Hey Terry
Great to have a fellow Buckeye on here, I checked those sites you told me about and they are just as good as this one excellent information cruisin' around on those forums. After signing up with the Cardiac Rehab today the Tech I talked to suggested that I sit down and talk with a Registered Dietitian, which I had pretty much planned on doin' anyway, I want to get as much info as possible and decide what works best for me. Where you at in Ohio? I always try to leave but always end up back here. Last year I was in Vegas, but my family couldn't make the move at the last minute so I had to come back, which really wasn't that hard, there's no place out there I'd really like to live, loved the climate, hated the pace my oldest son, 14, was growin' up if you know what I mean, so here I am again!!! Well if you ever need anything just holler.

I never had any problems with cholesterol until recently. The past few years I've had some major health problems. As I said, an arrythmia problem since my 20s, with the ablation a few years ago.
Then I got breast cancer. I was taking Premerin, which I believe helped hold down the cholesterol, but went off of it when the cancer arose. My particular kind of cancer was NOT estrogen sensitive though. I had chemo and radiation, and am not too sure that hasn't had something to do with my cholesterol. One doctor told me my new low blood pressure was due to chemo. If it changed the blood vessel walls that much, it could also be doing other things. I know I had a fingernail defect from chemo, I had some temporary nerve damage that made me claw my arms, lots of muscle cramps...etc. When you try to find out what the long-term damage is from chemo you can't find it. It is a well-kept secret.
All I want to know is when I have a new, strange symptom happen, can I ignore it as an effect of chemo or do I need to bring it to a doctor's attention? I would take chemo again tomorrow as the alternative isn't pleasant.
I tried the low carb diet for awhile, but couldn't be satisfied on it. (I was ready to bang my husband in the head with a skillet for his bowl of oatmeal) Plus it is hard on the kidneys, and my sister who did that diet many times has lost 60% kidney function. So that isn't an option for me. I have had kidney problems in the past although everything is OK now. (cross fingers)
My eating habits are like this. No breakfast. Sometimes nothing but a piece of bread or fruit for lunch. Once in awhile a very small serving of a leftover.
Supper is normal and hearty, which may consist of chicken, beef or fish, with baked potato, rice or pasta. Sometimes sphagetti & meatballs with garlic bread and salad. Lots of salads and always a vegetable or two. I don't eat bread other than that one slice for lunch maybe twice a week, or if I have, like tonight, tuna fish sandwiches. Or buns with hamburgers. I make pie or cake only rarely. We do eat pizza maybe twice a month. Tacos once a month. I fix some frozen store bought casseroles when I am particularly busy, usually chicken lasagna, which has spinach and carrots in it, or a chicken or beef pot pie.
Have ice cream maybe once or twice a month. Candy maybe 3 times a month. I usually don't snack, but if I do, snacks may be dried apricots or raisins, or sometimes peanuts. No cheese, other than on pizza or a hamburger or taco.
I drink diet coke and unsweetened iced tea.
Most of the beef I fix is roast. Sometimes meatloaf or a hamburger.
Chicken is usually stir-fried in olive oil with veggies, or baked. Fish is tuna salad or baked salmon. Eggs are confined to what's used in recipes, other than maybe every two months I'll fix a bacon and egg SUPPER, not breakfast. Have fried butterfly shrimp every couple of months. Pork chops on a bed of rice & vermicelli once in a while.
I have a new occasional supper of grapes, apples, bananas all sliced with a sprinkle of english walnuts with a low-fat vanilla yogurt dressing. Yummy! And healthy!
So there you have it. Nothing that just screams high cholesterol diet, because most of the bad things I eat are spread out over time with lots of healthy eating in between.

Just back from vacation and finished reading all the posts here. I am 41, 5'7" and 217 pounds. The cardiologist had told me to lose 15 pounds (to start with mind you) in three months. I said you have got to be kidding me. Well, 3 months later and I actually gained 3. I am so glad I followed the special K diet, ate only salads etc. If i could excercise 1 iota of time that I spend at work it would be great. I travel atleast 2 hours at a minumum daily to work and work an easy 12-14 hour days. I am lucky to get home in time for the kids to get to bed. The weekends are spent taking care of the yard and the kids. Usually by this point, I have so little energy left. So now I will start to get up at 5:30am, go for a walk, (I have to get my bike out of storage and get it fixed). I can't walk at night due to roaming bears.

