I have a wide face and I started having leaks around the head piece sleeve also. I loosened the strap that pulls the mask to the face and tightened the over head one. It helped, but teflon tape really solved the problem! I have tape wrapped around all cylindrical parts and a strip in the groove on the air vent clip. (be careful not to block the airholes doing this). I wash the whole mask without taking it apart once a week and then rewrap the tape once a month.

Cheers.

Yikes! Maybe I am doing mine to much. I take it apart and wash it EVERY day! Too much?

I take the pillows off every morning and wash them. I don't wash the rest of it very often, because I've heard that taking it apart will cause it to wear out faster. I should say, I used to do this with the Swift II, now I do it with the Headrest. I just wash the pillows part. Having that part clean helps it seal better.

If not then I will talk to ResMed about the nasal aire II.
Thanks!
ResMed doesn't make the NA II. I think it's teleflex, though there are a bunch of names for the company that does make it, so I'm never quite sure. It's the same company that makes the Bravo and the Hybrid. Good masks, all of them.

The NA II is my favorite mask after the Headrest/Aura/Twilight (goes by all 3 names, the current one is the Headrest). The Headrest is by far my favorite.

Now there's a mask for anyone with a big head! The headgear on it was huge! Eevery time I put it on, I'd think this mask was made for "The Big Giant Head" and laugh. I eventually took off the headgear and now use the home made pantyhose tights straps.

The one reason I still hang on to the Swift is that I can't read in bed with the NA II or the Headrest, but the Swift is great for that. Still a nice comfortable mask. I have to wear reading glasses and the others don't work too well with them.

But for side sleeping, there's nothing as good as the Headrest!

It might be due to the wider face. I have indian in me so I have high cheekbones. But let me tell you I couldn't find my teflon tape and need to go to the store to purchase it. Well I put it on my mask last night. I put it on the end of the tube, on the end of the stopper, on the two openings of the pillow itself and it stopped the leaking. The leaking is gone. I am so estatic. Thanks everyone for this suggestion. However, the company has not sent me my new mask yet. Will have to call again.

"the two openings of the pillow itself"???
Wouldn't that be where the air goes up your nose?

No if you pull the ends off of the middle part it would be the plastic cylinder shaped part that the pillow wraps around. Does that make sense? I wish these things had names, might make it easier or if they do I wish I knew them. LOL But I am telling you the teflon tape is a miracle. No more air leaks. I must say I have to try it around the vent opening in the front without covering the holes though. It is so quiet now. I love it.

large head comment- me too!

Post by packer » Tue Oct 23, 2007 6:58 pm

swift was my favorite for quite a while-- I also have large head [hat] size

my biggest problem with swift was noise and leaks when sleeping on side

I used a little bit [ like 1 inch by 3] inside of the tube part of swift- lots quieter

reason I am writing though- large head size-- the mask for you might be the twilight np aura whatever it is called--
it fits me best of any mask I have tried- doesnt ride up on my big noggin like it apparently does on some people- if you read about all the fixes for it you think it doesnt work very well-
but here is the deal-- for me it works great right out of the box-

best mask I have found out of 6 tries-- if you can try one somehow it might be answer packer

Hi Packer,

This may be something I need to try, however I am concerned that my insurance company will only accept ResMed because that is who I have to use now. I am not sure how that works.
I used the teflon tape as I stated in a previous post but something happened last night that hasn't happened before. The tube that connects it to the machine and the piece that holds the tube to the pillow system pulled out twice last night while I was sleeping. This is also the new mask that ResMed sent me.
Is the mask that you are suggesting as quiet as the mirage swift? I am gettig extremely fed up because since using the CPAP I don't think I have slept an entire night without waking up at least once because of this thing.

Hi,

I've had the most success with the Swift II so far but have had various leak issues. I've used the teflon tape around the threads on the ends of the pillow and this helps. I have also found that getting the tension just right on the straps make a *big* difference and yes, on one occasion I didn't have the headgear put together correctly. Now I always check to be sure the stitching is on the *outside*.

Finally, the DME respiratory therapist said I needed size medium pillows but I have rather large nares. So I tried the size large and that is working better for me. I still occasionally get some leaks but it's fairly rare.

The sleep tech tested my mask with both the medium and large pillow and said both had an acceptable leak rate (around 40 at a higher pressure than I use).

It has been largely trial and error trying the many helpful suggestions on this forum. I've tweaked a number of things and the last 3 nights have been wonderful! AHI finally down to 2-3 and leaks within published limits, minimal wake-ups, and I feel so much more rested!

Mindy

Mine keeps coming off in the middle of the night!

I put it on as tight as I can since it has been coming off, and I'll wake up and it's on the ground...

Any advice?

Someone on here (I apologize I don't remember who) on this topic stated that if you cut the hook side of velcro and put inside the strap so that it grabs on to your hair it will stop coming off. Don't know if you tried this yet or if you have to do this with but seems like it would work.

Swift I vs. Swift II

Post by ThStoddart » Fri Oct 26, 2007 2:10 pm

I recently upgraded to the Swift II after using the original Swift for over a year. The Swift was a Godsend -- I had given up on CPAP therapy years before because of mask issues, but the Swift was perfect.

So I was excited to upgrade to the new, improved version.

However, I have had recurring problems with leaks. It's assembled properly, not using excess tightness on the straps, etc. But the amount and frequency of the leaking is something I NEVER experienced with the earlier model.

There is clearly a design flaw in the new version and one shouldn't have to use plumbers tape or any other home-fix to address a faulty product. I'm sending mine back.

Silicon Tape

Post by tgrove » Thu Nov 01, 2007 8:23 am

I had the same problem, and fixed it with some of that clear stretchy silicon based plumbers emergency repair tape. Actually, I keep it around for emergency repairs, like when the new puppy chewed through the small hose on my swift. I cut a small piece of it and wrapped around the plug. It was a B*&ch to get back in but once there, no leaks. the whole teflon tape idea sounds promising as well. Next time I disassemble the thing, I may try it. With the silicon tape, I loose some "rotatability"

Mirage Swift II

Post by kcinaz » Thu Nov 01, 2007 11:09 am

I also found the Swift II to leak way too much as well. I will try the silicon and teflon tape fixes as recommended.

If I had the mask where it wasn't moved at all, it is really quiet, but once you rollover, the headgear would pull the nasal pillow joints apart just enough to let it start leaking a lot.

It seems to me that they need to make the whole nasal pieces about 1/4 in wider.

So I've also gone back to the original Swift mask.
