There are a few contraindications for it - mainly brain injuries and polio. Like any narcotic, it can cause massive depression if you ever decide to stop using it - especially in the above populations. Dr. Richard Bruno (one of the top post-polio doctors in the US) has recommended that the FDA withdraw its approved use for fatigue in polio survivors.

Provigil
I don't understand how they can call it a cure for OSA, c'mon you still have the obstruction problem. My son in law is a drug rep and was selling it for awhile. I know it makes you feel better and more alert, but I stay away from stuff like that and prefer to get energy through diet and good sleep and some excercise

use of provigil
I am a teacher that has chronic fatigure. I take provigil on ocassion when I need that extra push that I just don't have in me. It makes me more alert and able to press on when I don't feel there's anyway. I wouldn't recommend it on a daily basis. It can give you the jitters

I went to the Provigil.com site, read it, took the test, scored a Twenty on it, and decided next time I am at the Sleep Doc to discuss it. I would like to try it.

ML?
You don't think that test was meant to make people feel like they really need that stuff? The test is just an ad for the drug.
It's a less subtle way of making you feel you NEED that new SUV by making people who own an SUV appear to be worry-free, fun-loving and have perfect teeth in TV ads.

I found Provigil very speedy and that it lasted so long that it disturbed my sleep the night after taking it.
It is speedy enough that some people abuse it. Have one friend who drives me nuts tweaking on it..
Strattera was a better choice for me. It doesn't seem to have much negative impact on subsequent sleep.

Well, that's sort of what I thought, I'll probably get the scrip and save it for those days when I feel exceptionally crappy....I am afraid of drugs since I feel my experience with welbutrin triggered my apnea to get significantly worse in the first place....I'll never get my doctor to admit it though.

I took Provigil 2001 in early illness. I went from insomnia one week to super somnia the next. My psych doc said that she had one patient who was on over 2,000 mg with no toxicity, but I can only imagine how rich you must have to be to afford that dose. I was on half that and my insurance company balked.
It is now documented that if you have been on any of the stimulants before using Provigil, then the Provigil just doesn't work. This is also my experience. I am now on several hundred mgs of stims per day just to keep me awake. I have central sleep apnea with over 1200 apneas per night.
I do worry about what will happen when I want to get off these stimulants. The doctors say I won't live that long. But hey, I'm six months post their predictions now.
I'm now battling with my circadium rhythm being messed up, but thats another story.
Try to stay on the Provigil as long as you can. Once you go to the stronger stuff, you can't go back it seems.

(In response to Frostman's statement about it treating OSA.)
I use a bi pap at night to treat the OSA. It was confirmed in my 3rd sleep study that is properly being treated.
If you have a 2nd sleep disorder (like me - idiopathic hypersomnolence) then the Provigil helps you stay awake during the day to treat that disorder.

SLeeplessntenn: from my and others experience wellbutrin should not be taken after about noon as it will cause sleeping problems. I no longer take it, but it was probably the best anti-depressant I have used. Most ppl I know on anti-depressants eventually ended up on wellbutrin. But like all drugs, the effects are different with each person, so some experiementation sometimes is warranted.

I am currently taking provigil Mon-Fri when I work. The reason is because even though I am a mask-breather at night to cure my OSA, I still have trouble staying awake at meetings or presentations where someone is speaking. Provigil is an anti-narcolepsy drug and it has helped tremendously with me tending to nod off during meetings/presentations. I also notice that I don't get the "afternoon sleepies" like I used to around 2:00 in the afternoon.
The best person to ask, in my opinion, about taking provigil is a pharmacist. More often than not they know a lot more about any given drug than your sleep doc will.
Hope this helps.
