weight issues

Post by houltkin » Sun Jul 20, 2008 1:38 pm

When I went on cpap, I was told that I would lose weight and have lower blood pressure.

The blood pressure is definitely coming down, but I'm really hungry all day and as a result my weight is up. I had not gained weight in several years, so I have to think the increased energy makes me want to eat more.

Anybody else have this problem?

Yup, that happens. Metabolism speeds up and you're hungry.

Trick is to modify your eating habits so you eat MORE, but GOOD FOR YOU FOOD.

I haven't perfected that yet.

Also, use that new energy to go work out.

Still working on that.

I've joined a gym, and managed to gain 12 pounds in the past year. Baby steps.

Good luck!

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

Well, I guess you can be comforted by the fact that muscle weighs more than fat.

I have way too much bad food in the house, but I am working on that. I, too, buy veggies and they get thrown out because they are forgotten. I am eating more fruit, though. I know, more carbs. What a curse.

I'm the Queen of the Dead Veggie Drawer. Quit honing in on my turf.

Try the "It's the Carbs, Stupid" Thread. We're swapping good veggie recipes.

Good luck!!!

Weight

Post by Weight » Sun Jul 20, 2008 5:04 pm

I didn't find the cpap helped my weight either. The only thing that seems to
help me is diet and or exercise. But for the exercise to help me it needs to
be more intense than walking and total 3 hours or more a week. I hate it.
Well I lost 10lb the past 2 months I only need to loose another 100 or so.

I also have hi blood pressure, diabetes and I stutter. Would you believe
that losing weight helps my sleep apnia,hi blood pressure, diabetes and
my stuttering too. Seems anything that hurts my breathing makes my
stuttering a little worse. But being skinny wouldn't cure it either_ but it sure
would be nice.

I stutter when I get excited. I wonder if there's a correlation between your BP and your stuttering? Probably not a complete cure, but I'd be interested in someone studying that angle.

My Mom just bought this ten minute exercise in a box thing off TV. I'm waiting to hear if it's any good. She panned the Fluidity bar I talked her into buying. Luckily, she resold it on Craigslist.

LOL,
B.

Woody's question re stuttering

Absolutely. From my experience, and from what I've read from other posters, OSA causes speech halts and pauses (a form of stuttering), and xPAP treatment is effective in treating.

I used to speak like John Wayne, with pauses and halts, while I tried to connect my thoughts to words. Now, after 2 1/2 years of PAP therapy, I'm much more loquacious and find that I need to be careful not to "motor mouth". The pauses and halts are things of the past.

My last incarnation was as a personal trainer and gym owner (thus "crossfit). Yes, muscle weighs more than fat. More correctly, a one inch square of pure muscle with weigh three times more than a one inch square of pure human fat. So, to really find out if your losing anything, you need to use more measures than the scale. Try measuring yourself - chest/bust, waits, hips, upper arm, forearm, thigh, calf. Put these measurements into a variety of online programs to find out what percent fat you are. Then only be concerned about fat lose, not weight loss. You don't want to lose muscle or organ tissue. You only want to lose fat.

Good tips, Crossfit! Thanks!!!

I bought a body fat scale and plan to start paying attention to THAT rather than just the weight.

Cheers,
Babs

Babette I just love that avitar of yours. Captin thanks for that info too.

I have diabetes and went on a verry low carb diet 2 months or so ago.
That and uping the amount of exercise I get seens to be helping my
weight and diabetes. I saw an article recently about Sesame oil. The
article says that people who start using this instead of other cooking
oils have lower blood pressure and lose a few pounds without dieting.
I may try this too but between my low carb diet ,exercise and a diabetic
med that sometimes causes weight loss I would never be sure what
was helping.

Oh about 8 months ago I found that having a double hernia repair and
being in a world of pain let me loose 25lbs in 6 weeks. This side effect
passed and I found that lost weight again drat it! Two of my doctors joked that it might be good for me to have an operation every 2 or 3 months
to get more weight off. Of cource I took my cpap to the hospital and reconnecting it was the first thing I did when I got home. I found that they had adjusted my full face mask at the hospital better than I had had it.

Just be aware not to put too much "weight" into individual readings:

Does sex count as "exercise" in that 12 hour period?

Not that I'm getting any...

Babbet, yes sex is exercise. Even phone sex can be counted as breathing
exercise. By the way if you ever pass through Atlantia Ga. I have an extra cpap and plenty of masks .... Just kidding

Exercise guestion-joke

I was sleeping and started dreaming. In this dream I saw a rabbit in the woods. The rabbit changed into a fox and started chasing me. I turned
and started runing for the barn... the dream ends because I fell out of
bed and hurt my knee. Does this count as an exercise ingery after all I
was running in the dream?

lol, Woody.. I don't think that's the kind of regular exercise you can count on. Especially if you like having knees that work

Phone sex breathing exercise, eh? Sounds like dodgy late-night infomercial fodder. Personally, I've never felt quite that way about phones and don't really understand why it seems so popular...