Tried the atkins diet once, lost 7 lbs then nothing after that. I don't have time for that south beach diet and I am just at a loss now. I have no time to "plan, shop or prepare" special meals.

Long before I was diagnosed with OSA, I used to work out at a gym and did an hour and half of cardio at least 4 times a week and mixing in some light weight lifting. Lost weight then but could never get to the ideal weight for my height- nowhere close.

Anyway, I will be charting that course once again of trying to lose weight, be enormously cranky and will probably end up binging. Atleast the weight gain has ebbed a bit since I starting with the CPAP.

I am 28, 6'3" and wheigh 210 pounds.

I a not exactly a chiseled adonis but never consider myself fat, the main problem I have is that whieght always goes on to my face and neck first so trying to loose a few pounds to see if helps me at all.

Well, I found a super nice bike at a garage sale today. The lady said she paid over $300 for it a year ago and I paid $75

I actually went for a ride with my kids, pulling my 3 year old in the trailer behind me and boy was that a heart pumping time.

I didn't even realize my heart could pump that hard!!

Anyway, I'm going to try to go for at least a short ride 3-4 times a week, I have got to start somewhere.

Does know anything about how biking can help lose weight vs. walking???

SWE?

If you look at one of those activity charts that show the amount of calories expended per each of various activities, I think bicycling burns up about 1/2 the calories of walking and about 1/4 the calories of running, but it's a great low-impact form of exercize. I used to bike the 3½ miles to & from work each day and run errands for the office in downtown Milwaukee. The bike trip home was a killer at first - up c. 140 ft elevation in about three blocks - but I got so I could do it! (Some cars couldn't climb that hill!) Haha. Those were the days!

I'm 60 years old, female, disabled with post-polio and damage from an auto accident. Right now I weigh about 230 - down from 266. But that keeps fluctuating.

I have always been heavy (weighed 87#when I was 7) but I think Jr. High I was my skinniest at 127 (wore size 11). Skin & bones according to my grandmother!

Tried every diet in the book. But the Carbohydrate Addicts eating plan helped me to lose about 30#, but made me terribly constipated, so I had to modify it. Then a year later I suddenly started losing weight again. All I had done differently was to start eliminating Aspartame(NutriSweet) from my diet. As it turns out the stuff actually prevents you from losing weight! So I was down to 220!!! Yay!!! (I had gained a little back from the 230)

But then I got sick and my blood sugars went crazy. Now I have probably gained another 15-20# just trying to balance that and the Rx. The Dr. just lowered my Rx again, but I still have to eat more than I usually do just to keep my sugars up where they belong! < >

As someone else mentioned here, it is really hard to balance a low-carb diet with blood glucose levels, because it is often necessary for you to eat between meals in order to counteract the Rx.

Much of my recent gain has also been in my face and upper body. Wonder if xPAP therapy is in some way increasing the O2 in the upper body tissues? I have never gained weight in this way before (It usually goes to my hips first!)

Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

- JB

JB, I think the weight gain to your upper body is called...HERE IT GOES...
AGE. I have found the same thing happening to me, and I'm only about 10 lbs overweight. It seems it is all going to my midsection and face if I gain a pound or two. If I lost that 10 lbs I'd like? I might get the midsection perfect but have sticks for legs. Didn't used to be that way.

I think for those of us who are overweight, biking is a great exercise because it isn't as hard on our knees and hips as walking or running. So many overweight people need hip and knee replacement surgery because we're just putting too much pressure on our joints. Biking doesn't do that, nor does swimming. (Unfortunately, swimming requires being seen in a bathing suit )

I am a 50yo male, 6'4", 250lbs. Everyone says I look normal weight and doctors aren't suggesting I lose any, but I want to drop 30lbs. I felt best and healthiest when I was in the 220 to 230 range.

The latest BMI scale suggests I'm obese, which even the doctors laugh at. I would have to weigh 205 to be in what they consider a "healthy" weight. I weighed 205 when I graduated college and everyone told me i was too skinny and unhealthy looking. I'm not sure how they come up with these numbers, but like everything else, we need to do what makes sense for our own individual case.

Hey Iwanna
Man I can relate to those ridiculous weights, when I was in the Air Force I was 6'3" and weighed 220 they wanted me down to 201 and I told them there is no way after going through football 2 a days the least I ever weighed was 215. I don't know where they come up with these numbers, but you gotta figure there's a bunch of anorexic health specialists sittin' around laughin' at us. I know anything below 230 I look like a scarecrow. How do you like your Cpap setup, it's almost exactly what I have ordered, I'm getting the Pro 2 instead of the auto but everything else is the same.

