FACIAL MARKS

Post by bigblacklexus » Sat Apr 21, 2007 1:12 am

Hello everybody.I am a relatively new cpap user and I have several question that I am sure that i will ask over a period of time. I have been on the resmed s8 vantage for about 2 month now but the problem is that my face mask leaves marks on my face. I have tried the resmed mirage and also the Fisher Paykel masks as well but i still seem to get these marks on my face. I clean the mask daily and I dont belive the straps are too tight. Its really a pain to see marks that dont go away easily. I am African American and on my skin it actualy looks like a dark purple bruise. Is this why people switch to nasal pillows? has any one else had this issue as well? Are there any non prescription skin creams that can take these facial out line marks out or will I have to see a dermatologists. (the facial marks have been there about 2 weeks and are very annoying because they are noticable). This is my first of many posts to come because I can see where this bored can be a real asset......thanks for your anticipated responses:)

Marks on face

Post by kteague » Sat Apr 21, 2007 5:03 am

Hi. Welcome to the board.

If your marks are from the straps, padding them can help. If you're not inclined to make something yourself, PADACHEEK products are used by quite a few people here (including myself). You can get them designed for particular mask models. They are supplied by a trusted forum member who goes by PADACHEEK.

Now, if the marks are from your masks, that's a different story. Pillow style masks would help in that respect.

Marks that last two weeks seem excessive. No wonder you are looking for solutions. Have you told your provider your mask is not working out and let them see why? They should provide you with options. You may want to look around on cpap.com just to see the different styles of mask and headgear. Not all providers make available every style. Best wishes in finding something that works for you.

Kathy

I'm closing in on one month with a CPAP and I wake each morning with marks on my face. Fortunately, mine are gone in about 1 1/2 hours. I'm 64 so these things are expected. I use ResMed's Mirage Swift Nasal Pillow system. My marks are from the straps and not from the nasal pillows.

I would first contact your sleep doctor. They have surely seen this before. Next, contact your DME provider. Hopefully, they can solve your problem.

I am using the Pad A Cheeks and they eliminate the marks.

mine are made from super soft micro-fleece, which i've never used in hot weather, so i can't say, but she makes cotton, silk etc....she lists all the fabrics and colours on her website, where she also lists all the choices of interfaces she can make pads for...she's awesome!

I like the fleece in the cooler weather. I use the cotton in the warm weather. The silk makes it feel like you aren't even wearing headgear! I seem to be allergic to the headgear on all the masks so for me Padacheeks are an absolute must! The best part is I just throw them in the washer and hang to dry.

I am very sensitive to heat when I am sleeping so I am using a set of microfiber PAD A CHEEKS. They actually make the headgear cooler because they wick moisture (sweat).

Thank you Kathy .Thank you all. My marks are under my nose and also between my eyes which are definatly from the mask. I may have to take the advice of using nasal pillows instead.

Some have used mole skin (on the mask!) where the sore spots are. It helps protect the skin. You can find it by the foot products in most drug stores.

oh! yeah, those marks won't be addressed by padacheeks! sorry...

i had those same issues with the nasal mask, no matter what size or type i used and did, indeed, have to switch to nasal pillows which i like sooooooooooooo much better anyway...i have the comfortlite 2 which is extremely comfortable--i use the direct seal nasal pillow--though the headgear is a little heavy on the forehead, where, incidentally, i do use a padacheek pad to eliminate marks...i have also just received my new twilight np interface which i'm dying to try once i get the ok from my ENT after my recent nasal surgery...lots of people on here love the breeze, also, as there is nothing at all on the face....there are some great options in nasal pillows and if you have sensitive skin like i do, they are a great way to go

good luck!

When I read that masks are making marks on someone's face, I tend to think the mask is too tight.....or maybe the wrong size AND too tight.

Have you considered trying a Full Face mask? The ResMed Ultra Mirage FF is the one I use and it is VERY comfortable.

Best wishes,

Den
