Mirage Liberty f/f mask, any side sleepers using it?

Post by Harleycruzer » Tue Feb 19, 2013 6:57 am

Would like to get some feedback on the Mirage Liberty full face mask and how it affects side sleepers such as myself, I started my CPAP therapy with the Swift LT nasal pillow mask, and now lately my wife has been waking me to tell me I'm blowing air through my mouth or my mask fell off which it actually hasn't, I've tried the Mirage Quattro f/f mask and did not like it, the nose/mouth breathing capability worked well for me, but I tired of leaks and re-adjusting, I was told by my DME that "some" clients who are side sleepers as well had issues with the Mirage Liberty mask and were not comfortable with it?, sure looks like it would work for me and not as big & bulky as the Quattro??

i have not used that mask but I do know what you mean about having trouble w/ the mask. I am using the Swift fx pillows and think it is not for me. not sure how to get a new one w/out sounding like a customer that knows all and really knows nothing. My dr. is more concerned w/ compliance than mask so i am a bit leary about approaching him.

Morning
I use the Respcare/Innomed Hybrid...almost the same as the Liberty, and I sleep on my side with my face partially smooshed into my pillow. No problems what so ever.

To the person that needs a new mask but can't ask their doctor.... just go to your supplier that gave you the mask and exchange it for something else. If you are new to this the manufacturers have a program that allow the suppliers to trade out masks for the first 30 days of use. And don't feel like you are being overbearing... this is YOUR health we are talking about, not the doctors or the suppliers. You need to take charge of your therapy and do what needs to be done for YOU. I would suggest that you do some reading here on the forum and educate yourself on how to go about treating your therapy in a positive manner.
Cheers and good luck to you both.

Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

and yet more good advice, I'm somewhat of a newbie posting here but a long time lurker/reader and have found cpaptalk.com very informative, thank you !!

my DME does not carry the Respcare/Innomed Hybrid which I was looking to go with, it looks a little more sleeker and less obstructive for a side sleeper such as myself

The only issue I've had with the Liberty is that the nasal pillows sometimes need a little "encouragement" to stay flush against my nares. Some people use lanolin, but it seems to make the left pillow slip more than just the dry silicone.
When in doubt, open the case. Remember: If you can't open it, you don't own it!

Prescribed APAP range - 6-10 cm/H2O, titrated at 8.
Current range - 9.0-11.5 cm/H2O - still searching for the magic "zero night" but averaging 2.2 AHI

that's minor yet encouraging compared to what I was going through with the quattro... thx

I've used the Liberty for just over a year and am a side sleeper with a "contour" memory foam pillow. I just kind of bunch up the pillow so the major support or pressure point is just behind the mask and almost never have problems. Occasionally you have to skooch around to get things settled in but it's sure worth a shot. The only other mask I've tried was the Quattro FX but I couldn't tolerate the pressure at the top of my nose.

Just tried the liberty, didn't work for me . I am a side sleeper and I change sides all night long, tends be pushed off my nose and mouth . Too many leaks for me ! I went back to the amara ff. I want to try the mirage quattro soon . I am a mouth breather and I haven't tried to fix that yet. I have had a Rhinoplasty caused by a car crash when I was young . Don't know if that made things worse , don't have allergies, but I work hard and mouth breathe heavily . Sometimes causing me to breathe in a bug , like a sand flea and oh wow does that hurt!

Very good review of the liberty on you tube.

Well, it's been two weeks now using the Mirage Liberty mask https://www.cpap.com/productpage/2513 and so far so good, it took a couple of days to get adjusted to it and figure out how to set the nasal pillows, also purchased a CPAP pillow for added comfort and leak prevention , I'm going to say the Mirage Liberty mask is my 2nd best favorite mask, although I still have my 1st, the Swift XF and can use it anytime but as being somewhat both a nose & mouth breather the Mirage Liberty is a keeper and is what works best.

Update: the Mirage Liberty mask https://www.cpap.com/productpage/2513 is now my #1 favorite mask and the Swift XF has taken the 2nd best spot, the Mirage Liberty mask works great now that I have it adjusted properly and with being a 90% of the time side sleeper the CPAP pillow makes it even better, sure is nice having the mouth and nasal feature without all the bulky full face stuff.

Hi there,
I am curious what kind of pillow you purchased. I tried the Mirage Liberty a couple of nights and had multiple leaks. I am a very restless side sleeper and sometimes back now that I've started CPAP. I tightened straps in the supplier's office and found it to fit fine with no leaks. Went home, tried it for the night and finally took it off at 3:00 AM, switching back to my regular pillow mask. I am struggling with it a well but not as much leakage.

I just had my 2nd night using the Mirage Liberty FFM. So far, so good. Getting a few mouth leaks so far but I am a side sleeper so I can expect to have some. The Mirage Quattro was leaking badly into my eyes plus as you say it was bulky. At times it felt like a boulder sitting on my face! I'm currently using the cpap pillow and seem to be able to quash the mouth leaks a little easier. A major complaint I have about the ML is that the straps are not easy to work with. I feel like the straps are slipping off the back of my head. Also, when I try to affix the left bottom clip with my left hand (I'm right handed), I struggle. The clips are very tiny by comparison to the MQ. It's all in the learning curve. I'm looking forward to the 3rd night with the ML and 'eye leak free' sleeping!

Try using the tiniest bit of lanolin you can imagine. Just enough to put a very thin layer on the bottom of the not a just a bit into the nares.

You want to make the skin tacky, not slippery.

Also some people report that tying a loop of dental floss around the stems of the pillows can help adjust them to fit better.

a loop of dental floss around the stems?, what's that do? stiffen them a bit so they're no so flimsy?

I've been using the ML for almost a month now and the nasal pillows (especially the left one) is starting to pop out on occasion. I will be trying the Lansinoh to try and correct the problem. Also, I have noticed that the AHI is creeping up a little at a time. I now up past 2.0. The numbers were less than 1.0 while on the Mirage Quattro. Looking at Sleepy Head and not seeing big leak numbers at all. Perhaps a trade-off?
