Nasal Mask Successes??

Post by atruvirgo » Tue Jul 24, 2007 11:25 pm

I have concluded that I may be a nasal mask cpap'r. I have had little to no luck with pillows and really prefer not to wear a full face unless I can find one that is small enough. I have tried a comfortgel, comfortclassic and F&P 406. Has anyone tried a nasal mask that they had good success with and would recommend. I have been waiting for a Simplicty Mask but it hasn't arrived. Would love to hear other suggestions. How does the Aclaim 2, Activa etc compare to the newer nasal masks?

nasal masks

Post by Pad A Cheek » Wed Jul 25, 2007 5:35 am

Well I have loved the Activa for its ability to be tossed and turned in and that love sick octopus hangs on for dear life still giving me all of the air I can handle. It is a smidge large for a nasal mask, but I adapted to it very easily.

I am presently using a Soyala nasal mask which is as quiet as it gets. I cannot figure out what they do that is so different but it is quiet. It also has a very spouse friendly exhaust port position. The exhaust comes out more diffused than a blast. I like the way it feels on and the fit. Fitting may be tricky for this one because I had to order mine sight unseen and guess at the correct size for me. They tend to run small I think.
Overall I am very pleased with this mask. (Does need a PAC forehead, and PAC originals however to make it very comfy)

Hope that helps. I will warn you, many DMEs do not know this one exists. It is made by Somnotech not one of the big boys.

Karen

I'll also recommend the Activa. I am on CPAP for a little over a year, and own three. Very comfortable, though some users claim it to be a little larger and heavier than others. The active cell feature takes getting used to initially, because as you breath in and out, it responds in kind like a bellows. I'd say it took me two weeks to not find this action odd, even irritating; now it sort of lulls me to sleep.

I am sold on the activa as well. I have tried (14) different masks and keep going back to my "old faithful". I can sleep on my back or my side and my leak rate with a pressure of 8 stays around 25 with no major leaks whatsoever.

No matter what I try, I keep going back to this mask. You've probably read that the soyloa (sp?) is quieter, but I, nor my hubby, are bothered whatsoever by the little noise it makes. And it does not hisssssss....like the full-face quattro! Just my two cents worth!

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

I would love this mask except for the big indent on the bridge of my nose it leaves. I keep it as lose as possible to allow the cushions to expand, etc.. but i still wake up with a big indent. It's so deep, it sometimes takes a half day to go away Even tried moleskin as someone suggested, but no luck.

Even though it is big, it's quite comfy. I keep this one as my back up.

LOL, mine is average I would say. Never had such bad indents with the older mirage masks.

I use a comfort lite 2 nasal cushion. It does fit over the nose but it's not as large as the nasal mask I used in my sleep study. The hose rotates so I can sleep on either side. It's ight too. I wish the exhaust was more diffused though, and it seems to dry my eyes a bit.

It is interesting how many masks one needs to try and there seems always to be the wish for one just a bit better. Another great benefit of this forum.

Guess I'll jump on the Activa bandwagon, too! It is my favorite. Pop it on, no leaks, no muss, no fuss. It just fits. And stays fit. My second favorite is the CL2, switching between the pillows and the simple cushion. I really like the small size of the simple cushion, and I don't get a high leak rate, but higher than with my Activa.

Well I understand your frustration if you are looking for a petite or small mask. I have tried many including the much loved Activa. Unfortunately the only nasal mask that comes close for me is the F&P406.
The smallest size in the Activa is the STANDARD and it is just to big for me. I am not a little person I just have a little face I guess. Not much room between the nose and the upper lip and I don't have a long chin. I am about to try the Quattro if I can get it in the XS and if it works for me I will let you know.

All of your posts have been very helpful! I am looking forward to more input from others on their nasal mask choices. I am currently using the F&P 406 Petite. I am finding that is cuts in to my nose as my nose creeps inside. maybe a 407 would work. Sometimes the silicon seal pulls away and gets me in the underside of my nose. Hmmmmmm anyone know if there is a sizing template for the Activa and also how deep it is.

Nasal mask

Post by jerryv » Wed Jul 25, 2007 9:22 pm

I am using an OptiLife pillow which is working pretty well. I have Bells Palsy on the left side of my face which makes fitting diificult since my muscles don't move or respond on that side of my face. I don't know if that is the same as a nasal mask - I've only been on CPAP 2 weeks.

After using 3 mask, optilife, profile lite and comfort lite 2, this masks did not work well for me, leaking all the way. Optilife comes off quite easily, perhaps my head shape. Profile lite leaves marks on my nose bridge and leaking badly during higher pressure. The best result was comfort lite 2 (direct seal) but still it is leaking according to encore report, leaks >= 50, AHi 4.9.

I am going back to Activa, just make a purchase. During my cpap trial with activa (large size) was doing great, no leaks except I can't wear for too long. After 2 weeks of using, my upper lips are painful. I am not aware of any sizing template for Activa.

I wonder what I am going to do with all this masks.
