Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying! And that's what so many who are struggling for answers say when they finally find cpaptalk. We've been there, tried that! You can ask a question here at 3AM in desperation and get a reply.That's why we're so UNIQUE in every way. I consider the members here my husband's saviors! If you consider this a rude reply it would be an honor to be put in Ozij's category! It takes a lot to get me annoyed so I'm done with this thread. Just leave my forum alone!

Okay, I think I grasp and even enjoy reading alternate identities that are both HUMOROUS and OVERT. But I fail to understand using alternate identities that are just as ADVERSARIAL as they are COVERT.

We used to have a big problem on this message board with inflammatory guest posts that were authored by people who were actually REGULAR members of this message board. So to counter that problem of anonymous attacks, Johhny put in place the "also posted as" identifying text for guest posts when their IP address matches another user ID. The good news is that IP-based feature seemed to quell the nasty problem this message board had with guest posts that were actually cruel comments by regular members. We seem to be heading in that problematic direction once again.

So I REALLY don't understand WHY regular members want to have alternate identities that are reserved for covert, adversarial comments. It baffles me for these reasons:

1) It's inherently sneaky IMO
2) It disrespects our generous hosts' "also posted as" identifying text----that was originally put in place for the same problem of anonymous attacks
3) There's absolutely NO reason why people can't firmly debate while also being civil using their main identity

Anonymous attacks under the guise of alternate identities seem to almost always fall under one or both of these motivations in my opinion: CRUELTY and/or COWARDICE.

I second what SWS said. Disturbs me greatly that this dual-identity idea is even being entertained or possible here. Posts by a couple of those regular split commenters which have proven completely useless, unhelpful, and consistently derogatory toward others are ones that I block with the "foes" list. We all know which ones those are, even if they have such cowardice as to not let on their usual identities on the forum. As SWS said, (sort of)--there's a difference between humor and cruelty.

I very much appreciate your model example on this board -SWS. I know it is not your intention to lead in any way, but there is nothing wrong with taking an exemplary role in affording people their dignity the way you do. It makes a lot of us relatively newer ones more comfortable being here when there are posters of your caliber posting. I thank you for it.

Well, I'm not sure I used the word "mean", as I find the word "mean" to lack, well, mean-ing. But if you are offering a genuine apology for something you genuinely feel sorry for, then you should apologize directly to the person, say what you're sorry for, and ask what you can do to make up for it (I'm reading this off the wall--my son wrote it out so we'd have some guidelines to follow).

Well, I would hope to see our regular members who have their secret second identities reserved specifically for HARSH comments enter this part of the discussion and describe to us WHY they think they need that secret identity for harsh posts. Of course, if you'd rather not come into this part of the discussion to rationally explain WHY your alter-ego harshness is necessary in your view.... Well, I suppose that would prove my earlier point that secret second identities reserved specifically for battle/attack mode really ARE... sneaky and cowardly pursuits.

-SWS, would you like to lead by example and show Who how one delivers a genuine apology? If, in your opinion, you don't feel he was genuine in his original apology, feel free to put him in time out for lying, one minute per each year of his age, with extra minutes penalty if he doesn't go directly there. Don't take him out until he's quiet for at least the last couple decades' worth of minutes.
