I like to ride a recline bike for warm-up. Hop ball for fun, got a workout dvd with the ball and yoga for stretching and relaxation. Have lost a few pounds but not many.

biking and swimming, gardening, does camping count?

Post by bast » Thu May 24, 2007 6:15 am

hi ~ nice off topic topic!

i love riding my bike, swimming, dancing, gardening (though i am a lazy digger) and i wish camping counted as exercise...

i just received one of those quiet push-wheel lawn mowers (the old-fashioned kind without a motor) as a gift, and imagine i will find that to be satisfying on a cool morning but i haven't tried it out yet - gonna have to this weekend.

the key for me seems to be some kind of interaction with nature - i can't make myself go to the gym or the university pool and suffer fluorescent lights. it just kills my buzz completely. by comparison, on my bike, i ride along with a huge goofy grin. love it!!!

have fun finding your own pleasure in movement!

I climb stairs at work during lunch for 30 minutes a day, nordictrack or rowing machine on the weekends.

I used to do Heineken bicep curls but they give me a headache now so I stopped doing them ... now I just do squats on the sofa in front of the TV.
i like to do lunges...i lunge for the bed, i lunge for the couch...

lol, just wanted to keep up with dreamstalker and goofproof

but seriously, i used to love to in-line skate, swim and walk for miles...now i'm trying to get back into walking and doing the elliptical...

rooster, i hear ya...i did lose about 5 lbs almost immediately after receiving my diagnosis, and i like to think it was the weight of the guilt, shame and embarrassment i've felt all my life for not being able to keep up...you know what they say, 'what you resist is what you get' and giving up that erroneous self-belief that i had brought my rapid 40lb weight gain on myself was so healthy and liberating, now getting back to being active is something i have to focus on in a positive way, not the extreme negativity i was indulging in for the 3 years before my diagnosis...thanks for acknowledging that, rooster

I've been training in shudokan karate 2-3 times a week for a bit over a year now. I haven't lost any weight yet (...) but my wind and endurance has improved immensely. I'm hoping that now that I'm a few weeks into therapy I'll have more energy to step up my exertions.

In fact, I passed a milestone of sorts this week. I was able to get up with the alarm (no snooze buttons for me!) and do my warmup routine from class before starting my day. I'm hoping I can move that into a regular habit. As well, I'm getting a treadmill in a couple weeks so I can start adding some walking into the days I don't train.

Well on a more serious note -- you guys are leaving out the most fun exercise of all ... SEX!

A good sign that PAP treatment is working (at least for men) is that your libido from younger days gone by returns.
President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

Between doing that, pushing my luck, and the time I spend counting chickens...I don't have as much time to ride as I'd like.

Nobody left the sex jokes out, I was just too tired to get to this thread yet. And now I have to sit down and pant awhile....

Oh yeah. I enjoy sex with Val Kilmer, George Clooney, the pizza delivery guy, and the copier repair man.

Please don't tell them. Wears me out something fierce. I wake up sweating all the time.

I USED to like contra dancing. But I haven't been able to keep up with that for years. Maybe someday.

My current form of exertion involves cleaning out 50 years of hoarding by an elderly friend. 2800 square foot house for one hunchbacked little old lady who never met a piece of paper she could part with.... I dunno if I've lost any weight, but my back and arms are killing me...

BTW, the answer is NO. The question of yesterday was: Are homemade apricot preserves SUPPOSED to be purple? The amount of stuff I've thrown away... tsk.... People, clean out your cupboards before someone else has to do it for you. Unless, of course, you hate your children, in which case, do save every little stupid receipt from 1928 onwards and make sure you don't empty the cat litter box for a decade or so....

Cheers,
B.

BTW, Bast, I'm thinking of buying a reel mower. Upgrade from my wussy electric power mower, which was the upgrade from the smokey gas power mower.

I'm hankering after this one:

What did you get? And how much do you love it yet? I've been reading great things online about the new generation reel mowers. My small lawns should be no sweat for one of these babys. Maybe sweat for me - but that's the point, right?

Cheers,
B.

I am of the belief that you will only keep up exercise if you can find something you ENJOY, and any supplemental exercise to make the enjoyable exercise easier.

I do Taiji, which is good for balance and keeping the joints moving, but doesn't burn much calories. Easy martial arts training too, if you aren't in a rush to learn.

I like to hike in the Cascade mountains, but I hike with a fairly slow group so I find it doesn't burn THAT much calories, although after 9-14 miles sometimes more get burned than consumed. Nice for getting photos though.

My passion and most effective exercise is cycling. Mountain biking for the last few decades. What is known as "aggressive cross country" or "all mountain". In our steep terrain that definitely burns calories and gets the heart at the "explode out of chest" range most of the time, while keeping a big grin on my face.

I also occasionally ride our recumbent exercise bike that is in front of the TV, but thats mainly used by my wife.

Try LOTS of sports....something is bound to turn out to be fun and happen to be good exercise at the same time. There are a LOT of options out there these days.
Remember:
What you read above is only one data point based on one person's opinion.
I am not a doctor, nor do I even play one on TV.
Your mileage may vary.
Follow ANY advice or opinions at your own risk.

What about yoga?

Post by roster » Fri May 25, 2007 5:03 pm

What about yoga? Does it burn calories?

I am regularly visiting my 85-year old mom in an assisted living facility and have become aware of how many elderly people fall. For many these falls make their last days on earth miserable (and shorten their lives).

I have been told yoga can dramatically improve balance (and everything else in life according to the fanatics).

If you have tried it, I would like to hear your comments whether you are fanatic or not.

I've been going to Curves for almost two years now and lost the 20 lbs I gained from having kids (apparently chasing them around doesn't count as exercise @$%E%!).

I like because is is 30 minutes, in and out, easy and gets cardio and muscle work done at the same time. Great for those of us who hate exercise.

I'm thinking of getting a push mower to get my husband moving!

Wistful
Pressure 7-9 C-Flex 3 AHI 1.6
Mirage Swift
Marine Mask Seal so my mask doesn't leak
Polygrip Strips so my mouth doesn't leak
Di-Oval for aerophagia
Eye drops for air coming out my tear ducts
Pur-Sleep so I can fall asleep despite all of the above.