Hi IWannaSleep,

You have just become my idol, unless I have my calculations are wrong or you are fibbing us! But first!!!!

dirtsurfer57 - Nice bit of flak you served up, but then again you're a flyboy so I guess we should expect that of your kind. Just tried to use one of those Emoticons, my first one so I hope it works. Sure don't want to get you big guys all upset with me- little bugger that I am. But anyway, you did not impart any vital statistics - at least any current ones that we are all interested in. Just how much do you weigh now? Fess up!!!!

Back to my Idol. Just made a post 2 R&C pre vacation calculation and it appears you weigh 3.289 pounds per inch. On my 70 inch 260 pound frame, I weigh 3.714 pounds per inch. So, seeing as how you're my idol and all I would only have to lose 29.75 pounds to achieve idol status.

You have given me hope. All along I thought I had to lose at least 75 pounds ( and grow an inch of hair) to turn heads in a different manner in which they are turning now.

As I said earlier, all these intricate calculations were done post 2 and now 3 R&C's and am still getting the hell out of town tomorrow AM. dirtsurfer57 please don't get upset and tell your buddies cause I am "winging it".

Bob F

PS- do you know how I can get an upgrade????

Hey Bob
The bombers are scramblin' now, I'm punching in the coordinates as you are reading this!!!!! Now if you'd checked I was the 2nd person on this post but I know how you jarheads and ground pounders are if someone doesn't give you an order you are lost!!!!! As of today I am 6'3" and a beefy 290, someday I hope to be a lightweight like you but that may take a little while. I would kill for that inch of hair you was talkin' about, all I've got left is skin up there, not even enough hair for a decent comb over!!!!! Keep the humor comin' Bob, it cracks me up.

Hi Roger (aka Dirtsurfer),

I live in an innerring suburb (might as well say city) of Cleveland.
Ever visit here? Why did you want to move to Vegas? My son and his new bride got married there....Vegas is too much glitz for me....

You guys are a hoot.....all those numbers you are throwing around are making my head spin!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Roger...I saw you have a remstar pro cpap (w/cflex I assume???) what interface do you use???? I was trying to decide between remstar w/cflex and heated humidifier, GK420G w/heated humid, and now after doing somemore research, considering the FisherPaykel w/heated humidifier because they do have a lighter weight model w/an AMBIENT hose feature that helps knock out rainout. Do you have rainout probs w/the pro?
If you had to choose between "cflex" and "freedom from gurgling humidifier and rainout" which would you choose?????????????
Does your humidifier gurgle? Do you gargle? Yikes the heats getting to my brain........Is it hot in Marion? Terry

Hi Sleeping,

Biking burns cals at about 1/3 the rate of running, ie for every mile you would run you would need about three on the bike. Back in the early spring I was riding about 8 miles two or three times a week on the stationary bike at the local fitness center. I stopped going after about two months because with the apnea I was just too tired during the day. I'm hoping once I get my CPAP wrangled and under control I'll have more energy to do a ride before work. I lost a few pounds over the last couple of weeks by finally cutting out soda and M&Ms (one of the ladies at work keeps a big jar on her desk darn her). Of course my son's first birthday was this weekend and it was in the 90's and humid so I downed about four Cokes during the course of the day. I only ate the strawberries off my piece of cake so I consider that a small victory.

Hey Terry
Well I moved to Vegas cause I got an opportunity to go into business with a friend of mine. Excellent business, helping charities set up there golf tournaments and helping them run them. I couldn't believe I got paid to do this but like they always say you should never work with friends or family and now I know why they say that. I also was selling Timeshares out there and that is quite a business, Las Vegas is the Timeshare Capital of the World right now and people are lining up to buy them. All good things must come to an end though, my family wasn't ready to pull up roots so I'm back in the Buckeye State and HUMIDITY!!!!!!!! Haven't been up to Cleveland in a couple of years, put Satellite systems in a couple of bars in the Flats by Jacobs Field, had alot of fun up there though. As far as my Remstar I haven't had the privilege of using it yet the DME ordered it and it's supposed to be here anytime, can't wait.
Take it easy
Roger
Oh yeah almost forgot, yeah it's Hot down here in Marion, at least you've got the Lake to cool things off a little.
