The Chat Room Is Being Spammed By Numbers

I think it's time for me to take a break from this board. I'll miss my friends and miss the relationships I've established, but the fact that this has been allowed to continue to this degree - it just isn't worth it.

I'm sorry to hear you'll be leaving us for awhile, but not sure what you mean by "that this has been allowed to continue". Who is "allowing" it? It doesn't seem as if anything can be done about it, and the only part we have any control over is our reaction to it.

I came in to clean up and finish some Private Messages and saw this. While I respect what you've said about nothing being able to be done about this, I disagree. But I'm not one to force my opinion on anyone, especially if it's not a "right or wrong" kind of thing. I think a lot could have been done about this - you don't agree. And that's fine -- I'm cool with that.

I ignored this nonsense for quite a while, even when I kept getting PM after PM asking me if I was in chat because somebody WAS in chat under my name. I ignored the moderator in chat. But no matter what I did -- engage or ignore -- he kept impersonating me in chat.

I think those of you that think I'm overreacting or being too sensitive would feel very differently if somebody kept going into chat and pretending to be YOU. I think you would find it wrong, offensive and intolerable. But it's very easy to judge ME when it's not happening to YOU.

Be that as it may -- calist/moderator -- won. Plain and simple.

I'm disappointed that more people didn't stand up for me. And to those that did stand up for me, helped me and friended me so dearly, I thank you sincerely.

Some times we have to go away for a while when things are not beneficial for us emotional and I think that you are at that point. I think that it is good you recognize this and i agree you need to protect yourself from this kind of sh*t, you need all your energy and you need peace of mind.

This was happing yesterday as well all day ! but the strange thing is only when moderater left it stopped as soon as he/she came back in and went to busy it started all over again . so i know who is doing it but no way to cary a convoerstaion on while it is happing.

Signing up as a new member with some perversion of your handle can't really disrupt things, because it's so easy to spot.

The troller--I suspect the same one operating under multiple aliases--picks on you because you're vulnerable. That's always how abusers operate, and virtual abusers are no different.

Keep reminding yourself that in the real, objective world, he has no power over you, you're the one with all the friends, and he's the one wasting his life in ultimately useless activity.

What I said was that "it doesn't seem as if anything can be done about it", as in: I can't think of anything that can be done. People became irate and verbally eviscerated Calist, people generated ideas for how to determine the true identity of people in chat, Johnny kicked him off the board, and Carolyn described a system they are putting in place to prevent impersonating people in chat. I don't know computer systems well, but it seems nothing can stop him from using other IP addresses (or however it works), and until the new system Carolyn described is up and running, anyone can say they are anyone in chat. You feel that people "let it happen", and I am not sure what you mean by that. Again, I'm not saying there is nothing that could have been done, only that I can't think of what that is. What more could anyone have done to prevent it from happening?

The use of the username of Moderator should be reserved only for a Moderator and require a login : alos the use of the board should be tied to Members of the board other wise you end up with a possible security problem that could back fire on the board

I don't do the chat room thing, but I am disturbed by this as well. I tend to think that removing the chat altogether might be the smartest thing to do, assuming that there is more control over the posting list since many more of us are "monitoring."

I use the chat room for recreation, but it's main reason for existing is to help those having cpap problems. I would hate to see it shut down, as it is a valuable resource for those seeking help/advice/support. However, if the numbers thing cannot be resolved somehow, it will drive everyone out of chat and if no one is there... why have it? Grrr, this whole thing frustrates me so much!

I don't do the chat thing also. But if it is a chat room for registered users of this board and you have to sign in with your registered name and password, would this help cut down on the misuse. I am going to have to check out the chat room one of these days.
