What tape for taping ones mouth shut?

Post by Paddyboy100 » Wed Oct 28, 2009 3:18 pm

I taped my mouth last night as I dislike the chinstrap & it worked great, I used plain old masking tape & I've heard there's better tape for this, anyone know what's the best?

After experimentation, the best I've found is 2" wide Blue Delicate Release 3M Masking Tape #2080.

Must be a guy thing, my husband would probably use masking tape too. I've been using Johnson and Johnson Hurt-free First Aid Paper Tape. I couldn't find 2 inch, so overlap 2 pieces of the 1 inch. From reading here, I learned to make a little tab at the end, so it's quick and easy to remove.

Have you tried a full face mask?
The major CPAP manufacturers, Respironics, Resmed, and Fisher & Paykel, all offer a 30 mask return policy, assuming you got your equipment through a DME.
This means that you can take your mask in within 30 days of recieving it, and they should change you out to a different mask free of charge. If they try to charge you, call BS on them, or find yourseld a new DME.

Katie.....I agree that "guys understand masking tape"....but, I try not to let that sway my opinion. I tested both....the "hurt-free" and the "delicate release"...and I suspect the adhesive is exactly the same. It smells the same....feels the same....and the blue stuff is much less expensive.

I use 2" wide Micropore paper tape. You can find it at most drugstores; also, you can get it quite cheap in boxes on Ebay/Amazon. Fold 1-inch tabs at the ends for easy ripoff. I use each strip several nights, until the sticky starts failing.

I use NexCare, 2 inch paper tape. The only retail pharmacy I can find it in is Walgreen's. The 1 inch tape is sold in a lot of places BUT you want the 2 inch for better results.

I use 1" kendalls tenderskin paper tape. The one inch works fine for me. I use Roosters method of taping;

I also use a thin coat of milk of magnesia on the area the tape will stick to, not a single mark in the morning!

THanks all, I've been using 1" jahnson&johnson paper tape (because I had some in the back of the closet) with good results.

DMT-RE, I haven't tried any other mask than a nasal pillow, I will in the future for a few reasons but I'm well past any exchange dates. This mouth breathing thing seemed to start after 6 months or so.

According to my doc, his PA, the techs, and my DME: NONE.

Their reasoning, with which I concur: throw up, and you could die.

I would recommend a full-face mask. It just feels safer to me.

Incurring the wrath of others,

Wow it has been a while since I have been up here... I use Tegaderm works great and you can find it in bulk on line. The 2 3/8 X 1 5/8 (i think) is the size that I use and I cut them in half. Doesn't pull your skin off and sticks great!
Best!

I found that NexCare micropore tape made an excellent and nice-feeling seal. But removing the sticky tape residue from my face in the mornings was much more damaging to my skin than using the blue painter's tape. It took forever--and much too difficult to remove!

After a year with 2" blue tape, I am now successfully using 1" rather than 2" wide delicate surface Scotch brand blue painter's tape (same as 3M but cheaper). With the 2" tape, I had more wrinkles which eventually started to allow blow-outs at night. Not Good! The 1" tape does not wrinkle because it has less curvature of the face to cover, and is sealing much more reliably. No leaks at all. It's important that you seriously draw you lips between your teeth (gently!) with a bit of a pursing of your mouth when you tape.

Nah, no wrath. Differences of opinion are fine.

I've used tape over my mouth for over five years. Lets me use masks I can sleep in much more comfortably than I could in the Full Face masks I used my first six months of "cpap." But that's just me.

Questions:
How many times is a mask sent out for a trial use? When determined to be the "right fit" does the person testing keep to own even if it's a mask tried multiple times? How's the mask cleaned between users? Intellectually, I can appreciate the try and exchange period. On another level, I am totally grossed out by the thought I might be using a mask used by others no matter how it's cleaned between users and how germless the person before may have been. If I wasn't grossed out to start with, I would be a little less than happy if I ended up with a mask that had failed the previous 4-5 users for a month as my "new mask"!!!! There's just something unsettling about the try and return option for me!!!!
