I often doze during movies sitting in the dark. Yesterday was a long, active day and I expected to have trouble staying awake at last night's prescreening of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

My eyes and ears were fully attentive for the entire movie. I highly recommend it.

Oh my -- so many choices, so little space

1. Star Wars (originals)
2. Hunt for Red October
3. The Rock
4. Con Air
5. King and I
6. Camelot

and I could go on and on and on

I've always liked movies about airplanes. When I was a kid, I loved "God is My Copilot."
Then, in the 50's, John Wayne was in one (I can't remember the name) about a plane flying across the Pacific, and somehow it lost an engine and then lost (almost) all the gas. But they made it into San F. with one gallon left. (yeah, right!)
Then "Airport 75" came out (I think it was 1975) about a plane that almost crashed. Dean Martin (of all people) was the pilot.
"The Great Waldo Pepper" came out with Robert Redford and I sat spellbound through it with my kids. (I'll bet now they would have to rename it "Great Waldo Papper" if Redford was in it again)
Then there was great comedy stuff with airplanes; "1944" (John Beluchi), (I loved the part where the 2 were "getting it on" while flying.)
"Airplane" (Peter Graves), "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World" (still one of my favorites with Jonathan Winters and Sid Caesar - hilarious)
Of course, the last great airplane movie was "Top Gun".
I haven't seen a good one since then. I guess, with a little stretch, that one could say "Spiderman" was good. It had flying it it.

Anybody see "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" yet? Its made millions already. I can't wait to see it.
I hope it makes some statements about our society that will be helpful in times like these.
(hey, I'm just teasing)

I have not seen it but really really want to! My little shelby looks like the little white one in the movie.
But for me the best movie ever made was "What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams i thinks every one who has ever lost someone need to see this movie!

Sean Connery -- oh la la -- even my 26 year old daughter thinks he is hot -- always was, always will be Bond, James Bond.

He was awsome in Hunt for Red October, and The Rock -- that voice - oh that voice

Packitin: I think the airplane John Wayne movie you mention is "The High and the Mighty" - great theme music.

For most of my life my favorite movie was "It's a Wonderful Life" - now I am surprised to admit it is Edward Scissorhands.

Cool thread!

Best movie ever created? I agree with the British Film Institute: The Third Man (1949, dir. Carol Reed).

But there sure are a lot of great movies mentioned in this thread.

Some favorites of mine that I haven't seen mentioned:

Local Hero (1982, dir. Bill Forsyth) This is the one I usually call my favorite. Some people (sigh) think it's a sleep aid. . . .
My Darling Clementine (1946, dir. John Ford) I like Ford a lot, and this may be my favorite of his. (Col. Sherman Potter's favorite, too!)
Man Without a Past (2002, dir. Aki Kaurismaki) Kaurismaki's a Finn; it shows.
Lovers of the Arctic Circle (1998, dir. Julio Medem) Hauntingly beautiful and romantic.
The Train (1964, dir. John Frankenheimer) Frankenheimer's best, in my opinion.
Tampopo (1985, dir. Juzo Itami) A Japanese movie about food and sex that's also a wonderful homage to Westerns.

I could list lots more, but many folks have already mentioned some of my other choices. (Despite the fact there are no John Wayne films listed above, I like him--and John Ford, too! My nearly-four-year-old and I just watched The Quiet Man the other day. . . .)

Hey, life isn't fair!
Babs - BTW I read the book, AND sent away for the "sexy reunion scene" and actually got a letter back telling me there was no sexy reunion scene. I was crushed. 16 years old and already life wasn't being fair.

Absolutely!! Hey, Congahands, can you do the "Mawwwage" speech in a really good Peter Cook voice? I love "The Princess Bride"!! Laugh myself sick every time I watch it. And like Babs, know some of the dialog cold.
