Re: As I lay myself down to sleep....
Hi everyone,
Basically, the sleep study went well. I did sleep at times, but they "made" me sleep on my back for a few hours, and I couldn't sleep in that position for very long. The other thing is that they did a titration study right off, and kept waking because of the different pressures than I was used to. Under these circumstances, I might have not had the destating/oxygen level problems because of such interrupted sleep. I thought they would be doing a more diagnostic study to find out what happens when I sleep with the bipap, rather than trying to "solve" the problem first!
Another problem was that they were using their "old" system that only went up to 20 cm. My pressure has been 20/14 for many months. In the next few weeks, they will be updating to a system that can test up to 30 cm. The director told me this at the last minute, and wondered if we should go through with the study, but we decided to try anyways, and if a second study needed to be done, then we could try again. He couldn't get anyone else in for the cancellation last night, so the room would have been empty, so we decided to risk it. I don't have to pay anything for sleep studies, because I have COBRA insurance and Medicaid. So if I need another study, it wouldn't be a problem.
Well, I'm off to sleep!!!!!! Too tired from not sleeping well last night...
Thanks!! Lovey

Re: As I lay myself down to sleep....
Although better, there is still drama going on. The reason the sleep doc had me do a titration study is because he believes that it is my sleep apnea only causing the low oxygen levels, and that he doesn't "believe in oximetry results".
Everyone else, including 2 respiratory therapists and my primary doctor, disagree and think there is an underlying medical condition that is causing me to destat at night. The sleep study on Wednesday night was not meant to diagnose what is happening with me. It is based only on that the sleep doctor beliefs that it is sleep apnea, and once my pressures are re-caliberated, the problem will go away.
I believe it is an underlying medical condition after seeing the oximetry report. The first 2 hours, I do relatively fine, with some destats. Then for 3 hours, everything goes haywire, and I am destated for most of the 3 hours, even though my pulse rate remains pretty constant. Then there is a break when I woke up, and then for 3 hours there are no problems, and I am stating between 96-100% for those 3 hours.
It may be that I have a medical condition that doesn't surface until I have been asleep for hours, and obviously, the sleep study didn't address this.
I have been sleeping most of today. I keep getting headaches. One good thing, is that my primary doctor is having me have a head CT on Monday. It is the first "independent" medical decision he has made in a long while. It is mostly precautionary, but still it makes me feel better. I don't think they will find anything on a CT scan.
I also have had a great stressor over the last few weeks, in that I have had to make a decision about what to do as a member of a board of directors for a local non-profit. The state had come in and put the agency under a plan of correction because of problems going on with the agency. No monies were being misspent or used ineffectively. The problem is that 2 weeks ago, the director sent out the board minutes to all of us, including the state officials. It says that I wrote and submitted them. I did not write them, and they were made up by the director to satisfy the needs of the plan of correction. There were some glaring errors in the minutes, such as an absent board member seemingly seconded a motion.
Basically, I would be colluding about falsified documents to the state, if I didn't speak up. The director, who was supposedly my friend, should have never put me in this moral and legal position. So today I wrote the state and blew the whistle on the director. The board president is my "best friend" and in no uncertain terms wanted for me to call in the state. So I am jeopardizing that friendship too, when it is a time when I need a lot of support. However, with all these medical issues going on for me, I can't keep carrying this heavy burden, when I didn't do anything wrong.
I did receive a positive reply from a state person. On the email reply to me, she added the following quote:
"The highest courage is to dare to be yourself in the face of adversity. Choosing right over wrong, ethics over convenience, and truth over popularity...these are the choices that measure your life. Travel the path of integrity without looking back, for there is never a wrong time to do the right thing."
I don't think the sh#@ has hit the fan yet though, and I hope I stay strong during all of this. I do have people such as my counselor to call if I need the support. Thank you for all your support during this trying time...Lovey
