Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

I remember seeing some news stories about this. Check out Time Magazine from November 23, 2012:
http://healthland.time.com/2012/11/23/n ... -syndrome/
It's called "Sleeping Beauty Syndrome" (there's another name for it as well). Very rare, but perhaps your houseguest is one of the unlucky ones.

Hopefully I can make her understand this is a real problem without sounding like I am just being a bitch about it. Living with us can't be easy but without us she probably wouldn't have a roof over her head.

I am not normally in favor of medications if something natural might work. However, this does seem to offer some hope for restoring the normal circadian rhythm of sleep and wake cycles, so I say discuss it with the house-guest's doctor (with her present, of course!).

It is your roof and you make the rules. One of them is getting her medical issues dealt with so she can get her own roof again. If it is depression, working out will deal with it as well as medication according to most studies.

Yes the flu, NOT the old, discontinued vaccine caused the problem. AND that flu is back, so get your shots.

Sometimes type 1 diabetes occurs spontaneously in adults as a complication of an infection, most commonly the flu.
The virus KILLS the pancreas.

The vaccine, Pandemrix containing adjuvant ASO3 caused more cases of narkolepsy than vaccines without. Indeed caused bacteria and viruses also narkolepsy, for those with a specific set of genes.
I also believe that bacteria and viruses can cause sleep disorders as well.
But that's another story.

The defective adjunct, which was only used (in Europe) for a short time, due to emergency (epidemic) status,
was the factor which caused the complications. The adjunct is no longer being used.
Vaccine is always far safer than the alternative.

Yes, that's right. Too bad my wife's niece took the vaccine. We suspect it caused her nerve destruction. She is 5 years now and will not be 10.

Lazer, so sorry to hear about your wife's niece. It may seem possible that the vaccine caused the problem. However, unfortunately it seems that some people are genetically more inclined to have adverse reactions to vaccines (and other pharmaceutical products). There is no way of predicting who will react this way and who will not. I have even seen a suggestion recently (http://www.cidd.psu.edu/research/synops ... apertussis, for example)that by altering the immune response to one bacterium or virus with a vaccine may increase the risk of an infection with a similar bug, so it may not be the vaccine that directly caused the problem. Medicine is so complex that we have to be diligent in checking things out and discussing with our doctors.

The young woman is almost certainly suffering from depression.
She will need professional help, a psychiatrist if possible.

Please DO NOT advise people against getting the flu shot.

We have an epidemic of H1N1 this year that is killing middle age healthy people.

I don't want to alarm anyone but this is the worst I have ever seen. You don't expect a healthy 35 year old to catch the flu and in a week end up in the intensive care unit on a respirator with kidney failure only to die despite best efforts.

This year Get the Shot!
