Wife complains of very high pitched whistle from my swift fx

Post by Pachyderm's Nose » Tue Oct 09, 2012 2:29 pm

Has anyone else noticed this? She says it's coming from the swivel where the hose connects to the pillow. I tried some Lansinoh on the joint but I guess it didn't help. Any other ideas? I have some hearing loss and tinnitus so I don't hear it but it's driving her crazy and insurance won't cover a different mask until February. I really like the swift fx but I suppose I'll need to get a different mask unless I can solve this.

I use the Opus 360, nasal pillows. Mine whistles from the swivel sometimes. When it does it is because of excessive moisture blocking the exhaling holes. I usually pop the swivel part out wipe it and I am good to go.

How long has this been going on?
Does it start immediately after you turn the machine on...or later in the night?

She says it starts right away and I disconnect my mask from the hose each morning and hang it in the closet so I know there is no water in the exhaust ports and she has complained about it right from the start.

I have read on here that sometimes the vent holes have not been reamed out properly in the manufacturing process. Try using a darning needle and poke through (carefully) each hole and see if that doesn't clear out any debris.
Cheers

Thanks Nan, I'll give it a try when I get home.

Ear plugs are a cheap option.

Been using the Swift FX for 2 years now and never had any whistle.
I would go along with cleaning out the vent holes really good to see if whistling stops.
I would also give the whole thing a good cleaning and careful inspection of the swivel connection to make sure something isn't torn or not fitting properly.

Same, Swift FX here to (well prior to my Sleepweaver Elan but I still occasionally switch over to it) and I have yet to hear any kind of whistle or noise other than a slight venting (wooshing) sound from the vents.

Are you sure you're not singing or whistling in your sleep? - as in mouth leeks couple with an odd snoring type function... I dunno what I'm trying to say, maybe somebody will?

I'm reluctant to suggest earplugs, I think that might be the last straw! I'm going to check the vent holes tonight and maybe switch from the slimline hose to a standard one to see if the velocity change makes a difference. I don't think it will, I think she's determined that I should be using the respironics opti-life mask her mother uses and nothing else will satisfy her. She does NOT want to see me spend the money to try it though. (sigh) Oh well, it'll work out eventually.

Yep I had that problem after a while with an old FX. I wore out the swivel area and it would suddenly whistle like a kettle. Bought a new FX and haven't had the problem again.

I think I see the hand writing on the wall here.

Is it possible to get a third party opinion as to the actual existence of the "whistle". Maybe take it in to the DME office and test things out??? Though if you are correct she might not believe them anyway.

Heres an iphone app from resmed that records. You could send them the whistle sound to add to their diagnosis

I'd remove the pillow, inspect the seal and then re seat the pillow if you haven't done so already
