drowning at night...

Post by corymomma » Mon Sep 24, 2007 2:28 pm

Hello everyone, I'm still a relatively new hosehead to these parts, and still seem to be working the kinks out of the whole mess.

I fully admit I am sleeping much, much better, no questions asked

I have 2 issues though:

I use the "ComfortLite Nasal Interface System" mask...I have found that I am yanking it off my head and/or it is falling off my head (very likely as well) in the night...I know give it time, but when it's slipping off my head time won't help, and if I loosen the straps it won't seal properly grrrrr....so that is my first issue, all be it a small one, it's irritating to no end...

My next issue is the more severe one in my opinion. I keep waking up feeling like I am drowning, only to realize the condensation inside the mask has built up to the point that I am drowning...at times I am dumping out as much as a tablespoon of condensation, then shaking out and drying out whatever else is left in it. I've tried raising the temperature, lowing the temperature to both extremes with the humidifier. I've covered the hosing with blankets, and covered even the mask part lightly with a pillow, including the head piece. And still I wake up "drowning" last night (4x) was the worst, thus I am begging for help.

Please, if anyone else has suffered through this and knows the cure please, please, please help me....

Thanks before hand, the drowning hosehead.

Cory......

My suggestion is to throttle back on the humidity setting....as low as you can go without discomfort.

Like me, I believe your condensation is coming from your exhaled breath.

You may also need to change masks. I tried the CL-2 and it was better that what I started with. I tried the Breeze....and could see quickly that it wouldn't work for me.

I'm now wearing the Invacare (Aura) nasal mask and it's doing well for me.
I use lanolin on my nares every night.....and not a light coat, either. I slop it on. It seals better that way.

I still have a little water sometimes....especially when I roll over on my back (which is a no-no, but I love it).

Hang in there....it gets better as you learn more. I passed my 1-yr mark last night. One year ago, my AHI was 2.5 on my first night. I achieved a 0.0 AHI last night. Most of the time, I'm below 0.5.

Hope this helps.

If the mask is the comfortlite and not the comfortlite II, the top hard plastic support can be adjusted so the headgear sits lower on your head. If it is the comfortlite II, you need to loosen the top strap a bit to keep it from popping off. You may also want to chop off the hard platic elbow at the top of the mask.

For the condensation, you might want to try the Aussie Heated Hose. Here is a link to discussions about it; viewtopic.php?t=5305

I use the Aussie heated hose with my CL 2. No rainout! I tried a couple of nights this past summer without the heated hose and thought I was going to drown. Okay, not literally, but ewwwww!

Now that the nights are getting cooler, I'm glad to have that hose to snuggle with!
