machine interferes with my nighttime radio listening

Post by brucelegs » Thu Apr 16, 2009 8:48 pm

any advice? I like to listen to the radio overnight I find it rather soothing but the addition of the machine creates static and other stuff through the radio (like secretly monitoring my breaths through the radio). I've tried plugging it into other outlets but it doesn't help. Is there somekind of plug I can add to get rid of this?

thanks in advance

Build a Faraday cage (a metal box ) for your machine.

You might try google for ac noise filters or if the radio can have an external radio or rotate the radio. Hope you get it as I like my radio also.

Is your radio plugged into the same outlet as your cpap? Try moving the radio plug-in.

Mine is not, and I don't have this problem at all. Nothing special going on, just have the cpap plugged in across the room from the radio. CPAP on the left side of the bed, radio on the right side.

Good luck!

Get one of those CPAPs that Elader has. He can hear the radio from his CPAP.

If you have the same problem w/every outlet in the bedroom the entire bedroom is probably all on one circuit whereas if you don't have a problem on another plug on the other side of the room the two plugs are probably on different circuits.

And Elader!! That torques my jaws that you can hear your radio thru your CPAP!!! I'm jealous. I sleep better w/music and when hubby is out of town I run my old music off my 'puter all night long and sleep great. UNFORTUNATELY, hubby always used the radio as his alarm in the morning so is used to music to wake up with. *sigh*

No really, I swear. In the middle of the night. It sure seemed that way. I thought it was on somewhere in the house but it wasn't.

It must be my metal fillings.

I think you should ask Elader, maybe he can solve the problem for you or fine tune your cpap to pick up your favorite shows! hehehe

Seriously, I had similar issues with feed back from cpap and static on my computer monitor that were running on the same circuit -... was an easy fix though, just plug them into different surge protectors, I used fairly expensive ones but cheaper ones I'm sure will work just as well. Totally eliminated the problem.

ooh different surge protectors, didn't think of that. I tried a different outlet but it didn't have the surge protector like the one my machine is running off of. I'm going shopping on Monday!!!

and if that fails, I will have to rewire the house

Look for a surge protector that claims to filter or clean the power. That should take the electrical noise off the line.

There's something not right here. These things should have FCC approval which means there should be no RF interference. Probably find there's some sort of power supply fault in there. list it as faulty and get the supplier to check it out

Are you listening to an AM radio? FM radio will be far less likely to receive interference than AM.

If you are using an FM radio, Radio Shack has a power line noise filter, model 61-2327m which may help.

As many have suggested, the radio noise is probably from being on the same electrical circuit, and not RF interference. This also suggests that the circuit is not properly grounded, as well grounded circuits tend to avoid this type of induced noise. Do you have 2 prong outlet or 3 prong? Do you have, or can you power one of those simple red/yellow/green outlet checkers - they basically show if the plug is mis-wired, properly wired but not grounded, or safe. Even if you have 3 prong outlets, there may not be a 3rd ground wire running between the outlet and "true ground" for your house, or it may not be properly connected somewhere.

Besides the noise you here "through" the radio, the ungrounded outlets are more likely to let your machine get damaged by electrical issues, which a surge suppressor can protect you from, as well as filter out the noise the CPAP puts back into the circuit and bothers your radio.

Or you can go with what it seems to be, CPAP putting noise into the circuit, and just get a surge supressor - Plug the CPAP into the new surge supressor, and the radio into a seperate one. Should work. If not, swap the 2 surge supressors around and try again.

Go to radio shack or any other electronics supply place. Not one of those big box places, more like a radio store. But get a choke and put it on the elctrical cord. Better yet get two so you can put one on each. A Choke will usually eliminate static or motor noise such as this. If you can't find one try a shop that installs car radio's or make your own. If you have a radio buff or ham radio operator nearby as them to help and you will be listening to your radio again soon.
