Would this be safe?

Post by evbirch » Sat Jan 16, 2010 1:52 am

Just curious...

Would it be safe/possible to put a drop or two of essential oils directly into my humidifier?

I wouldn't put anything into the humidifier but water. Humidifier is for moisture. What is put into the humidifier, other then water is inhaled. Not very wise

They make special good smelling stuff to put into your CPAP's. I am not sure where to get them as we can not use them here in the lab. Maybe google it?

Ok I looked it up. On CPAP.com they make aromatherapy for CPAP's. You stick it by the filter so it sucks in the smell.
So Spirit is correct, do not put it in the water..

Ditto! Nope, never put anything in the humidifier water! Just use SleepGuy's aromatherapy.

The link to SleepGuy's site is: http://www.pur-sleep.com/

Pur-Sleep has wonderful blends of essential oils. I believe it's important to only use pure essential oils that are meant to be inhaled, so be careful about going to a store a just picking out something at random. That said, I do buy organic essential oils at my local health food store because I want the oils I inhale to be organic. I buy orange, lavender, chamomile, and patchouli. However I've decided I don't like smelling patchouli, so I now leave that out of the formula. I drop 3 drops of orange, a dab (not even a drop) of lavender, and one drop of chamomile onto a thick cotton material pad. That seems to work for me. I use the Respironics white micro filter https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... lters.htmland gray filter https://www.cpap.com/productpage/m-seri ... lters.html and change them once a month.

Some of the pur-sleep aromas, those with the white caps, are synthetic.

The essential oils themselves are unlikely to vaporize at the temps we're dealing with. They would stay in the tank until you dumped and refilled. Their fragrance would be passed (just as it is at room temp). After all, it's only your lungs at stake...

However, putting the oils on or near the filter is a MUCH better idea. Using products designed for the job is the BEST idea.

So maybe this is obvious, but I trust those of us with asthma or allergies will think twice before using these fragrances. (Personally, I cannot even begin to imagine doing it -- but then, I avoid the cosmetics department in stores lest I have to whip out my inhaler.) Different strokes.

Otoh, seeing "oils" and "lungs" in the same sentence makes me nervous for everybody.

I am like you pmcall57. I avoid all cosmetic departments as much as possible. I can't tolerate scented candles and would not use any aromatherapy while sleeping.

I would be sneezing and my nose and eyes would be running like crazy!

Everyone is different in this regard but that's me.

I have severe allergies and asthma. Many chemicals are triggers for me.

I was fortunate that I was in on one of Bret's sample sets a long time ago. I had worried about the smells being triggers for the asthma and migraines, which I also have. Not a problem. His scents are not triggers for me and I love them. I don't overdo it and unlike many that can get two or three nights from one dousing I only get one since I go easy on the drops.

Bret did offer some sample sizes on his site for people to try before investing a bunch of money. You may want to check it out to see if the offer still stands and go that route prior to purchasing some.

The sleep technician told me I could put Vick's Vaporub in my nose and the humidifier water for my stuffy nose. Has anyone ever heard of that? I never tried it....didn't think it was a good idea!

I have been putting vapor rub around my nose since I was a child, and still do even with the BiPap. It is a bad habit and I can not break it. I would not put anything in my humidifier though.
