A Rather Unique Approach To Stopping Eye Leaks

Post by MagsterMile » Tue Mar 12, 2013 12:06 pm

I was getting a ton of eye leaks from the mask last night so I got up and tried to think of a material to block the airflow to my eyes. Reseating the mask was not working. The leaks weren't heavy duty but enough to keep me awake. Got up and tried to think of at a temporary solution. I thought that I need to find a very thin pliable small scrap of material. Couldn't think of anything right away but then I thought, 'Why Not'? Took a nylon 'knee high' stocking (a clean one ) and draped it along one side the mask, over the nose bridge of the mask and back down along the side to the mouth. Tucked it in as gently as possible so as to not interfere with whatever seal I was getting up to that point. It worked and I no longer felt the cold air blowing into my eyes and I was able to get some sleep.

Brilliant!
I made a mask liner for my old style zzz-mask full face mask out of a 3" section of tights leg.
Just snug enough to stay in place, and like most good mask liners, helps with the leaks.

If you had just pulled it down over your head, you could have used it when you awoke to rob a 7-11!

Ahhh perfect timing for me! Doctor just switched me to auto pap mode and higher pressures. I have been encountering eye leaks with this new change. Gonna try this... thanks!!!

Why not use one of the mask liners available for just such a problem....

Once I get a permanent mask I will certain consider a mask liner (padacheek sounds very good from the description online). This is a mask that I'm trying on a temporary basis. I'm sure I won't keep it. I have about 3 weeks left on my trial basis and there are just too many leaks mouth and eye (I can get the mouth leaks to stop fairly easily but the eye leaks are persistent!).

My mom has been having leaks in her eyes recently, so she got swim goggles and wears those. She says they work great for her.

What a great idea about swim goggles. The mask that I'm currently trying out will definitely work with them. Used the 'knee high' again last night and it worked for a 2nd night.

Just used your solution on the Philips Amara, and it solved leaks, sound, and uncomfortable pressure on the nose. You are a GENIUS

Onyix Silicone Sleep Shield - 11112 ....This is one of my better purchases of all time. A little pricey at Amazon.com but well worth it. They keep out the light (total blackout) plus any air escaping from your mask! Also super comfortable!!!

I tried their Quartz eye shield, as I prefer to see, even if it's mostly dark.
The eye cups were way too shallow, my lashes rubbed on the back side-driving me NUTS!
The cups were also too far apart, allowing massive leakage
(an adjustable bridge may have perhaps cost them a whole nickel).
Not worth the nearly 40 bucks I paid. Very lucky to be able to send them back.
If they would make a smaller size, with room for lashes, I could wear my élan again.

I have had patients in the past (very few) use eye goggles. Looked like regular swimming goggles to me but I never asked specifically what type they were. Usually it was patients that had been on cpap / bipap for a while and were on pretty high pressures. Nothing seemed to work except the goggles. I couldn't argue if it worked. It did look funny though seeing the pt using a mask, goggles, some chinstraps etc.. But if it works....

I find using anything firm on my head or face is so irritating. I could never sleep with goggles on. I can't even sleep with any silicone mask. I use the Sleepweaver Elan fabric mask which I have adapted so the leaks are very minimal. I found that if I used small makeup remover pads which I stuck in place with Micropore skin tape (a very thin medical tape) sealing the chance of leaks to my eyes (the tape joining with a V shape under each eye) is the best way to control the leaks. This is very effective. I usually use the pads a couple of times with the same tape on them. You need to be very gentle when removing the tape. Make sure you support the skin while removing it very slowly, so there is no chance of tearing the skin.

I ordered the mask liner from Pad a Cheek and it didn't make my mask fit much better according to the machine. To be honest Karen doesn't say that the liner is a leak stopper, it's just for comfort and my mask has been more comfortable. I've now ordered a polymer cushion and am waiting for it to come in. I hope that it works out. I've quit "listening" to my machine as far as the mask fit. I just want low AHI reports and feeling like I've gotten a great night's sleep. That's a draw back from finally going on therapy after more than 20 years of being stubborn, now that I know what a great night's sleep is, I'm addicted.
