Changed my filter for the first time
Changed my filter for the first time
I changed the filter on my S9 Auto for the first time today - 6 months since I bought the machine. The recommendation was to change it every 6 months. I was amazed and appalled to see the amount of crud, dust, etc., on the old filter. I live in a condo that faces on to a major arterial, so maybe the dust and crud accumulates quickly. I think I'll be changing it every 3 months in the future, new filters are cheap. I just thought I would report this, maybe other newbies could learn from my experience.

Re: Changed my filter for the first time
I was under the impression that the replacement schedule was 1 month for filters.

Medicare provides 2 disposable filters per month (this is the white filter for respironics) and 1 washable filter every 6 months (black foam filter).
Personally, I replace both every month as it only costs a couple bucks and my house is pretty dusty.

Re: Changed my filter for the first time
Definitely the white filter should be changed every couple of weeks.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO-HOO what a ride!

Thanks for this. That is amazing, and informing! Where did I get the idea that the replacement schedule was 6 months? No wonder my filter was so filthy. I'll start changing it once a month, starting now.

Re: Changed my filter for the first time
Larger/Thicker grey foam filter = 6 months
Thinner White Filter = 2 weeks - 1 months
If you left the white filter in for 6 months you may have harmed your machine and/or shortened its life since it had to exert significantly more effort to pull air through that cruddy white filter that was so badly clogged. The machines are not meant to have to work so hard under such conditions.

I didn't realize there were two kinds of filters for the S9. The people who sold me the machine certainly didn't mention anything about that. If there's been damage done to the machine, it is now done, and no point in me worrying about it. It still works perfectly. I'll stay on top of it in the future, now that I know. Thanks for the information.

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you deal with idiots, and even worse, this is a very common occurrence in medicine. You always need to double check everything, down to the smallest detail. They don't give a crap about your machine and if it breaks.

did you perchance stop to notice that the OP has a different brand of machine, and thus different filter requirements?Paralel wrote:Larger/Thicker grey foam filter = 6 months

Re: Changed my filter for the first time
in this particular instance, you should ignore paralel, because he's talking about a different brand of machine, with a tiny little filter that's about 1/3rd (correction:1/2) the size of the resmed filters....Paul_H wrote:Paralel wrote:Larger/Thicker grey foam filter = 6 months

there are two kinds of filters for the S9, the regular one, and the hypoallergenic one, they're both white.

Yeah, they were idiots, for sure. The "sleep technician" who sold me the machine, and demonstrated its features, was not even aware of some of the features that I discovered later on, mostly by following this group, such as "Auto-on," and the ability to separate the heat and humidity functions, if you so desire. He was amazed when I showed him how to do that at our last meeting.

Ah, thanks palerider, I did not notice that. Maybe my machine will be OK. I've seen conflicting advice about the advisable frequency of filter changing, ranging from 1 month to 6 months. Since they are cheap enough, I think I will err on the side of caution in the future, and change monthly, or perhaps bimonthly in the winter, when my windows are closed and therefore there is less pollution coming in.

I'd be willing to bet the price of a replacement machine that your machine is fine.Paul_H wrote:Ah, thanks palerider, I did not notice that. Maybe my machine will be OK. the manual (which I figure is probably the best source, since it's not directly involved in selling you more stuff, says:
of course the "more often if necessary" pretty much applies to *any* filter...Replace the air filter every six months (or more often if necessary).
I like the filter design in the resmed *much* better than the prs1, it's larger, and there's more space behind it so more of the filter is effectively used, whereas on the prs1, it's mainly just a hole with the diameter of the small dimension of the filter.... thus the much longer change intervals in the s9.
my only wish was that they'd made the filter cover clear, not gray, so you could see at a glance when it was getting dirty.
mine goes 6 months easy without getting too grey looking.... all depends on how much cruft is in the air around the machine.

Re: Changed my filter for the first time
I thought they were substantially similar between the two machines. Sorry about that, my bad, I apologize.

I guess the air in your place is just full of crap. In that case maybe you should consider an indoor air purifier? I'd been running my filter for 3 months and there I can't see anything on it.

Re: Changed my filter for the first time
No worries! I appreciate it that you tried to help. I like to sleep with my window open if it's warm enough out, and as I said earlier, my condo unit faces on a major road, which no doubt produces a lot of dust and other particles. I think if I start changing my filter monthly that should be good enough. I'm going to start visually checking it periodically now. At least this episode has taught me something.Paralel wrote:I thought they were substantially similar between the two machines. Sorry about that, my bad, I apologize.
