Any tips for sleeping with a runny nose?

Post by YogaKitty » Sun Nov 11, 2012 9:39 pm

Two months into therapy I now have my first cold or possibly flu. The last couple of nights i have been coughing and now my nose is running like crazy. Any tips on sleeping with my mask like this?
I also have used a night guard for twelve years.

I'd take an anti-histimine but that's just me.

Took an antihistamine and some cough syrup. Cranked up the humidifier a little. Hoping for the best!

Antihistamine is the only thing that ever helped me. Good luck. And keep lots of tissues handy. If it gets too bad you may want to (have to) forgo the cpap for a night.

I would get the Afrin spray to use for the first few nights. Follow the directions... and only use for two or three nights.

Elevating your head might help. Using a daytime flu remedy. Keep your mask cleaned daily. Let nature runs its course, but start using hand sanitizer
religiously after all this.

Had a nasty cold recently...used Sudafed. Had about three bad nights, for a couple of them I managed 2 hours on CPAP before I had to give it up. For the other bad night I made it to 4 hours before I had to stop the CPAP.

Worth a try to take something that'll keep the congestion down, Sudafed, or whatever else works for you. The other good thing about keeping the congestion down, if you can, is that it lessens the chance of followup sinus infections, bronchitis, etc. At least, that's the way that it works for me. If I just let a cold run it's course without taking something like Sudafed to keep the congestion down, I end up getting sinus problems, and the cold is much more likely to move into my chest.

Sudafed- just be aware if you have any blood pressure issues you do not want to take it. I used to, worked better than anything else as a decongestant, but now I'm not supposed to due to it running my BP way up.
I have moderate success with a neti pot.

Alcohol gel- Ever since I started using it without fail after leaving any store, using the ATM, pumping gas- anyplace where I've touched something used by the public- I have cut my cold rate WAY back.
Just saw a tip yesterday that I hadn't considered- restaurant menus have a high contamination rating- "they" recommended washing your hands or using alcohol gel after touching one and before eating

When I had my first cold/flu while on CPAP, I used NyQuil at bed time and used my nasal spray (not afrin but a prescription spray like Nasonex).
I upped my temp/humidity and blew the hell out of my nose before donning my mask.
While I didn't get mt usual 7-9 hours of sleep, the 5 or so I got was enough and after I woke and cleared my nose out, I did manage another hour or two of sleep/ready/nap still on the hose.

Oh and I cleaned my mask daily while the symptoms were "full blown". It was really nice to have two masks, so one was being cleaned while the other being worn.

I switch to my full face mask and keep tissues handy for my nose; baby wipes for the mask.

The aromatheapy 'clear' works for me, in combination with decongestant sudafed.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I actually managed to sleep! I took codeine cough syrup, increased my humidity some, used mucin ex, Afrin, and an antihistamine. Oh, and "clear" aromatherapy. I still feel awful, but at least I got some sleep. I'm going to my doctor this afternoon.
