LOL.

I'm 45 and I know how you feel!

I just read there are a lot more elderly people being treated with CPAP all the time.

And I read that doing your therapy will make it a LOT easier on your heart and greatly increase your chances of still being alive,

FWIW, my uncle was diganosed and began treatment a couple of years ago. He's 87.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Dx 11/07: AHI 107, central apnea, Cheyne Stokes respiration, moderate-severe O2 desats. (Simple OSA would be too easy. ;))

PR S1 ASV 950, DreamWear mask, F&P 150 humidifier, O2 @ 2L.

Now turning 60 yrs old, I wonder if I can keep doing this into my 70's and 80's? Will I get too
forgetful with old timer's disease to remember to put on my mask? Anyone in their 80's and still
doing xpap therapy?

My Mom is 89 and still using her APAP every night. I intend to use mine for the next 30 years to reach that age.

Assuming we have no other health problems, I think we should have normal life expectancies as long as we keep up with our therapy.

I think about how I felt pre-CPAP when I often wondered "How quickly will I go?".

I was convinced there was no way I would last very long with the way I felt every day.
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

I'm 79 and was diagnosed last May. Struggling to find the right settings and getting more energy through CPAP. I'm feeling, sometimes, if it's worth it to do CPAP. Are we supposed to put a mask on everytime we nap or doze off? If we don't, could that one time possibly be the time we could have a stroke or die? If so, our chances aren't too good, as we doze off without having the chance to put on a mask, many times.

Good points. I am still convinced my death was imminent had I not been diagnosed and started treatment.

For me personally, and maybe for many other members here, diagnosis of sleep apnea and learning to treat it with CPAP brought other things into the game. The big ones were diet, exercise, and sleep hygiene. I became more educated and developed much better habits. Only time will tell if these habits lead to a longer life for me, but they have improved the quality of my current life.

I know it's easy to doze when we get older, but the more you use the machine, the less you'll need to - won't want to doze as much, plus sleeping without it will set back the gains you make overnight....some people have two machines, one in the bedroom, the other by the sofa, just for those times, but I know it's hard to remember!

Another thing - we may all well not be using Cpap within a few years as there could easily be new ways to address OSA that are more advanced...I'm hoping for those.

I would much rather have thoughts of using XPAP well into old age than the alternative.... of not making it into old age.

Cheers,
xena

Don't be mad, Polly. Be GLAD you've been diagnosed and have started treatment earlier than many of us here. You have the opportunity to stop damaging your brain and body now, so you can prevent many of the associated ills of untreated apnea.
