ResMed S8 Users: Did you like or dislike INSTANT ON ?

Post by Physician » Sun Jul 18, 2010 5:07 pm

For anyone and everyone who uses, or have used, a ResMed S8, in which when the unit turned on the pressure immediately went to your set lower limit, were you bothered by this instant rise to the lower set pressure ? Or was it tolerable or pleasant ?

I was told a rumor that S8 users wanted a slow rev up, and that's why it now takes 9-10 seconds for the S9 to get to the proper set pressure, starting at zero.

What say all you S8 users and former S8 users ?

I don't have a problem with mine. I turn it on and I have pressure by the time my head hits the pillow. I never use the ramp feature. My machine does start a little low and then the pressure will go up to it's full, but by the time my head hits the pillow it is up to full pressure adn that is good. HAve a great day, Huggies, Fay

My first (now backup) machine was an S8 and now I have the S9. I like how the S9 takes a few seconds to get to the minimum pressure... actually I also use ramp starting at 8 for 5 minutes with my minimum pressure at 9--this ramping feature was not available on the S8. It isn't so much that I can't tolerate the pressure right away as it gives me a chance to adjust my mask correctly before the pressure hits full strength--I find that it is easier to get the mask adjusted right than on the S8 where it went to the pressure of 9 right away.

JMelby--- It's NOT a few seconds. It is TEN seconds on the S9, nearly instant on the S8.

I liked instant on (S8 Autoset II) but my pressure was (only) 8-15. I wonder if people with higher starting pressures would prefer ramp more ?

Suppose the rumor were true.
If I were Resmed, I'd tabulate the preferences by pressure.
If the majority of my clients had higher pressures, and preferred a slower start, that's how I'm make my machine machine respond.

Perhaps it would have been better for them to raise the pressure slower for higher pressure users to raise the pressure faster for lower pressure users. Perhaps 0 seconds to get to 4 cmh2o, 3 seconds to get to 10 cmh2o, 6 seconds to get to 15 cmh2o, and 10 seconds to get to 20 cmh2o.

I got an S9 and I hate the way it starts slow. It stops me from getting a good breath or I hold my breath while it starts up or I have to wait to put on my mask. This part of my cpap machine is stupid. I should be able to put on my mask, start a breath then be good to go. Never had S8. Should I get rid of this s9 because it starts so slow ?

I started therapy with a S8 Elite 2, pressure of 17cm. INSTANT ON was the only way I used it!

Now I'm on a Vpap, and it's set the same way. I don't like idea of having to wait for full pressure, when I put on my mask I want to fee that first gush of air FULL FORCE.

Does this mean you enjoy the S8 having immediate good airflow and pressure ? And you would not want a 10 second slow climb to your lower set pressure ?

Has your physician or anyone told you that anyone found the fast S8 start up objectionable ?

My goodness, but this issue is REALLY bothering you, isn't it, Physician?

I started w/a Resmed S8 Elite. I used Ramp briefly but my pressure was only 8 cms. I had a Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage. I didn't use Ramp. My pressure range was set 8-13. I have an S8 1/2 VPAP Auto, IPAP 13, EPAP 8. I always turned SmartStart/SmartStop off on all my S8s. I am currently using a PR S1 BPAP Auto, I HATE and DETEST the auto start feature on ANY of these devices.

The S9 does take more time to get up to pressure -- about 10 seconds to get to pressure of 8 -- versus the S8 starting at pressure immediately. I'd prefer that it didn't work that way, but I've adjusted to it by timing those initial breaths.

bearded_two's idea sounds perfect to me!:
