A Swift question

Post by yawn » Thu Aug 25, 2005 6:38 pm

Is there anybody out there that can help me with something. I've been having a lot of leaks lately with my Swift so I was examining everything really closely but didn't find any cracks or holes. When I was reassembling everything, I began to wonder if everything is fitting together the way it should. I wear the tube on the right side so the 'plug' goes on the left side of the barrel. I'm not sure the plug is fitting as snuggly as it should. Does your plug fit far enough inside the barrel so that the end of the plug is flush with the plastic ring (on the left side of the barrel)? Mine doesn't...there's approx. 1/8" gab between the end of the plug and the edge of the ring (the ring is the piece that has the blue part attached to it). I can't remember if this is how it always fit or if something is wrong.
Thanks
Amy

Amy,

Try what I do. Wrap the end of the plug that goes inside the barrel with a thin layer of paper medical tape. It makes the plug fit very snug.

Has your pressure been higher lately on the machine because it causes my Swift to make more noise. But from what I've been told, that's normal. Are you sure these are leaks and not just noise?

I also tape the ends of the plug and the hose. Actually, I was removed the old tape, and put on new tape....when I was putting it back together, I noticed the gap and couldn't remember if this was normal or not.
I bumped my pressure from 9 to 10....I don't think it's much louder...I'm sure the noises I hear are leaks because when I adjust the barrel, the leak stops.

Amy,

I would think if the noises you're hearing stop when you adjust the barrel, then it has nothing to do with the plug. No? Are you saying when you adjust the barrel while you're wearing it?

You know, mine is making more noise than normal, too, lately. Funny you said that. But my leak rate is the same. I just got a new Swift today so I'm going to give it a try tonight and see if the leak rate is still as high as what mine went up to. I was at a 18-19 with mouth taped before the breaks in the short tube those other days. But since then, with the fixes I did, the leak chart shows a straight line, but it's about 33-35. Don't get it. If it was a leaky mask, it would show peaks and dips, but it's a straight line at a higher level. I'll see what happens tonight with the new one and see if the 18-19 returns. Then I'll know the tube or somewhere else does have a constant leak. But mine is noisier too.

My plug doesn't go flush. There is a tiny gap, but nothing big. I just zoomed in on one of the photos from the other night when my daughter had the Swift on. See if this helps you.

OK, my advise for the day. Take your Swift back apart and soak the plastic parts in vinegar overnight. Dry well and then put back together. I should fix your probem. Soaking it seems to expand the plastic just a bit and cleans any oils off it. It fixes all my seals and leaks. Try it.

Thanks for the picture Lori....mine looks exactly like yours. I'm anxious to hear how your new Swift performs.

R&R...Vinegar you say?? Alright...will give it a shot. Is the ratio 3:1 (water to vinegar)??

Thanks!

Well, there you go. Listen to Rock & Roll. He is always on target with his advice. I'm going to do the same to my older Swift.

So how are you, R&R? Don't see too much of you on site anymore, unless we are in different posts lately. Hope you are doing well and getting some rest in between those business trips.

About 3 to 1 is right,

I was in Tupelo for a week and when I work trade shows, I just don't get the time as I work 14 hour days and in some cases I can't get online easily.

I have been posting though, 4-5 times a day. I don't read all topics when the forum is active. Just the titles that catch my eye. [/i]

R&R,
I am a bit embarrassed to say I've become addicted, seriously, to reading and responding to the posts here. I have to learn to detach myself. It's almost like the case of a psychiatrist, the patient and tranference. I have become so involved with everyone's stories and love to read about what is going on with them and offer any help I may have, which isn't always correct or enough, but I'm trying to give back.

So you're still a busy camper. Glad you can at least check back in every now and then and show your face. Good to see you...

Hi Lori,
How was your night with your new Swift??? I had another bad night...lots of leaking. I'm going to use the Activa tonight and see if I can get some more sleep. I'll try soaking the swift in vinegar and see if that helps. If I can't fix these leaks, I'm going to give up on the Swift...I can't afford to not sleep well (like anybody can)

Talk to you later.
Amy

Amy,
What on earth is going on with this? I'm sorry you didn't sleep again.
I found a new problem, too, last night. I posted a thread for help, but I think it's going to take me 30 miles to my DME today. My humidifier, where it attaches to the machine, leaks. Or the machine leaks where it attaches to the hh. If you want, you can read the thread I posted before. Hoping someone else has had this problem before I have to drive 30 mins. to see the DME today on a day off.

I wish I had a suggestion to offer about the Swift. Mine is making more noise than usual, too. Both of them. Don't understand it, either.

Let me know if you can come up with any ideas to your problem and I will certainly do the same. And, yes, thank goodness you have your Activa to get some rest with in the meantime. But I'd hate to see you have to give up on your Swift since you really were doing great with it. What about emailing Resmed? They answered my email when the tube broke.

My swift whistled 2 nights ago, not on the next night, then again last night.

It turned out it wasn't the Swift. I actually did have a nose whistle (from a bit of congestion) that was amplified by the higher pressure and the Swift.

A shot of RhinoCort Aqua and some Benedryl took care of the whistle and hurried me off to dreamland.

Well, good for you. At least it wasn't a mask problem, WAF. I am having a new problem with a leaking hh. Does the fun ever end???

A Swift question

Post by tomkat » Fri Sep 02, 2005 12:40 pm

The rear headstrap on my Swift mask moves upward through the night.
I then wake up listening to the loud woosh of air from the gap between the nasal pillows and my nares. Any suggestions or Lab Rat fixes that might hold the rear headband in place?
