Hi,
I am 40, I got diagnosed with sleep apnea about a year and a half ago. My dad has it, my mom..a couple aunts/uncles and I think my sister, but she
won't get tested. I use the mirage swift nasal pillow mask. I love it!! Those huge gas mask shaped things look so uncomfortable to me! My mom has one of those big ones and it causes marks on her face often. Sometimes it is an adjustment issue for her because it is too tight.

As far as getting used to it. the first 6 months were a challenge for me. I would wake up and be holding the mask in my hand, i'd see it across the room, literally! i don't know how that happened at all. But, once I just said to myself "look, this will help so many things, just focus on it and do it"...ya know,
made the decision so to speak, it has been great. i feel more energy and overall more rested. lately had a few problems not feeling as well rested, so
I go in for a retest with the mask in a couple of weeks to confirm that my prescription hasn't changed. If you are being dilligent about the mask and still
don't see improvements, you may need that too.

good luck, and though it is strange to some for a female to have sleep apnea, just remember that it used to be strange to people to think we could
vote too! They just haven't experienced or heard about more women with apnea..stay on top of it, it's for your health!

good luck

Theory: more men are diagnosed with apnea than women because what husband, in his right mind, would tell his wife she had to sleep in the guest room because she snored too loud?

Now that I'm on CPAP, though, he doesn't hesitate to tell me when I've woken him up with blasts of air. (THat does help with troubleshooting mouth breathing and leaks though )

I've been on CPAP for just over a year and what a difference it has made! I'm 63 yo and work full time. It used to be that by Thursday morning I would feel like charred toast and Friday's I was a total zombie. Now I still have some (not much) energy left over Friday afternoon after work. I have other medical issues but treating this one has made an enormous difference. My sleep apnea in sleep lab (I don't sleep well there) was defined as "mild" (original pressure titration was 7, though sleep doc suggested 14 after seeing data on my Smartcard).

All those numbers that say more men than women have sleep apnea are based only on those people they know about! As others have noted - there are holes in that method!

I'm a 48 year old women who has been on the CPAP for 6 years now. it took some time to gt use to it. and it did for me too. But now I don't even know it's on. I have the Sullivan S6 and use a cool mist humidifier with the ultramirage2 mask.

I want to vote too ! I am female, 56, on cpap since January 2008..I am lucky because I have/had no other health issues unless dozing at red lights count..I had been a zombie for about 2 yrs tho before I finally admitted defeat and went and complained to my family doctor. I had fatique as my main concern, but my blood pressure was 210/98, cholestral 206..and on and on and on..where as before all my numbers had been good. Right now I am struggling and have a titrated sleep study coming up, but my first 4 months was great with all my numbers back in normal range. Yes, I did diet and did a 3 mile walking DVD in my living room everyday but I think most of my success was due to my CPAP therapy..

The only thing that is not going to change is that Slinky is younger than me and smaller..I am 5' 8, and despite losing 30LBs, still tip the scale at 200 and a little more ! We all know men can't resist those tiny little things so I guess between having first bid and her natural cute build she wins Blackneto..but I am still lingering in the shadows and live closer !

I think most guys would generally agree,

snoring originated with women, we only started to snore from all their nagging and wanting to get along.

I was diagnosed with OSA about 4 years ago, at age 48. Like many others, I was often sleepy with headaches, etc.. Getting a comfortable mask took time, but well worth it. I can certainly tell the difference when I don't wear the mask.

Me too! I'm a chick and was started on my apap this past Wednesday. I do kinda fit the "stereotype", I'm 5ft 1in and weigh about 190 lbs, so I'm considered obese.........but now thinking back about how much my family and friends would tease me about being a "sleepyhead" and how 8 hours of sleep was never enough, I guess I've always had it, it may just have reared it's ugly head now that I'm older (30) and have gained about 50 lbs in the last couple of years (OSA along with PCOS).

I went to my doctor complaining of being tired and pounding cluster headaches almost every day. At first, I thought it was because of the baby (now 11 months old), but once he started sleeping all night, I still felt like poop despite sleeping 8,9 or 10 hours. I was thinking she'd send me to get my blood tested and finally be convinced that I needed pills for my thyroid, but instead she sent me for a sleep study and, well, here I am.

I've only been on apap for 2 nights, and it hasn't been that much fun, but from the other cpapers posts of how well they're feeling, I've seen it's worth to stick to it.

I don't feel that way anymore. My only complaint is that I wish the nasal mask was a little more confortable.
purple, my experience is just nearly identical to yours. I teach 2nd grade and often found myself nodding off during reading instruction. It was so bad that I nearly fell off my chair when I was reading to the entire class. Turning a page was a great time for a nap. The second morning after beginning CPAP was the beginning of a new life for me. I was sold. The adjustments go on and on, however, I became quite comfortable with my mask after about 3 months. I'm also your age.

For those of you who are new, some of our top posters are women.

MY THEORY ON ROOSTER'S NEW AVATAR;

1) Missing CPAPTALK.COM during the downtime, he went insane.
2) An already latent tendency to cross-dress swam to the surface.
3) He flew to Mexico and had one of those quickie cheap-o sex changes.
4) Being cheap, it wasn't very good, so it turned him into an ugly old woman.

I'm sure he regrets it now.

Most likely the REAL person behind that avatar is his Mom, or his Grandma, and he's yanking our chains.

LOL,
Babs - Who was smart enough to post a 10 year old pic on this board, as opposed to the more recent ones (which smart people found anyway)

False. You know me better than that. I have been insane for decades.

An already latent tendency to cross-dress swam to the surface.
Don't you think a photo from that angle nicely brings out my feminine side?

He flew to Mexico and had one of those quickie cheap-o sex changes.

False. I had gastric bypass and also that pesky soccerball surgically removed from my face and one of the nurses thought I was so cute she curled my hair in the recovery room. CPAP pressure unchanged.

Being cheap, it wasn't very good, so it turned him into an ugly old woman.
