New to CPAP and loosing the battle already
Hello, I went to see my doctor in relation to a snoring problem, who subsequently sent me for a sleep study, without telling me why.
I went for the study at the start of this week and was diagnosed with severe sleep apnia, I am 26 years old and quite healthy, the sleep lab stated that for someone in my category it was very rare. I was discharged from hospital a few nights ago with a new ResMed S9 elite with dehumidifier and the heated hose.
The first night after approximately 10 mins of me breathing in the pipe makes a popping noise with the water, which I persevered with for about 4 hours before turning the cpap off. Tonight as I am lay in bed the exact same thing is happening.
Does anyone have any idea how to stop this, I am not sure if I should turn the climate control up or down to eliminate the problem, I need help as this is drivivng me insane already all I want is a good nights sleep.
Thanks very much in advance
Steve

No idea as to the humidifier problem, but troubleshoot to see if everything is connected properly. Turn humidifier/climateline settings to low and you can adjust from there.
Just be lucky that your sleep disorder was caught early on. Having severe sleep apnea is no joke.

I'm guessing, but it sounds like water in the hose. Be sure that you have your machine lower than the top of your mattress so any water accumulating in the hose runs back down to the humidifier. When you get the noise ,raise the hose to see if water runs out.

Turn the humidifier off for a night and see if that is the problem. Then put the humidifier lower than your head, then insulate your hose, then modify your heat.

I don't see how anyone could get enough rainout (condensation) in 10 minutes to get that kind of problem.
My "guess" is that the reservoir has been over filled.
Check the humidifier reservoir to see if it has been filled passed the full level.

This would be my first suspect also.DreamStalker wrote:My "guess" is that the reservoir has been over filled.
To OP....when the reservoir is too full the air blowing over the water pushes water into the hose. Makes an awful noise and it can and will blow the water up the hose clear up to your face. I have done it. PITA because not only do you have to remove the reservoir and pour off some of the water...you also have to take the hose off and drain the water out of it and even out of the mask if it made it up that far and then you have to dry everything because even a few drops of water will make an awful racket.
When I did it the noise woke my husband and he was wondering if I "broke" something.

Re: New to CPAP and loosing the battle already
Thanks very much for the quick replies, I managed 6.8 hours sleep with the mask on last night.
The problem is definitely water in the hose, as when I took the hose off the face mask water sprayed out.
The machine is raised above my head, and the reservoir was filled right to the maximum line, neither of these I will not do in the future.
I am slowly getting used to the machine, thank you very much.

You can use a regular or climateline hose for your machine. The climateline hose is a heated hose and will prevent the water from condensing as the water vapors travel thru the hose and into your mask. Try and get one. You can also try to sleep without the humidifier. If you don't need it, it can eliminate a lot of hassle. Glad to see you slept so well! You may feel bad that you have to have this therapy at such a young age, but sleep apnea will kill you by taking years off your life. You are blessed that you caught it early enough to eliminate long term damage to occur.

Re: New to CPAP and loosing the battle already
Thanks for the reply. I do have the climateline hose which I have been using, I have to use the humidifier as I cannot breath through my nose at all and am a mouth breather, problem being I sleep with my mouth open. there was still some water getting in the hose, I have been to purchase a thermometer today so I can monitor my room temperature, I think I had the heat in the hose too low. (room temperature 23 degrees, Hose: 19 Degrees), and also the machine was above my head, so I have moved onto the floor until I can get a suitable solution for it to sit on a bedside table.Sheriff Buford wrote:You can use a regular or climateline hose for your machine. Steve,
If you don't have a table to rest the machine on, try this platform made to hold a cpap machine on the side of your bed. The board is placed between the box spring and mattress.

Or you can use a milk crate, box or some phone books. Lower the machine and up the temperature on the humidifier. It's not unusual to have to "tinker" with the humidifier, mask adjustment, pressure, etc.., throughout your whole journey... I still "tinker".

Re: New to CPAP and loosing the battle already
Have the same equipment, and had a popping sound one night & just turned the machine off and back on. It stopped the noise, also I never fill my tank above the line on the refill hole on the tank. Use distilled water only and not had any problem with any rain-out( water in the tube). I am a side and stomach sleeper with the CPAP machine on a bedside night stand, which is the same height as the bed. Have the hose up and over the headboard of the bed with no problem changing positions during the night. Use a CPAP pillow which has helped. Originally the machine was set at a temperature of 70 degrees, but that was too warm for me & I adjusted it down to 60 degrees which is much better.

Re: New to CPAP and loosing the battle already
I traveled with mine, and the bed was too high to put the machine directly on the floor. I improvised and took the small trash can in the hotel room, turned it upside down, and set it next to the bed for my machine. Worked pretty well.stevetaylor1234 wrote:Yes this is Celsiussquid13 wrote:I assume that is Celsius.stevetaylor1234 wrote:(room temperature 23 degrees, Hose: 19 Degrees),
