Respiration rate

Post by linesandlines » Tue Jan 20, 2015 1:45 pm

Hi all,
I'm having a mooch around the boards today, downloading my Sleepyhead data etc and trying to understand it. A couple of questions;

- Respiration rate. Mine hits 50 every night. Is that 50 breaths a minute? I don't think I could breathe that quickly when awake! What could it indicate?

- Clear Airway events - should this be 0, or is it normal to have a few CA events every night?

Thanks in advance.

I imagine it's 50/hr. And it's normal to have a few CAs, usually on going to sleep, and while waking (or just before).

The respiration should be read as per minute. 20 is the "normal" respiration per minute. From what I understand when a person enters REM, respiration will increase. You need to look at your Tidal Volume, Minute Vent, Inspiratory Time, and Expiratory Time for a better picture.

It that is 50/Hr. wouldent that mean an AHI = 50 ... each one 50 sec long ???

That would be 10 sec to breath and 60 sec to hold your breath.
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

That means 50 breaths per minute, it's just too much. Your body has to work hard to maintain the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide.

yes, 50 breaths a minute, or a little over 1 second for inhale/exhale.

Respirations are measured in breaths per minute. How long were you at that rate? If it's just a spike then back down, probably not meaningful. I had a straight up spike that had a break in the graph just before the spike, not sure why. But I don't believe this was accurate. I didn't find anything to corelate it to in the other graphs or events.

Hard to discern from what they wrote if that was a max they hit or their 95%. I hit a high around 45 when I am masked up and getting into bed, but my 95% is typically around 12.5 - 18.

Over the past few nights, it's an average of 4 times a night I hit that level, and stay there for a minute or two. Probably just insignificant peaks then?

Looks like my 95% is between 20 & 30 breaths per min.

In Sleepyhead...if you look at the statistics area on the left side...put your curser over "respiration rate"...it defines it.
