I don't know brands, sorry too lazy to look up what you are checking out but having always had one on hand, We have found out that the old fashioned manual types are more accurate than the auto ones. When I go to doc's and they take mine, I always ask for another reading in addition to the auto and it is always a different pressure than on the machine type. My doc says that manual pressures are more accurate, as long as whoever is taking it can "hear" correctly.

I have been using the Omron Model HEM-711AC for several years. I am not sure thew model is still manufactured and available. It's self-inflating and operates with 4 AA batteries and also came with an AC adapter.
When I purchased it, I took it to my doctor to check and we found it accurate as it gave roughply the same readings as with the Dr.'s. I recommend you do the same.
I hope this helps.

We got this one to keep track of the wife's BP. Works well and it uploads to the PC for geek stuff like charts and graphs.

I've also been using an Omron HEM-711 blood pressure monitor for the last three years......purchased at Wal-Mart. It works with either 110 AC or on 4 AA batteries.

They now have quite a few new models.

I also use a Omron self inflating bat or a/c, not sure of the model but is't 2 years old works great. I had a older type it couldn't hear blood sounds and errored all the time. Omron is making some fine units. Jim

My daughter who is a doctor says the same thing, but those manual ones are a PIA to use.

I have a couple of the wrist Omron's and they work great, Omron claims they are clinically accurate whatever that means.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

BP cuff

While they certainly are, it is near bout impossible to do yourself, manually.

What I do when I get mine is take it in to the docs office so that we both know how far off it is & the doc has confidence in it. Certainly they will not be calibrated to Universal Standards but can show you a trend which I think is more important.

I have a semi-manual I bought at Walmart with a memory of 10 readings which works well. Semi-manual means you pump it up then let it deflate. I can't seem to find it now to get a make/model. Sorry.

I have a fully auto model UA-767 made by Life Source (Life Time Warranty, fwiw). Push one button it does everything including turning itself OFF. However it has NO memory at all, when you turn it off , its gone forever.

I think the thing to know is that the cuff comes in different sizes. Be sure to get one the fits your arm correctly. If it doesn't in can affect the readings. Ask your doc if you are not sure which size cuff you need.

Mckooi, I don't imagine there's a Walmart where you are.
So where on earth are you?

Wishing you the best my friend,
GumbyCT
ps. I have a spreadsheet I use, if you want it pm me your emale.

My doctor gave me a coupon for $40 off a Reli-on BP monitor if I filled my RX for Diovan. I did and I used the coupon at CVS to buy the HEM 741 CREL model. It's fully automatic and keeps records of yours and one other users' readings.

My wife and I use the Microlife premium wrist monitor, it has 30 memories for two separate users with date and time, also has blood pressure analyzer software, USB cable for PC download, so when we go to our Dr.'s appointment he can plug it into his computer and download both our blood pressure data.

The model number is 3AX1-4U, bought it at Wall-Mart, had it a couple years now and it works great and has a 5 year warranty.

Regards,

Dan

BP monitors

Post by Captain_Midnight » Sun Jul 20, 2008 9:04 pm

I think for automatic intsruments, the Omron is the most widely used; and I've seen the brand in scientific studies involving home BP recording.

I prefer the manual kind, in which I can actually hear the systole and diastole. I'm sure that I can do this better than a machine, but I don't think that the accuracy of the automatic is that far off. At any rate, Many like the convenience of an auto, and the data recording features on some might be handy.

BTW, my b.p. has steadily improved w xPAP. Last reading* 108/58. I'm on the lowest dose of a single med, so I'll be campaigning this year to go drug free.

Good luck finding a monitor.

* This was a home reading. My office readings are often significantly higher.

I have taken my Omron to the docs office and it calibrated just about right on.

DIY manual monitor?

Post by Captain_Midnight » Sun Jul 20, 2008 9:16 pm

Poster Gumby writes...While they certainly are [more accurate], it is near bout impossible to do yourself, manually.

And, this is correct if one is describing a "classical" bp cuff and sphygnomanometer using a separate stethoscope.

There is, however, a nifty little setup in which the bp cuff incorporates the sound diaphragm (aka chestpiece), so when you inflate it, the diaphragm is directly over the brachial artery. The earpiece is also attached to the cuff, so all one needs to do is put on the cuff (the directions will show you how and where), the earpiece, and squeeze the familiar skwoosh-skwoosh-skwoosh bulb.

Then, you watch the manometer dial while you listen for your pulse to appear then disappear.

It was spooky at first, now I enjoy it.

(As I look at the "simple" directions above, I wouldn't blame anyone for getting the automatic.)

Plus as you get older the hearing and the memory go - so having an auto (with a display) is a bonus. With the auto you can do it with background noise.
