How do you deal with a head cold
How do you deal with a head cold
I'm congested and I'm coughing. How can I use my machine? I'm new to CPAP. I have a Resmed S9 Escape, H5i humidifier and an Opus 360 mask. I'm worried about being Medicare compliant and right now I can't stand the idea of using my machine. I'm having trouble getting used to it as it is. Any advise would be appreciated.

If the congestion is nasal; consider a NetiPot. It will help to relieve nasal inflamation and mucus. Make sure you folow the instructions; esp. the one about not using unboiled tap water.

I have a routine that works very well for me. My husband read it some years ago in this forum and taught it to me. Gramps and I both use it.whoslucky wrote:I'm congested and I'm coughing. - 12-hour generic Sudafed pill every morning to keep the nasal passages open
- 12-hour generic Afrin nasal spray every night to keep the passages open at night (Note: Do not use this more than four nights because more usage can result in rebound congestion when you discontinue Afrin.)
- If sneezing, take 24-hour generic Zyrtec pill - one very 24 hrs.
My husband and I would like to thank whoever posted this because it is a big help. Sorry, but I don't have a link.
We also use zinc lozenges and they seem to help a lot. Follow package instructions and don't overdose.

If I have such a case, which I seldom do:whoslucky wrote:I'm congested and I'm coughing. How can I use my machine? I'm new to CPAP. I have a Resmed S9 Escape, H5i humidifier and an Opus 360 mask. I take Claritin before going to sleep and, spray or rinse my nose with:

or

If I can't fall asleep within 30 min I take 5 mg of Zolpidem and if that does not work in 30 min I take another such dose which put me to sleep in 15 min.
Larger dose of Zolpidem is habit forming.

Is there a home remedy thread on here? If not, someone should make one.ChicagoGranny wrote:

I have a full face mask that I used when I had a cold. It allowed me to open my mouth if necessary (blockage) and I was able to keep my mask on all night. The first night was hell though: I kept sneezing and had to remove the mask several times to blow my nose. I went back to my nasal mask a few nights later when I was able to breathe better through my nose.

It sounds like a fantastic idea to use one of my dozen or so old full face masks, that I keep in a drawer, if I come down with a head cold.
Since some of the sufferers are newbies it might be prudent to mention that there is a difference between allergic rhinitis and a vasomotor rhinitis (Google).

Re: How do you deal with a head cold
I'm pretty much a student of the "Tough It Out School". It's not easy, but I can't tolerate OTC meds (prostate issues) and can't even knock myself out with tranqs or opiate based meds (other medical concerns). A shot of brandy helps a little, but it doesn't last long and yields more apneas than I like to see. Sooooo. good luck figuring it out... if you discover a great solution, come back and let us know

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Re: How do you deal with a head cold
I take a nighttime decongestant and put a cotton ball dipped in Vicks near the air intake of the machine - crank up the humidity and use a full face mask.
