Memory foam mattresses
Memory foam mattresses
For the past two months, I've been sleeping on a memory foam mattress (same thing as Tempur-Pedic, but a much cheaper brand from Coscto). I almost always wake up in exactly the same position I fell asleep in. I have found this very helpful for CPAP, because changing positions during the night often loosens the seal of my Opti-Life mask, creating leaks.
Not everyone is a fan of memory foam mattresses, but most people who have them, love them - including my wife and I. If you buy one, buy it from a place that will refund your money if you don't like it. Costco will happily take back this mattress and refund your money. Not everyone will.
In our research before buying, we read on various internet forums that some buyers complained about a chemical odor when they first take it out of the package, which lasts for a few days or a week. In our case, this odor was faint - certainly not enough to prevent us from sleeping on the mattress - and was gone in a few days.
If you're interested in which brand we bought and how much we paid, send me a PM. I'm happy to give you that info plus other info that might be helpful. I do not want to talk it up here and risk creating the appearance that I'm using this forum to make a few extra bucks. I'm not associated with the manufacturer or costco and have absolutely no incentive to recommend it. Other than I love it!
If you're not ready to buy a new mattress, you might consider a 2" memory foam mattress topper (if your fitted sheets will accomodate an extra 2"). My wife and I used one before getting the mattress and we both liked it a lot, though that was before my CPAP days so I don't know if it would be as good for CPAP as the mattress itself. Costco and many other stores carry various brands for $100-130.
Do any of you have memory foam mattresses, and has your experience been the same as mine?

Hi Ron
This is the info I am waiting to hear for long. I have been eyeing the one in WalMart, cost around $45. Total thickness is 2", 075, normal foam, the rest is in "egggy" shell. Anybody have experience with this WalMart Foam?
the Costco one I think cost about $150
I am now using a futon mattress and am looking to improve my CPAP life a bit. I hope we do not need a prescription to buy this memory foam mattress

it's funny that this topic should appear this morning...since i got up today i've just been thinking about turfing the mattress pad i use right now because i keep waking up with sore shoulders from being in one position for so long...it's a huge improvement over flipping around like a fish in the bottom of a boat, and i have cpap and pur-sleep to thank for that, but the other side of it is that even after 7 months i still wake up stiff and sore from not moving so much...
i've been intrigued with these things since they came out, but i, too, had heard about people finding them sweaty to sleep on...
hmmm, i'll have to give this more consideration

memory foam
I found the memory foam to be very comfortable when first going to bed, but would soon wake up from the heat it holds. Very hot! I had to remove the 2 inch topper from the bed and now I am comfortable again with the Select Comfort Number bed. The topper did not bother my husband the same way. He just thought it was too soft.
It is gone now.
It is gone now.

Yes, the heat issue has been a common complaint and concerned us, too.
We found a model that had a layer of heat-dissipating memory foam on top, and we have been very comfortable with it. I think most manufacturers of memory foam mattresses offer their own version of this, it's a bit more expensive than the basic memory foam mattress, but worth the extra robert deniros. (Costco's one is still quite affordable, though.)

Hmmm, I wonder if that's why I wake up in the middle of the night sweating? I have a memory foam mattress topper on my sleep number bed. Love the bed and have been thinking for a while of getting a thicker memory foam topper (the one I have is only 1"). But like Sharon, I also tend to wake up with a sore shoulder from sleeping in the same position all nite.
Oh so many things to consider - my head is just swimming -- too much for my sleep deprived brain - maybe better sleep on it

the pain in my shoulders does go away after a little while, but since it's one more type of pain to deal with (i have fms) it definitely contributes to how generally CRAPPY i feel when i drag my carcass out of bed...since i'm still waiting for the day when i actually wake up feeling remotely refreshed, it adds to my disappointment each morning that this is not to be "THAT DAY" wah wah wah...such a whiner i am!But like Sharon, I also tend to wake up with a sore shoulder from sleeping in the same position all nite.

i hear ya on the things to consider...what happened to just falling into bed and zonking out? oh yeah, that was a deadly endeavour...i guess this is still a better alternative!
thanks, roncron, for the info about the heat dissipating version...maybe i really will have to check this out now...why not spend more of my hard earned dollars? anything to get a good night's sleep!
i'm still in awe over the fact that i just have to think about an issue and someone discusses it on these boards the very next minute! what a wonderful resource this is!!
thanks again, roncron,

My 3 inch memory foam turned out to be just too hot for me!
Woke up in a sweat every night, and felt like it actually had a heater in it.
Or was that my hot flashes????
It is now stored UNDER my mattress, until I figure out what I'm gonna do with it. THought I MIGHT try it again, in winter.
Glad to hear they have tried to improve that some and it's working for some of you!
Now I have my eye on a Kingsdown adjustable bed, OMG...I'm in love with that thing! I'd have to sell one of the kids to pay for it, though. O well....

I have a Tempur-Pedic and love it. I don't find it particularly hot. I mean, I always get hot when I sleep, no matter where I am, so it's not worse than that.
I do wake up the same position as I went to sleep in most nights but I don't know if I would do that without the new mattress since I started CPAP after I got it.
I also have a Tempur-Pedic pillow made for side/back sleepers and it's great for sleeping on my side without messing with the mask. I may take it when I travel next time.
The chemical smell on mine lasted a couple weeks but my husband wouldn't let us sleep on it until we got a mattress cover since any liquid on the mattress (even sweat) can ruin it and void the warranty and we had a cat who liked to knock over the water from the night stand. So we sleep in the guest room on our old bed while the smell dissipated.
Our main reason for buying it is that we sleep very close together and most inner spring mattresses sag in the middle when you do that so we were getting back/neckaches from the old mattress sagging under us. The T-P mattress doesn't do that. We love it. Seriously, a year and a half later I still enjoy lying down on it every time. (Even though with the heat wave we're having, it's sort of squishy and hard to move on. It works best with an inside temperature below 75-80° and it's often hotter than that lately.)

Just kidding though. I had a really rough night Tuesday after they left for San Francisco. Went through an identity crisis! Who would I be if I weren't Denver and Danielle's mom????? Jeez - thank goodness I don't REALLY have to go thru that empty nester syndrome for another 10 years or more!!! Gives me time to figure out what *I* want to be when I grow up

Re: Memory foam mattresses
I just got one from Coscto.
Will try it tonight.
Will keep you posted.

sleep platform
I'm glad that the foam works so well for you. I can't stand it when my pillow warms up, I will turn it several times a night to get the cool side,so, I couldn't stand the heat retention of the foam. Like Catnapper we sleep on a Select Comfort (my wife at a setting of 40, me at 65) and it does not heat up, and one does not roll to the center. One thing for certain is that you need a good bed, the machine/mask is enough to deal with without any added drama. Regards
