How Fat Are You?
Hi, I'm new here.
I am 5' 2", and I deliberately have no idea what I weigh. I'm about a size 20 though. I am not ashamed of how I look nor do I actively attempt to lose weight. My aim is to be healthy no matter what my size. I eat well, do strength training 3 days a week and cardio 3 times, plus I don't have a car so I do a lot of walking besides; I don't have any cholesterol, blood sugar, joint pain problems, etc. I've had snoring and sleep problems my whole life no matter how fat or thin I have been, I have a very squashed-up ear-nose-throat system inherited from my mother and my dad (who was thin) snored heavily too. I'll be getting my first CPAP machine in a couple of weeks, I'm really hoping it will help with being so tired, and also perhaps alleviate depression and anxiety symptoms.

I may still have apnea after I lose my weight, but the joint pain IS getting to me. It's difficult to be on my feet for any length of time, and I'm looking forward to having a "lighter step" I will try to get as thin as I can to get rid of my apnea...hope it works! (even though it might take me a while) I've known I've had apnea for 8 years. I could have eating just a little bit less and been thin by now EIGHT years

I'm 5'4" and 22 yrs old next week. Well, before I started with the sleep apnes, I weighed 150lbs and I had under 10% body fat. In fact my swimming coaches were encouraging me to gain a few (in fat). The sleep apnea hit, I started sleeping 12ish hours/day and gained 60lbs in about a year. Just pre-diagnosis I was too tired to cook/eat. I ate an apple/orange a day plus a sandwich for dinner. Did that for 3 months w/o losing a lb. Normal cholesteral/thyroid/blood sugar/ blood pressure. That's about it. Hopefully the cpap will help me lose some lbs or give me the energy to swim again!

I'm 34, male, 6'1", and the last time I weighed myself, which was a while ago, I weighed 330. I have a very large frame, and I imagine my fighting weight would be about 230, so I've got a c-note to lose. Due to my frame size, the weight hasn't been a problem until recently, but I'm sure it has greatly exacerbated my apnea. Since the other alternative is going under the knife for bypass surgery, the prospect of starvation dieting and 4 or 5 hours of exercise a day started looking a lot more palatable, so that's what I'm doing now. I don't what my blood pressure, cholesterol, or other sundry levels are, because I only go to the doctor if I'm on death's door. This is largely because I got really tired of listening to the sanctimonious bastages harping at me about my weight. None of them could seem to get it through their heads that the only way I'd ever reach my chart weight, 180, is if if were dying of cancer.
To sleep, perchance to dream....
I had a Dr. want me on a 1100 cal a day diet, I was then six foot, 280 lb, Working as a heavy mechanic on heavy equiptment in the field, I did thirty times the physical effort he did.
I told him, "I get that many calories just smelling my bacon fry in the morning", and walked out. Jim

well i am 28, i'm 6'3" and have a large frame, i was at 407 back in march, but after my doc ran my blood tests he found out i was pre-diabetic and had some bad cholesterol, he put me on a diet, so far i have lost 37 pounds and last time i checked i was at 370 a week ago, so i guess i am going in the right direction now, i want to get back to my high school weight of 275, not too heavy and definitely not skinny, but to me that was an ideal weight, so that's my goal.

Get Blown!
When I joined this group I was well over 450 pounds. When my picture was taken I was very close to 400 then. I now weigh 345 as of last week in the doctors office. My doctor almost did hand stands and cartwheels.

I'm a 35 year old guy, 5' 10" and about 230 the last time I weighed myself. I've been losing weight due to exercise and limiting my portions.

Alright - since everyone else is doing it, I guess I'll chime in. My best guess is that I am around 52 years old and weigh in at real close to 300 lbs.. Was around 210 and in the best shape of my life until I met the ex. When she started doing the cooking my diet took a complete flip flop - very tasty, but very fattening! Had to stop going to the gym 5 days a week and doubled the work load to support her and her two kids - the combination of the two is when the weight gain started to take off. Ussually ate junk food for lunch and dinner do to late hours. Started hearing more and more complaints about my weight going up and my snoring getting worse and worse. Wife started inviting another man into my bed while I was at work. To make a long story short - that's all been over for quite some time now, I have primary custody of my two boys and could not be happier, aside from my health issues. Was a time when I seriously concidered doin' some real whoopin' on the guy but after taking into concideration the seven years of marriage I decided that really the worst thing I could possibly do to the guy was to just let him have her! And it would probably have jepordized the custody issue, which was really my primary concern. Worked out great! Anyway - life is sooo.. much more peacefull now - it's just me and my boy's and I'm just peachy with that right now. Would realy like to start in on an exercise program and get the weight back down - but need some energy first, am hoping that the cpap will take care of that for me soon. Ya know, I'm glad to see that there are also normal weight people that have this apnea problem because when I told my doctor that I always have felt tired even when I was at 210 and lean - he shrugged it off like I didn't know what I was talking about! Why do doctors do that!!! Happens to me all the time - no matter how clearly I state things, they don't bother to listen. -- But I guess that's another topic all together. -- BT
I'm 35, and my wife and I are both hugely fat. She's a size 26/28, and I have no idea what my real weight is, but let's just leave it at "huge". :/

Studies show that OSA gets worse if you are over a weight "norm" for your body type; fat or lean muscle mass. Weight is weight and that is one of the bad guys when it comes to OSA.snork1 wrote:intertesting phrasing and assumptions on the topic.
But i will throw my wrench into the works or stats into the mix.
I don't consider myself fat or overweight. Of course I don't believe the human body only has a plus or minus 5 pound "ideal weight" tolerance spread for every physique in the world.
All that being said, I am 52 years old, 5foot 11inches, 197 pounds and would look silly or have to lose a fair amount of muscle if I weighed 20 pounds less or whatever is "approved" weight. Probably tougher to do regular mtn biking or knock off the 16 mile hike planned for this coming weekend, if I was a wimpy string bean.
Of course if your weight is enough to be getting in the way and makes you feel physically bad, then maybe it IS "fat". And MAJOR amounts of extra weight probably does make OSA worse, even if its not the original or only cause.
Still think its an interesting assumption for the title of the thread.....
The only difference between fatties (myself included) and muscle-bound types is that when we thrash around trying to wake our bodies up we just roll on stuff and break it. Muscle bounds tend to thrash their hands around and accidently send the nightstand sailing across the room. The wife goes flying regularly... she buys another bed to sleep on and it goes back to the television life of the 50's.
