Recommendations for a Nasal mask??
Hello forum!
I am eligible to get a new mask through my insurance. I have been using a Respironics nasal mask so far (On my Resmed S9 Elite machine). I was wondering if I should try something nice and new. Can you please suggest some.
Thank you!!

Masks are the biggest problem with CPAP compliance. If you have a mask that you are comfortable with, you probably should stick with itkarthikvprasad wrote:Hello forum!

Re: Recommendations for a Nasal mask??
You may want to look into the Mask Trial Program at http://www.cpaplibrary.com - you can try out a mask of your choice for a week, and you only pay $14 (to cover the cost of shipping both ways). I've used the program a few times and have tried out masks I was interested in.
The one I liked the best was the Resmed Mirage FX nasal mask. However, mask fit is a very personal thing; what works great for me might not be a good fit for you.

Re: Recommendations for a Nasal mask??
What ever your choice, I'd say: if you have trouble achieving a seal, try gobs of Vaseline applied around the seal line.
Or, perhaps, try using Scuba mask silicone.
But without seeing you or measuring your face in someway, nope, I can only tell you what mask I use, and what works for me me me.
And even that may not hold true as I continue to shed weight.
Cause life is in motion, and a mask . . . is not.

1. Your face is unique.
2. Short of a custom built mask, or one that can be softened and "mushed" into shape (there is such a mask, I forget which of the two R&R sisters make it), the mask may—or may not—"seal" against your face when a "comfortable" pressure is set by adjusting the masks straps.
3. Even a bespoke solution (BS) i.e., a custom made mask will have a challenge, how to change its shape to fit your ever-changing face as you go from lying on your right side, to lying on your back, to lying on your left side.
Of course, your facial expressions will be plastic when you sleep, grimaces, laughs, jaw drops, etc.
4. I believe there are 3 major categories of masks, (Full Face, nasal, and nasal pillows) I believe that the bigger the mask type, the bigger a challenge it faces to hold that seal against the shifting topography that is your face when you sleep at night.
I believe that there is a reason why many CPAP patients drop their therapy, sometime with disastrous short or long term consequences.

The RRT was assigned to me, and me alone, for the entire night, a first for me.
He attended to my every need, no matter how small, with great ceremony, like he was an RRT geisha girl, a first for me.
But he couldn't figure out how to make a mask seal against my face, yet again, a first for me.

Re: Recommendations for a Nasal mask??
ResMed Mirage FX nasal is first mask that has really worked for me, after trying ffm, hybrids, pillows...
Very light with minimal profile. I still need chin strap (ruby Puresom) and tape (2080 el) but this combo hits the sweet spot for me.
But, we are all so different. What works for one...
Cpaplibrary is a great resource for trials.

Re: Recommendations for a Nasal mask??
I was fitted for a mask at the DME that worked \great for me, the Mirage micro, I decided to try a nasal pillow mask (don't remember which one) but as gitting lots of leaks and was uncomfortable. So in the end I went back to the mask I was using because it was working good for me.

Re: Recommendations for a Nasal mask??
That's an astonishingly bad suggestion. Vaseline is petroleum based. Lots of types of plastic or rubber will be damaged by Vaseline/petroleum jelly.rocklin wrote:What ever your choice, I'd say: if you have trouble achieving a seal, try gobs of Vaseline applied around the seal line.

Re: Recommendations for a Nasal mask??
If you like the Respironics nasal mask you might want to try the Resmed Mirage Softgel. I tried both and liked the Softgel better.
Re: Recommendations for a Nasal mask??
Your suggestion to use Vaseline might damage the OP's mask. Most of us would consider that to be a bad thing.rocklin wrote:And thus?archangle wrote:Lots of types of plastic or rubber will be damaged by Vaseline/petroleum jelly.

Re: Recommendations for a Nasal mask??
I have the Mirage FX and I like it a lot (when my sinuses are clear). It is really comfortable and I haven't had any leak issues.

Re: Recommendations for a Nasal mask??
I've used the VPAP III for a few years now and had fairly good results with the Resmed Mirage SoftGel mask. Its the most comfortable that i've used thus far. Most masks are made of silicone, so using vaseline will break down or damage the mask itself.
