Does anyone sleep on their back all night
Does anyone sleep on their back all night
Before CPAP I used to toss and turn. Now I sleep on my back all night long. Does anyone else do this?

I used to sleep on my side, but now I sleep only on my back, this is partially due to other medical problems I have as well.

Pre-cpap, I slept on my side much more than now.
I still favor my left side, but I mix it up more.

And if I sleep on my back I get sky high apneas so I do everything I can to keep me off the flat on my back.

Still toss and turn. There is no position I could sleep in all night. When it happens I wake up with something numb, be it an elbow, a leg or an arm. It can be a little alarming shaking a floppy arm back to the land of the living.Mr19 wrote:Before CPAP I used to toss and turn. Now I sleep on my back all night long. Does anyone else do this?

95% of the night on my back.
Only turn over momentarily on my side when my back complains it needs a break.
Best wishes, Nate

Mr. 19
I sleep the entire night on my back. I've had a three level lumbar fusion and any other position awakens me immediately with pain.
When I had my first sleep study, I had the sleep doc pretty confused when my PLMS (periodic limb movement in sleep) with arousal at an index of 0.0/hour and a PLMS without arousal at an index of 0.0/hour.
You gotta love consistency!

I am just like Nate except it is probably closer to 98% for me. My OSA is not positional so I sleep the way that is most comfortable for me and let the machine do what it does best... keep my airway open .
Well it is that time again to hose up and drift off to PAP land. Good night all!

Re: Does anyone sleep on their back all night
I have to be on my side to get to sleep. I believe I slept like that most nights. However according to my sleep study reports I sleep mostly supine, and since I've started my xpap therapy I wake up lying on my back.
Re: Does anyone sleep on their back all night
Hi Mr19. Before cpap I slept on my sides and tossed and turned. When I first began cpap, I slept on my back constantly for the first few months because I believed that was the only position in which I would not disturb the mask seal and I erroneously thought that a near-perfect seal was crucial. With experience and carefully positioning my head on the bed pillow every time I turn, I learned to sleep on my sides as well as supine. But for the most reliable seal, I have to say I default to supine when the seal gets finicky. Keep in mind though that a goodly amount of leakage (mid-twenties cmH2O) is actually acceptable by most cpap machines and not problematic to effective treatment. I know it's sort of hard to believe that, but I find it really is the case.Mr19 wrote:Before CPAP I used to toss and turn. Now I sleep on my back all night long. Does anyone else do this?
I better go to sleep now, 'cause Avi's on my case about not sleeping enough night hours.
Good luck to you, 19.

Re: Does anyone sleep on their back all night
I sleep on my back even though my OSA was slightly worse in this position per my sleep study. I barely move during the night. My AHI is consistently < 2 so this doesn't affect my treatment.
Pre-CPAP I was a belly sleeper. I get a bit of aerophagia when I sleep on my sides.

IMHO the answer is to find the Holy Grail of Masks that work just right for you. I will take lots of time and many different masks but it is sure worth i you find THE ONE......

Re: Does anyone sleep on their back all night
I used to toss and turn and wake up with the blankets, pillows, spouse, etc. on the floor. But since I've had my machine, I generally wake up in the same position I remember falling asleep in. Blankets and pillows are where I left them, and my wife isn't filing divorce paperwork. I think it may be partly due to the fact that now since you don't have to struggle to breathe as much when you sleep, your body doesn't feel the need to thrash around in your bed.Mr19 wrote:Before CPAP I used to toss and turn. That makes a lot of sense to me. I remember before I started PAP therapy my wife saying that I used to be fighting all night long trying to sleep, when I know now that I was fighting all night long just trying to stay alive. For me the change produced by the nightly addition of a machine, mask, and hose, has been miraculous, life changing (plus no more divorce paperwork or angry, sleep deprived looks of my pending demise ).

Re: Does anyone sleep on their back all night
For the first year of my CPAP therapy I was so happy to find that I could sleep on my back that I was maintaining a ratio of 90% back sleeping (supine) and 10% side sleeping. Towards the end of that period, I noticed I was starting to get some hourly arousal events with tell-tale spiking in my flow rate. I suspected this was my tongue sliding back in my throat, so as an experiment I started sleeping mostly on my side. I took notes with info from Sleepyhead and eventually came to the conclusion that back sleeping was no longer working for me. I now use a chin strap and sleep on my side 90% of the time, the other 10% is back sleeping. It's an ongoing experiment, however I really do miss sleeping mostly on my back.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
