this is important enough to go to the trouble of a blood test? What are the side effects of oversupplementation?

I am thinking to cut it back to 500 mcg and leave it at that.

Thank you. I have no health problems except OSA. The last time I had an annual physical, my doctor acted like, "Why are you coming here, you are so healthy."

I would definitely get a blood test to be on the safe side. I don't know the side effects of over supplementation of B12 but I am sure they can't be good. If you don't get a blood test, I would stick to your plan to cut it to 500mcg.

My mother gets a shot of B12 monthly and has for the last 20 years or more. She doesn't seem to digest it so the shot is what works.

B12 is vital for brain function, lack of it can cause dementia like effects. The only way to get B12 naturally is by eating meat and other animal products.

Too high of a B-12 level can cause many dangerous symptoms.....Look it up!. Get a blood test first. Even my Senior Vitamin has 400% of daily requirement

Here is a good discussion of the B-12 issue.
http://www.mayomedicallaboratories.com/ ... etive/9154

If you have been prescribed a B-12 supplement either orally or by injection, you should be having routine testing until your condition is stabilized. Too low a level is not good, too high a level is also not good. As Goldilocks said "the is just right." Just so, there is a just right B-12 level range.

I'm confused. I thought we pee out excess B12. So wouldn't it just be people who have an abnormally high test level that aren't from taking the supplement the ones in danger?
I know high levels can mean leukemia or liver problems. I get tested for liver function due to being on Metformin. My doctor was the one who told me to take 6000mcg per day of the B12 and in all these years has never said to stop.

You need a blood test to check your B-12 levels. I think a reading of over 95 is considered very high and should be a warning to stop any supplements.

I took 1000 mcg of B12 (methylcobalamin form) a day for a long time. I finally had my B12 tested about a month ago and my result was flagged as high (1161 pg/mL). I had not taken B12 that day, in fact I think I laid off it for 3 days prior. I don't have liver issues or leukemia. Haven't really known what to make of my result but I've cut way back on the B12.

LSAT, could you provide a reference please? What units of measure are you referring to in "over 95"?
For comparison, see the references earlier provided by myself and JDS74
