New CPAP time - what to buy?

Post by Tn-Ken » Sat Jan 08, 2011 6:55 pm

I'm in the process of deciding what to buy for a new CPAP. Mine is from 2006 and has many thousands of hours on it and I'm thinking of "trading up".

Of course, there are a myriad of new machines and technologies and I'll admit to being a bit overwhelmed. It seems that every machine gets 4-5 stars from numbers of people. Of course, that could be because they're all good or it could be that people who get a machine simply know no better because that's all they've had (like me!).

So - I'm bowing to the expertise on this forum for guidance. What I'm considering (although I'm very open to others) are the Resed S9 Autoset (very pricey), IntelliPAP AutoAdjust with Humidifier (excellent price) or the one that I'm partial to (because I already have a REMstar) the PR System One REMstar Auto with A-flex.

I'm very interested in making sure that the machine I get has good software because I "self-adjust" the machine and like to monitor the results easily.

Comments?

Thanks in advance for the awesome advice.

Most folks would suggest a machine that MUST have these two features:

1. full data capability
2. apap [auto adjusting cpap]

If you go to cpap.com and search apap machines [https://www.cpap.com/cpap-machines/apap-machine.php], they will list a variety of units that have full data capability. I've got two ResMed S8 autoset II units, others would also recommend the newer S9 model. Respironics have comparable units.....

If you then visit secondwindcpap.com, they offer very competitive prices for 'new open box' units. Often they're 35%-45% less than other on-line sites.

Thanks for the quick reply. Since I posted that it occurs to me that I'd pay a bit more for a machine that has better reporting and software tools.

You might consider the new F&P ICON Auto. Our host site is selling it for $895. It appears to have excellent data available.

The one most similar to your M-series would be the Respironics System One Auto, If you like the features and operation of your current machine, that might be a good choice. Different brands/models have different quirks and "feel" to them, especially the Autos. (On the other hand, you might find one with quirks you like BETTER...)

I've had the luxury to get a S9 Autoset due to insurance. If I was buying out of pocket and cost was a big factor, I would look at the Icon Auto. People I've chatted with that have it, seem to like it. The footprint used by the machine is impressive and the features seem very complete. I admit I've never met an Icon and have no idea how it would compare to my S9, but it is impressive.

Here is a video of the S9 that may help you see if that is the machine for you.

If it were me, I'd choose the ResMed S9 Autoset.

I wouldn't bother buying the integrated heated humidifier for any new machine.
Nor would I buy an integrated heated hose.

I'd get these separate items, which can be used with any brand/type machine.

Fisher & Paykel HC 150 heated humidifier.

If I wanted a heated hose, I'd get the separate "Aussie heated hose" -- sleepzone.com.au heated cpap tube.
Or, a Repti heat cable.
