Can you trust the sleep lab technician?

Post by danielqk » Wed May 01, 2013 4:09 pm

My AHI is 61 in the last sleep test and normally I woke up several times during a night
due to OA or CA. I will have another sleep test next week. To be able to sleep in the
lab I have to use sleeping pill Ambient.
My Dr said if you can not wake up due to sedative, the lab technician will wake you up.
Can I trust the lab technician?
Has anyone used sleeping pill during sleep test study?

I thought about taking a sleeping pill during my sleep study, because of nervousness. Fortunately I was able to fall asleep very easily, even though I was very nervous. I think if you talk to the sleep tech. and tell them that you have taken one, they should be pretty cool about saying 'Ok, I will make sure to wake you up'. My sleep tech. explained everything very clearly and answered all my questions, so I hope you have the same results. Just be straight up and clear with them. If you don't like what you hear, talk to a doctor. Good luck!
Absolutely no regrets!
I never did mind the little things.

I use Ambien during both my sleep studies (2 nights..one diagnostic and second the titration)...still barely slept.
When it comes time to get up..if you are asleep the sleep tech will come wake you up because he wants to go home too.
He doesn't get to go home until after you do. He will want to go home.
You won't be so far under that you can't be woke up easily anyway.

My concern is during OA or CA and I can not wake up by myself due to sedative of
sleeping pill so I have to rely on lab technician. I have heard some patient deaths because
they could not wake up during OA or CA.

Lab tech will be monitoring all your vital signs...if he sees something go really bad...low oxygen or bad heart rate or whatever...he won't sit back and do nothing. Looks bad for a patient to die on one's watch.

Ambien doesn't really knock a person out that much anyway. It doesn't really suppress the respiratory system either.
Now large quantities of morphine like drugs..yeah they can suppress respiration and knock you out much deeper.

If Ambien were that sedating and that dangerous then people wouldn't be taking it at home all the time.
It isn't the big knock out drug where someone could cut your arm off and not know it type of drug.

I use an ambien for my sleep study. Only time I have ever taken one. I figured I was going to be all wired up with my breathing, oxygen, heart rate, etc all being monitored. What better place to be when trying out a medication?

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?
