Chicken dies after drinking Chinese bottled water
Mon Sep 10, 10:34 AM ET Reuters
Think a bottle of mineral water might have poisoned you? Then test it on a chicken.
One Chinese family on the southern island province of Hainan had just that idea when one of their number started vomiting blood after drinking a bottle of water, a newspaper said.
They fed the luckless chicken the rest of the water to see what would happen, the Beijing News said, citing a report in a local paper. "The result was the chicken died within a minute," it said, showing a picture of a man holding a plastic bottle squatting over the crumpled body of the bird.
The province's authorities were investigating, it added.
Barely a day goes by without some new scandal over a made-in-China product, be it toys, toothpaste or fish, which has raised safety concerns in major export markets around the world.

Rooster,
I showed this article to my husband who goes to China about 3 times a year on business and he is a little freaked. He usually drinks evian when there but has had Chinese bottled water.
Ironically what he is doing there is demonstrating the mini mass spectrometer that he and his company developed to the Chinese govt for use in cleaning up the country. The are trying to clean it up for the Olympics. They are starting a HUGE fleet of vans all equipt with tons of chemical detection devices for remote testing.
By the way, this would be a non-issue if Americans weren't so damn focused on getting everything as cheap as possible. Instead of putting quality at the top we put cost at the top. Walmart has changed America. I hope the toy scares changes us back. I miss the craftsman era type thinking.

I had thought that it was a Chinese company that made the toys that had lead paint in them. My Dad pointed out to me that American companies like Mattel go over there and set up factories and the the workers are local. That one made me go, hmmmm.
That is scary about the water though and the tainted pet food and other foods that come from there. We should never jeopardize our health and safety to save a buck.

I never buy any food (or drink) that's made or processed in China. They're a little too lax on the safety rules for me.
Wait till they start selling defective made in China Chryslers over here.....

This just in:
A chicken that was earlier reported as dying from consuming supposedly tainted water that was bottled by the Peoples Chemical and Water company has been found not to have consumed said water.
Instead, we have discovered that the owner went on a water binge, drank heavily of the Peoples Water and choked his own chicken. Overcome by remorse of this fact, and due to someone having taken his picture while standing over the corpse, he invented this story about toxic water.
The Government of China wishes to assure everyone that the Peoples water is fine, and poses no threat when used by those that do not binge on it.

Ok.... So am I to surmise that instead of twisting their necks or just lopping off their heads, chickens are being given Chinese bottled water to make for a less violent and messy entrance to the world-wide food chain? Not much would surprise me... the way the world is now.

I also wonder how that "water" works as paint and graffiti remover, or metal polish, glass cleaner, bug and tar remover, degreaser or "no soap needed" laundry water.

My wife is Chinese and when we go back to China to visit her relatives she always buys bottled water for me. For herself, she just boils the tap water but says I am much better off drinking the bottled stuff. Hmmm...this article s causing me to rethink that.
The question which remains is, if you are unable to drink the bottled water in China, what CAN you drink? Dang!

If you ever buy any processed foods, you may be consuming ingredients of Chinese origin without even knowing it. Not just processed foods, either: I was surprised to read that "garlic and pine nuts are also big exports. So are instant coffee and dried berries like the ones found in breakfast cereal."

I always wondered what the "Chinese Water Torture" really involved. Now I learn it's about choking your own chicken....
The things I learn on this forum....

Hey, don't re-up your life insurance policy and see if she quits feeding you bottled Chinese water....
