I took all sorts of tests, EPR on, off, cpap mode, apap mode, different pressures, different masks, different hoses, no ramp, fast ramp, with humidifier, without humidifier, etc. etc.
I took my Kodak Playsport video camera and recorded the first two S9 machines. I posted it to YouTube and sent a link to RESMED and I actually got a call from them tonight. He asked me to make my pressure range smaller, hum, sound like a complete shot it the dark. I will try that and get back to him on Monday.
Here is the link (earphones helps) so you can hear for yourself the "cooooing".

I played this for my local DME and they said they do hear it but the majority of their costumers are old and can't hear well so most customers don't hear it. Nice. I'm surprised that they keep letting me try a new one, I'm sure that will stop soon.
Making the pressure range smaller will most likely have no effect, as the machine is still operating only at one pressure at any given moment. Turning off EPR would make a difference in how the machine works, but I see that you have tried that.
The 100% solution for those that don't like the hooting is to get a Devilbiss Intellipap Autoadjust, it does the excact same things as the S9, makes less noice (even if the specs says otherwise), doesn't hoot, has a better designed humidifier and feels more sollidly buildt to me. What you loose is the color screen.

I am a new S9 Auto user. I don't know my settings, but will learn them sometime. Both my wife and I have noticed the very audible bird noise on exhale. I tried the machine without the humidifier this morning to to try to localize the source. It still did it it without the humidifier. My machine is on a bedside table on top of a large paper back book.

An S9 Autoset that hoots? Wow! I've never heard of such a thing.

My S9 Autoset does not make bird sounds. I do hear a sort of slight bubbly hissing sound no and then, but nothing that bothers me.
Re: How many Resmed S9's DON'T have the bird sound ?
No hooting noticed here, but I haven't gone looking for it. Although I'm afraid if I listen for it, I'll start noticing it and it will bother me.
DeVilbiss charges $100 extra for the data module, and even then, it doesn't collect airflow waveform data, which is very important information.Burkebang wrote:The 100% solution for those that don't like the hooting is to get a Devilbiss Intellipap Autoadjust, it does the excact same things as the S9, makes less noice (even if the specs says otherwise), doesn't hoot, has a better designed humidifier and feels more sollidly buildt to me. Re: How many Resmed S9's DON'T have the bird sound ?
When I first got my machine I would notice the coo on exhales. Looking back, I was nervous as all get out getting used to the machine and about the first 1/2 hour each night I would hear it. As the next few weeks went by and I focused more on relaxed breathing when masking up, I found that the sound went away.
I test it now and then, taking deep breaths and exhaling harder than normal - bingo! There's the sound again. When I take time breathing out slowly, there is no sound at all. I chalked the sound up to hard pressure exhales and the possibility of the motor trying to catch up with them. I sleep with a box fan set on airplane engine mode (high) and still heard it my first month into therapy. The more I relaxed and concentrated on breathing slowly in and out, the sound went away.
YOU (as in general public you) may have a different experience, but it's worth a try to see if this cures your coo if the sound bothers you.

Re: How many Resmed S9's DON'T have the bird sound ?
Three nights in, I've been looking for and found it. It does appear to be a function of the volume/rate of air being exhaled. Less pronounced on shallow, slow exhales. Maybe some of us breathe harder?

Re: How many Resmed S9's DON'T have the bird sound ?
Very likely a combination of breathing harder and mask that is used along with the fact that some people are just super sensitive to various sounds. I am unsure if pressure used also plays into things but it might.BasementDwellingGeek wrote:Three nights in, I've been looking for and found it. I can hear "something" if I force myself to exhale harder. I can't say it sounds like a bird but I can very faintly hear something.
I use the Swift FX mask. When I was trying the Aloha...I had to force an even harder exhale to hear whatever sound I was hearing. So something is there...and how loud it is perceived or how annoying it might be will likely be another one of those YMMV stickers. If someone just can't get used to it and the sound is so annoying (they they hear) then perhaps a different brand of machine is needed. Normally our bodies do adjust to sleeping with various noises at whatever sound level (sleeping near the subway line or railroad tracks is a good example) but some people may not be able to adjust...they likely need a different machine.

No bird sound here, did have a slight ssss sound, but breathing too hard and fast out was causing it, I attribute that fast hard breathing to my being anxious about a new machine. Relaxed and no more sssssssssss sound.

Re: How many Resmed S9's DON'T have the bird sound ?
I may be not hearing anything due to the fact I usually sleep on my good ear.
I am surprised how quiet a cloth mask is. Even leaking, it barely makes a sound.
Still can't tell if it's on without feeling for the exhaust flow.

Re: How many Resmed S9's DON'T have the bird sound ?
Yes, I hear a sort of low rushing sound sometimes when I have the hose from the machine too close to my face and ear. Doesn't sound like a bird. It is just me breathing, magnified by the hose, both inhale and exhale. To make the noise go away, just turn over to the other side. It doesn't bother me, I still can sleep like the dead. When I am faced away from the machine, can't hear anything and hubby panics when he doesn't hear me breathing magnified by the tube, and he often puts hand of my chest lightly, to see if I am still breathing. Machine itself is VERY quiet. I have S9 auto and my pressure is set at 6 -10 and I think my EPR is 3, but not sure. Checking my data using Res-Scan my pressure seems to be around 8 for first 10-20 minutes, then rises to 10 for rest of night. I think I probably need to bump pressure up a little.

I heard the bird sound last night. For a while after I read this post a couple of months ago, I thought that maybe you guys were hearing stuff or imagining noises, or even more insidious, leading newbies like me along!
Last night, I woke up at 2am and as I lay there, going to my happy place to go back to sleep. In the quiet of the night, i heard it. a tiny chirp at the end of my exhale.
I started playing around, when I took an easy shallow breath, no chirp. A large semi forceful breath, no chirp. But when I breathed sort of normal, like, there it was, "chirp"! Oh joy, playing with that cost me a couple of hours of my beauty sleep and for those that saw my picture, I need all the sleep I can get!
Hey ResMed, anyone looking into this?

I told my DME I wanted the Resmed Autoset or Elite. She was pushing Respironics some to me but said she would order what ever I want. Do I really want a Resmed that "coos"?

Re: How many Resmed S9's DON'T have the bird sound ?
Don't let a little sound dissuade you. I really think those who hear it have very sensitive hearing, an extremely quiet bedroom, a particular style of breathing, or some combination of those. I believe most of us, including myself, have never heard it and in fact were quite skeptical of those who reported it first.YogaKitty wrote:I told my DME I wanted the Resmed Autoset or Elite.
