Pinout of an Encore software Communications Cable (serial)

Post by McSleepy » Sat Dec 18, 2010 2:19 pm

In parallel with my search for a way to read my data from my ResMed VPAP Auto 25 (viewtopic/t58305/Question-about-smart-c ... esMed.html), I would also like to do that from my old Respironics BiPAP Pro (also uses proprietary smart cards). The clinician's manual claims that the machine itself will work as a reader, i.e., you can connect the machine with a serial cable to the PC with the smart card in the machine and Encore Pro will read the patient data. The connector on the machine is a male DE-9 (data terminal equipment side), same as on the PC, but using a standard null-modem cable (one-to-one) doesn't seem to work. Is anyone using this kind of arrangement and/or knows anything about it? Thanks!

on the Respironics BiPAP's (Classic's and M-series) you need to get a MAKO DT3500 card reader.. (mine says it's a INFINEER)

I am not sure there was a BiPap Pro in the m series (there was a Plus and an APAP m series).

There was in the tank / legacy series and unless it was a Pro 2 I don't believe there is any enhanced data available.

I think the new BiPap lower level model is called a Pro.

What is the model number / name of the machine in question?

Thanks, cflame, but I'd like to explore the free options first, especially since the old machine is not likely to get much action, anyway. If I was certain this had to work, I'd try all possible pinouts (there are 36 possible, less if I can spot any wires that are not connected) using some sort of breakout box or something like that. Let;s hope someone knows anything about this.

The exact model is 1007216. It is a legacy (before Philips) model (ca 2003) BiPAP Pro with Bi-Flex and Digital Auto Trak. According to the clinician's manual, it records date, time, ramp usage, and duration of each use for 9 months. It might not be terribly useful but it's worth giving it a shot.

is there a smart card in the machine? and the machine isn't a Pro 2 - would say Pro 2 in Red

data was stored on the card - only data stored on the machine was probably compliance data - number of nights over 4 hours I expect?

The machine looks exactly like the one on the picture (it is not the Pro 2). The software version is from 2002. There wasn't a smart card originally but my DME sold me one now (I asked). It recognizes the card - shows the arrow and the memory usage on the display. The data might really be useless but I would take a little time if I could make it work.

what version EP did you get?

and what is your computer OS?

I run EP 1.4 on XP SP3 right now - but others have had problems with SP 3

I an running Encore Pro 2.2 but I also have older versions - do you think I should try those instead? The 2.2 does have the BiPAP Pro on its list of supported machines. The PC is WinXP SP3.

32 or 64 bit?

there is a BiPap Pro in the newest version machine - I would expect they mean that machine

So the software you are using isn't an old 1.x version?

I have a legacy / tank APAP and a legacy tank Pro 2 and have used 1.4 with them. I.3 will probably also work and I think all versions in the 1.x series after that should work. I really don't know if 2.x will work as I haven't ever tried it.

the members who might have the expertise you are seeking are probably goofproof and wulfman - they have used many versions of EP

however the only data you will obtain will be how many hours each night the machine is used and probably what pressure was used but no AHI information or leak information

I do appreciate your help. I have regular WinXP 32-bit. I installed the Encore 2.2 when I had the PR System One Auto BiPAP the previous 3 weeks, before my DME gave me the ResMed. I could install an old version (I think I have a 1.6) and try with it but I'd be shocked if they dropped support for machines that aren't even 10 years old. I've heard that 2.2 was designed on Windows XP as some Vista and Win 7 users have had to install it in compatibility mode, so I don't assume it could be a software operation problem. But you never know. Now that I realize how little data it can give me, I think it might not be worth it.

I tried to install EP 1.4 in XP compatibility mode on Windows 7 - I gave up (had problems with the card reader and gave up easily) and went back to the old XP machine. I had cleaned the hard drive and reinstalled OS and given it to my husband. SP3 was a clean install on that XP machine as some have had problems if it wasn't. I know there are many posts about SP3 being a problem with EP.

If you take off your EP 2.2 to put on an earlier version, make sure you get it all off and all versions of SQL off or something like that. People have reported problems with things like that but I am not the technical person to know all the ins and outs.
