Glassgal, in a recent topic, got me thinking back to one of the most popular topics on this forum, where folks described themselves and what they do or have done in their lives. She got me looking back at it, because of a comment she made about my dove avatar and Wader's work as an architect. I had loved this topic and thought you all might like seeing it again, or maybe come up with newer ones. I couldn't resist linking to this most enjoyable topic.

Thanks for posting the link -- it was good to read it again! We are an interesting and diverse group, huh? I am surprised to see how many have faded away -- I hope that they are all ok!

I just read about everyone and found it fascinating! It just confirmed what I already suspected -- that there are lots of interesting, engaged-with-life people on this forum! Thanks for sharing your stories.

As for me, I spent the earlier part of my married life basically being a stay at home mother and wife-- also sold real estate part time then. Then when our two children were in high school, I went back to college and earned a Master's degree in business (my undergraduate degree was in math). When our two children went off to college, so did I to earn a Ph.D., which was granted when I was 50. I am now a university professor, a late blooming career which I dearly love. However, even with tenure, my job security is still under threat due to my severe asthma. The problem is that my (late onset) asthma is triggered by respiratory viral infections, and there are plenty of those among my students. I am hoping to continue teaching but it gets harder all of the time, it seems. When I see the "light bulb" come on in someone's mind/eyes, there are few things more rewarding. Well, maybe I should qualify that a little-- I tremendously enjoy the hugs of my four grandchildren!!

RESTED GAL:
Just a little about my interests and hobbies-- I have always had a dog since I was three years old. My current dog is a wonderful 9 year old Rottweiler. I could not ask for a better dog! He was about a year old and very well trained when I got him (from the pound!). Before, I was always afraid of Rottweilers. Now I just love them!

As for hobbies, I collect Victorian cameos, mostly from the 1800s. I especially enjoy the ones which are based on mythology. Someday I would like to develop an online jewelry store speciallizing in cameos and other types of estate jewelry.

Also, someday I am going to officially register for this forum!! I like the imaginative names you all have, just haven't thought of a good one for myself yet.

Again, thanks to you all for sharing your own life stories!

Ann, how about "Lady Cameo" for a name? Or something like that? Cool hobby! Opening a jewelry business sounds like great fun.

Ann, Just thought I would ask about a ring that I have. Instead of cameo it is a silloite (sp?). It was my late mother-in-law's grandmothers. It is made with the pink background and old gold ( the orangey looking gold). It is really beautiful. It is in my safety depoist box because I cannot wear it anymore - too small and I do not want to have it sized. Maybe I will have a granddaughter someday to give it to. Have never seen another one like this. Have you seen many like this?

I would like to respond more fully to your post but since it is off topic, others might not appreciate my responding -- so just a short response. It sounds like you might have either a pink shell cameo or a coral cameo. (Cameos take many forms.) It sounds really nice. Hold on to it for your family!

I am an unemployed chemist in the Louisville, KY area (BS Univ of Delaware) (first job Hercules Research Center, Wilmington, DE). I would love to work in this field again!
Currently (since 2001), I have sat at a reference desk for the Louisville Free Public Library. I lived 12 and 1/2 years in Germany (my husband workks at Fort Knox) where I was a community volunteer using the German I learned at the Universitaet of Heidelberg.

My current job is crap, to put it politely. And I've decided to look in earnest now. My sleep apnea, pre-treatment, really held me back from even thinking about changing jobs. I've got to change, though, for I'm suffering. I do so many things as a volunteer, things I love and am good at, but I'm not in a job doing any of those things. It's time I use some of this newfound energy and look.

I think your volunteer work in Heidelberg sounds mighty interesting.

Maybe your new avatar is symbolic of your search for a new job. Find something you love and make a living doing it... that's the best thing to do.
