New user with S9 question
I just got my S9 CPAP a little less than 2 weeks ago (not sure what subtype it is) and I did have an issue with it turning the pressure down. I took it in the have the pressure measure and it was way down. Turned out the Flex was turned on, so he turned it off. I also don't use the ramp because I don't find it necessary.
Today I woke up again feeling like the pressure was less. I have a good mask fit (Mirage Quattro full face with headgear) so I know its not leaking. Plus the onscreen report didn't show any leaks. I just turned on the AHI reporting too, but I don't remember what the number was and it doesn't show last night's numbers now.
My doctor and the DME said you do get used to the pressure, so is that all I'm feeling now? Do you wake up in the morning feeling like the pressure is lower even though it isn't, or do I still have a problem with the machine?

Re: New user with S9 question
I agree with your provider.......you do get used to the pressure, and don't notice it, especially in the am when you've been wearing it all night. You can trust the numbers.
The numbers roll into the average after noon each day..........so the numbers you viewed in the morning, are not available in the afternoon or evening. Most machines gather data noon to noon.

I don't feel the pressure at all (11). You get used to it rather quickly if you use it regularly. You can feel the force of the exhaust and...you can unhook the mask and feel the pressure coming directly from the hose,

Re: New user with S9 question
Thank you so much! I do definitely feel and hear the air flow when I take the mask off. And its also good to know about the times the data is collected.
My computer has an S-card reader (several sizes), but I'm afraid to pop it in there for fear I'll wreck the card. Can I do that as long as I have the software to interpret the data on the card?
Thanks again,
Joy

Absolutely plug the card in and download the data when you have time.........I do it all of the time. Having the standardized card is one of the pro's of the S9 series......

You will need Resmed software which is called Rescan. You can find it and download it here. Look for posts by "uncle bob". The link is under his name. Good luck!

It is almost downloaded (93%) right now, so I'm on my way. I'm a nerd who can't wait to see my data!

Re: New user with S9 question
I just took possession of my S9 elite and mirage mask yesterday. I had a really good night sleep for the first time in memory. My wife said she checked me 2x during the night to see if I was still breathing because I was so quite. She can get rid of the earplugs. Where can I find a link to download the latest rescan software to start managing my data?

Re: New user with S9 question
With the EPR Feature when the provider is measuring the pressure it thinks it is in the breathing out cycle so it lowers the pressure. So you can turn the feature back on because when you actually use it, it will be at the right pressure. That is a common issue that most DME's don't even know about.
Also you can check the AHI for different time periods right on the machine. You have to go into the advanced information screen. Hold down the two silver buttons together.
Here is a video that will help with that.

I'm lost. Can you clarify what you mean here?sleepnationtv wrote:With the EPR Feature when the provider is measuring the pressure it thinks it is in the breathing out cycle so it lowers the pressure. For example: Suppose you've got an S9 AutoSet that is running in straight CPAP mode with the pressure set at 9cm and EPR set to 3.
Are you saying the pressure is 9cm on the EXHALE and then it goes up to 12cm when you INHALE?
Or are you saying the pressure is 9cm on the INHALE and then it goes down to 6cm when you Exhale?
And out of curiosity, where does one find this information documented?
Thanks

Re: New user with S9 question
Kessa, next to the power button on your S9, it should say "escape, escape auto, elite, or AutoSet."
I use a pressure of around 12. When I've had my mask on for for a while, I have to open my mouth and let some air escape or lift up the edge of my mask sometimes to convince myself the machine is on because I can't feel the pressure any more. You can also put your hand in the air stream from your mask exhaust and get used to how that feels when the pressure is right.

This, the prescription pressure will be maintained during the inhale and pressure decreases to allow an easier exhale.robysue wrote:Or are you saying the pressure is 9cm on the INHALE and then it goes down to 6cm when you Exhale?
It's not, at least not for ResMed, even in the clinical manual. But if you look up C-Flex for Respironics, it's a little better documented and it's the same thing.robysue wrote:And out of curiosity, where does one find this information documented?

This is really my own opinion/experience but you shouldn't need this feature unless your pressure is at least 10. I'm sure people will disagree because it really depends on the user and how easily they can exhale against the machine but, that's my thought.

Re: New user with S9 question
Alshain, this is, of course, exactly what I thought and what my RT said when she set the S9 up back last Septemeber. But sleepnationtv's English seems to imply otherwise:Alshain wrote:This, the prescription pressure will be maintained during the inhale and pressure decreases to allow an easier exhale.probysue wrote:Or are you saying the pressure is 9cm on the INHALE and then it goes down to 6cm when you Exhale?
Re-read that part that I emphasized: Is sleepnationtv saying that the (set) pressure is measured on the breathing OUT (EXHALE) cycle when you use EPR? Because if that's what he is saying, then his statement definitely runs counter to what DME's and RT's (and even posters here) commonly tell S9 users about how EPR works. Because most DMEs and most RT's do think EPR lowers the pressure from the set pressure on exhale (hence exhale relief) and then raises the pressure back up to the set pressure on inhale. Which is why there is some concern by some DMEs and RTs (and even a few users here) that turning on EPR might adversely affect the quality of treatment. And that raises the question: What does sleep nationtv mean by that statement : That is a common issue that most DME's don't even know about.sleepnationtv wrote:With the EPR Feature when the provider is measuring the pressure it thinks it is in the breathing out cycle so it lowers the pressure. And if he's not meaning to say the set pressure is measured on EXHALE when using EPR (which is what it sounds to me like he's saying), then I'd like him to clean up his statement so it's no longer ambiguous.
