How to use Oximeter adapter on S9 xPAP machine ?

Post by liv2kite » Sat Jul 31, 2010 9:51 am

Anyone know what pulse oximeters are compatible with S9 Oximeter adapter (listed in specs under DATA OPTIONS). The only ResMed pulse oximeter I see is the S9 ApneaLink device which is a more full featured diagnostic device than needed (and which would not appear to be compatible with CPAP anyway). I notice that the ResMed software can display this data in additiion to CPAP sleep data.

I found a relevant thread (via a Google search of the internet): viewtopic.php?t=51348. I guess people are using generic pulse-oximeters with software and then using image editing software to align the data with ResMed data.

Resmed makes a specific oximetry adapter for the S9. I work at a DME and we can order them from Resmed for $149, I would guess that that is the only way to get one right now. Just ask a provider if you can buy one. Dont pay too much for it. If you use this adapter it will show up on you rescan download alongside the other information.

Is it the actual oximeter or merely a proprietary adaptor that plugs into the S9 and costs $149? If it is an adaptor, what oximeters does the adaptor work with? Do you have a ResMed part number (and possibly also the product insert/instructions) ? Is the dme that you are affiliated with able to sell it to us?

Thanks.

Do you know if the DME requires a Scrip to order one ? i order a generic finger pulse oximeter and did not need a prescription, but since this is goin thru the Dme and Resmed i'm wondering if they might require a scrip.

We give out oximeters to patients without a prescription. I have never heard any regulations on that.

I have the same question. If it is an adaptor what oximeters work with it?

The S9 requires an 'adapter'. That is the $149 item. The adapter allows a Nonin xPod to be plugged into it but this Nonin xPod is a special model with a Resmed unique plug. These xPods from Resmed aren't cheap. Then you require a finger probe. The finger probe plugs into the Nonin xPod. There is another device from Nonin that is a combined SpO2 and finger probe and is called the Nonin iPod.

The xPod is also sold under different brand names as Nonin mainly OEM these devices.

The gotcha in going down this path is that Resmed use unique plugs and I haven't found anyone anywhere who sells that type of plug.

One other gotcha that leads to extensive confusion re xPod models is that there are 2 types and each has an entirely different data flow.

The xPod datatype #1 is 3 bytes / sec. The Xpod datatype #2 is around 255 bytes of data / sec. The xPOd used by Resmed is as best as I have
been able to determine, the datataype #2 model.

Good luck

You may rest assured that many us have been through this and have the T shirt. The Contac 50E is the recording oximeter that I use. It has a rechargeable battery and charger and is one piece that fits on your fingertip and has a standard USB connection and comes with its own software as part of the package for about $130 give or take. I use a software programme called SNAGIT to capture the screen and edit out the stuff I don't need all in one shot and save it in almost any format I want (usually JPG); I do the same with my ResScan data and save it as JPG. The whole process takes very little time with the SNAGIT software. Then I dump the two images into something like MS Publisher, stretch the smaller image from the oximeter to match the timeline of the ResScan image and presto! You have an oximeter graph that matches your ResScan graphs. It is a whole lot cheaper than paying ResMed pricing to get their oximeter connected and the bonus is that you get to take it with you when you go cycling or walking to monitor your pulse rate as well. Good stuff. I bought one from semedical and they were great. I also bought one directly from Contec (Contac?) and they were also great and they shipped to my door from the far east and it arrived in something like 4 days. The one from semedical is still in the box unused.... I figured for the price they wouldn't last too long but I was wrong. I beat the heck out of mine and it still works great.... and when I am at rehab I compare with their pulse oximeter which costs like $2,000 and the readings are generally about the same. I put this on overnight from time to time (no wires to get tangled) and put a wee bit of blue masking tape on it so it doesn't fall off in the night. Just remember it's on if you get up at night to go to the washroom or "plop"... time to get #2 out of the box and charged. (Exactly what my buddy did within a week of getting his).

It is very valuable clinical information to have. Low SO2 leads to high BP which leads to being carried by six friends.

Thanks everyone for for all the additional information.

Looks like Resmed will not be in my budget, plus a bigger hassle.

I may give the Contac 50D Plus a try, it's cheaper and the battery is easy to replace. I'll try using AAA rechargeable with it. I have a couple of old devices that I can't replace the battery as they are no longer available. This shouldn't be a problem with AAA's for a very long time.

Found an excellent thread on this subject: viewtopic/t50805/S9-SpO2-module--can-an ... ml#p467306

Searched for it earlier but it was only the info from the current thread that when searched in Google returned the earlier cpaptalk.com thread.
