therefor, the bottom line is you don't have to tell someone in open forum that you've left them a private message.
If they know where to look (assuming they do not get email notifications, or those email notifications go to spam.
OTOH, it may be a courtesy to newbies, to guide them a bit.

Probably allied with this topic, I sense the real issue is that the public "community" really want to know the content of these "private" messages.

I think this thread may have convinced me to turn off my PM notifications.
The people who confuse "entomology" and "etymology" really bug me beyond words.

THANK you. now about turning off notifications, i couldn't find how to do that. i wanted to be able to see if'n i could, but i didn't see anything in my brief look around.
To set notification preferences:
User Control Panel / Board Preferences / Edit Notification Options

with all due respect to software designers (hi, palerider!)
How DARE YOU!??!?!?!

I'm a systems administrator, we complain about software 'designers' as much or more than anyone else :D

Though I have been throwing together a few web pages for an organization I'm working with lately, not at all my strong suit though.

I turned off email notifications years and years ago.
Reason #43, I don't stay logged on here ALL Day long.
Notifications only appear when you log on.
If you browse ALL Day long without logging on, you don't see them.
Actually, you'd see notifications anytime you brought up a new screen, whether it's clicking to open a thread, or going to another page in a thread.

The only way you'd never see the notification is if you only browsed the front page, without clicking on anything at all :)

thanks, everyone! let's keep this conversation going. and i hope the newer users chime in as well.

so far, it seems to me, what we've discovered is that you don't need email notification that you have a new message here or a pm.
I too turned off email notifications, I don't need the forum pestering me like a needy child "hey, come back, you've got a message from someone who you don't care what they say anyway! WHIIINE!!" I wander by when I want to, when there aren't more important things sucking up my time :)

this is, of course, dependent on whether someone quotes what you've said in a response to you.
Yeah, you'll never know if julie replies 'to you' since she's never figured out the quote (") button, but then, you can't really tell WHAT she's posting about half the time anyway.

well, if the foo shits. Though I'd wager that many of us feel that 'villain' is too mild a term.

Now, about 96 hours later, I have not heard from him again, and have no expectation of continuing that particular private discussion unless he initiates it.
Take the hint, and go away!

My public post that there is a private message is simply to call attention so the user can look for how to get the PM awaiting.
Which, you know, pops up right there at the top left of *EVERY SINGLE PAGE*.

But, then, how can Zonker pester you as effectively?

I'm hoping he'll have to tell me in a thread how and when to check my PMs and then I can play dense. Or be dense. Whichever comes first or is easiest for me at the time.

I've never been one of the cool, popular kids here who gets a bunch of PMs anyway. I recently shut down my Twitter and Instagram and hid my YouTube vids, so technically I'm not sure I even still exist.

And people lately seem generally to prefer to chew me out in public, much like the days when I used to live in Brooklyn. That kind of thing just makes me feel at home, ya know?

Sometimes now, since the pandemic, just for fun, I'll pause for a quarter of a second after a traffic light turns green, just so I can hear the validation of all the car horns blowing impatiently behind me. Or I'll meander slowly and aimlessly through the middle of the aisles of a nearby Walmart with a cart to get some attention and interaction that way. Occasionally I simply need that kind of immediate public affirmation.

WAY WAY much ado over nothing.

Hundreds, maybe a thousand words spilt over a couple of very short (ten or so words) innocuous public posts that caused no harm.

Talk about a colossal waste of time indeed.

Please check your PMs.

Not that I sent you anything--I didn't. But I thought a friendly reminder might be in order, just in case someone else has sent you one.

OK. Sure. I can do that. Should we talk about that subject in this thread, in another thread, or in PMs?

And how many electrons do you suggest we invest in that?

I don't believe you're a villain because you routinely post messages, telling others to check their private messages.

You're a villain because you're dishonest.

Then Slobber sets up for the old threadlock-gambit play! Interesting move, that. Game getting too serious; Lazarus leaves the thread.

FIFY: How many electrons do you suggest we waste in that?

None, already wasted/invested WAY WAY too much on a nothing-burger.

You could set a daily reminder on your phone to check your email for notifications about PM's from cpaptalk.com. Or maybe a fax.

Why not a Batphone? Under a cake dome? Answered by an elderly gentleman who lives in the basement?
