Imposter

Post by napstress » Wed Jun 01, 2011 6:04 pm

Yesterday, when I had asked my sleep dr whether or not I had apnea, given that the data on my diagnostic report showed an AHI of 0.2, she told me flatly, "You do not have apnea." She explained that she had made her diagnosis based on the RDI (of 45.4) and EEG and that I have a narrow nose that probably contributes to respiratory disturbances resulting in unrefreshing sleep and afternoon drowsiness.

She believes I should continue with CPAP therapy to address my high RDI.

May I still participate on this forum?

I feel exhausted all the time, cannot keep my eyes open in the afternoon, have 24 teeth and a long, narrow nose, and have an average AHI of 5.2 withCPAP therapy. Do I still qualify for membership?
Epworth Sleepiness Scale: 14
Diagnostic study: overall AHI: 0.2 events/hour; overall RDI: 45 events/hour
Titration study: AHI: 6.1; RDI: 27; CPAP pressures: 5-8cm

Not-tired behind my eyes and with a clear, cool head!

Since your doc recommends continuing on CPAP, and this is cpaptalk, looks like you're in exactly the right place!

I vote yes! Even if you eventually don't need a machine. True this is a forum XPAP users, but it is also a place of inspiration - and you're inspiring!

All things for a reason.
We are all here for a reason/s.

There is much to learn from each other.

you may not have apneas. but doesn't mean you don't have a sleep disorder. You could have Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). no apnea events but respiratory effort related arousals (RERAs).

seems like it is an underdiagnosed syndrome. it is what I have too. For which CPAP is indicated! again, this is CPAPtalk

I have UARS, too, and the RDI is the number you have to pay attention to more than the AHI. With an RDI of 45.4 you HAVE to stay here!

So did the doc make any adjustments to your therapy given that you are still exhausted?

That's what I like about this forum, I'm always learning something new. So, RDI . . . I looked back on my reports and RDI doesn't exist. I do not have the entire report, but the boiled down for the public type of report - a summary. Hummm, I knew I should have gotten the real report.

The little research I did shows a max of 15 = normal. Your number at 45.4 is way above that. I'm hoping to learn more about RDI through this thread.

As a person that was in a similar situation a year ago, I think it's important that I pipe in here --

of course you can and should -- STAY....

My situation is way outside the normal and when I asked if I could stay, people here not only said Yes, but encouraged me to stay, keep learning and keep posting.

This is like one big family here. Even if, down the road, someone doesn't need xpap any longer, they still are member of this family.

Well, according to the official User Agreement at the bottom of the page, the requirements that must be met to post here are . . . uh . . . let me see . . . wait a minute . . . I know it's gotta be in there somewhere . . . ummm . . . Oh, there it is! You have to be over 18. (I assume that means physically, since mentally and emotionally I am about 14 1/2, give or take.) Other than that, the qualifications are . . . uh . . . well . . . I guess that's about it, really, other than a bunch of lawyer-talk.

There are a number of treasured posters to this site who have NO sleep-disordered breathing or significant sleep problems whatsoever. They are just as helpful, and therefore just as welcome, as anyone else.

Post away. (And by that I mean, post HERE.)

Man. I really shouldn't have read that agreement. Lawyer-talk gives me the heebie-jeebies.

For example, how is this for a convoluted sentence/thought?:
. . . "While using CPAPtalk.com, you will not: . . . use CPAPtalk.com, if you are below the age of 18 . . ."
How can I not use it while using it?

Only the lawyers know.

Hey Jeff, and Everybody,

and what about this -
you will not - gather, compile, or in any way collect information about users, including email addresses, without first obtaining such user's express consent;
which means that anyone who wants to be of assistance to anyone after reading their post (gathering information), must get specific permission from the poster wanting help, before you are allowed to help them.

So to avoid a problem for anyone who wants to reply to anything I post I hereby give you all permission to gather whatever you want from anything I say. Just don't blame me if it the gathering becomes cumbersome, Gathering Guides can be obtained at http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/26373

We now need all 56,403 users (minus one) to make a similar statement so we can get on with the business of helping each other

Go for it guys and gals

Mars

PS - Hey Napstress - stick around - we all need all the help we can get
for an an easier, cheaper and travel-easy sleep apnea treatment :D
