Shrinking Nares?

Post by k.c.snorzalot » Sun Apr 23, 2006 5:23 pm

This may sound crazy, but I am vexed about a certain situation I am facing (or nosing as the case might be-lol).
I've been using my Headrest/Aura nasal interface now for about a month. When I switched to this from my Comfortgel mask; I fell in love with it at once. It fit great, didn't leak, and I loved that it didn't touch my face.
Now, about a month later, I am having a hard time getting the pillows to fit in my nose right, and I am getting leaks like crazy. My nose is starting to get sores as well as my upper lip is getting "windburn" during the night.
My beloved mask is quickly becoming my enemy. I've been trying different lubes (Simply Saline and Ayer Gel) to combat the dryness, but the nasal pillows will sometimes even pop out of my nose during the night. Is it possible that my honker is shrinking? Bad for the Aura, but maybe good for me as I've always had a rather large nose.

Hi k.c.snorzalot,

You must be a little frustrated after spending the big bucks for the perfect mask and then end up with sores on your nose and windburn on your lip.

I didn't want to be the bearer of bad news but felt you should be aware of these kind of repercussions asap as it relates to Apniacs. Do understand that it's not just you, many hoseheads experience the symptoms you describe as well as others even more obtrusive. I don't want to get into specific details of these conditions at this early stage of your treatment but I can assure you they can really be ugly and most disconcerting. Having grown up on a ranch in north east Texas raising horses and elephants my family and I nose the trouble you have seen.

The good news for you, based on the description you gave of your affliction, all is not lost. In fact there may be a logical explanation and simple solutions. First of all your honker is not shrinking! In fact just the opposite is more likely to be true - it's actually getting bigger. Especially if it was a little oversized to begin with.

What with age, especially coupled with constant mask prodding, the ole honker is just getting limp and lazy. Starts to simply hang down a lot more than it used to - if you haven't already noticed, this also affects other parts of your anatomy. Tends to affect both genders, so you cannot escape. Just go with the flow as best you can!

Regarding the windburn on you lip. Are you absolutely sure it is windburn? A lot of new xPAP users jump to this same conclusion after about one month of initial xPAP use. For some it is true windburn, but for others it is simply another natural phenomena we all experience as we get older. In any case the solution is simple and resolves either affliction.

We actually run into this a lot on the ranch, not so much with the equine group but more with the older mastodon population. It has to do with the number and coarseness of the follicles within and growing out of the nostril area. Seems if the air can't get through the nares, you end up with windburn on the lip. Otherwise the follicles, particularly the heavy duty coarser variety, irritate the lip area causing what looks like windburn but is in fact, just a normal rash. We use pliers or hedge clippers and the problem is solved. You should check into this as it could help your condition.

Hope this helps!

Unclebob......So good to read your post......been a while.......! Like me, you seem to spend a lot of time with TIC (Tongue In Cheek)......Maybe not........I find my TIC alot of times results in FIM (Foot In Mouth). Great to be able to laugh.....But don't go scaring k.c. with your home=grown nightmares..........!

O.k., so I had the same problem last night. In the middle of the night I got up and came in to work on the computer since I was so frustrated.
I logged in here, only to read unclebob's reply to my post.
So, now, not only do I have a big nose, but I'm being compared to an elephant? Great. And, how do you know the rest of my body is getting limp with age?
In spite of the comments, I took your advice and got out a pair of shrub pruners and went to work on my follicals. I guess I will have to get yet another mask because now I have no lip or nose left to speak of.
I also have a large bag of bologna that I have sitting here with me which I am feeding into the computer as I type. Just an attempt to get back at unclebob-lol. The shrub pruners could work well for that "tongue-in-cheek" problem that you seem to have. Just kidding; no one should take this part of the post seriously. I have not mutilated myself of my mask in any way.

I don't understand this phenomena either but it sure does exist. My friendly, dependable Swift is rebelling now. If it were a person I'm sure I would be yelling at it and wishing I could slap it! I think it may need a timeout but when I experiment with the Headrest or CL2 the Swift has always been there to bail me out. Not so anymore. I may try Amigo's solution to the "rim" leaks even at the risk of lipoid peenumoaneeah.

Seriously though - the rubber bands really do work. For all it's beauty as an interface the Headrest seems to be a little fickle and prone to wandering all over the nose without a little assistance but those rubber bands keep it firmly in its place.

All this has me wondering about an Activa. Ah, the joys of mask fantasies and addiction!
