Airsense 11 - Central Apneas While Awake
Airsense 11 - Central Apneas While Awake
Long-time CPAP user who recently upgraded (?) from a Dreamstation 2 Auto to a Resmed AirSense 11 Auto. Although central apneas were never a problem in the past, the Airsense has been reporting a large numper of centrals - most of which "ocurred" while I am certain I was awake and unable to fall back to sleep. The new machine is very comfortable and my settings (10.6-14) are consistent with what they were with my Dreamstation 2 and earlier Respironics models.
Is there something I'm missing about Resmed machines or is my machine (I've had it for about a week) likely to be defective? I've tried, but was unable, to attach a representative Oscar daily report.

Re: Airsense 11 - Central Apneas While Awake
No brand of machine can tell whether you're awake or not. When we're awake, it's common to pause between breaths or to hold our breath (e.g., while concentrating). Any pause or breath-holding that lasts for 10 seconds or longer will be flagged by any machine as a CA.
That's not to say the machines are the same. The algorithms for ResMed machines are a little more aggressive than those for PR machines. PR machines don't raise pressure as quickly in response to flow limitations, snores, and even obstructive events. But if all the differences you're noticing concern time when you're awake, that shouldn't matter.
Are you using EPR, and did you use Flex with your PR machine?
The forum site maxes out regularly in its attachment capacity. Try using an image-hosting site like Imgur for your Oscar screenshot; then provide a link.

Yes, things come up in clusters, don’t they?

Except the huge cluster came over a two hour period when I was awake. I have trouble believing my resting breathing could be interpreted as central apneas.

Let’s take a look at an Oscar chart. Please also include a zoomed in image that captures a number of your waking CAs in maybe a 12 minute stretch.
Just so you know, the things I was referring to were topics in threads that come up at the same time, as Chicago Granny was pointing out.

Believe it. It happens all the time. Hold your breath for 10 seconds...that's essentially a 10 second central apnea.
No air is moving because you are holding your breath. We pause our breathing all the time while awake and don't realize we are doing it.
Below is an example of a truckload of central apneas all flagged while I was awake and I know for sure I was awake.
I was battling a big old insomnia monster and didn't even remotely fall asleep until after 1:30.

No, what you're unaware of is that awake breathing is notoriously irregular, and your machine is just letting you know about it.
Just ignore it.

Guilty as charged. As a long-time cpaptalk member (albeit absent for many years), I assumed, incorrectly, that the sticky notes didn't apply to me. I did read them after the first reply to my original post, but was reluctant to give my phone number and upload images to a site I knew nothing about.palerider wrote: ↑Thu Apr 06, 2023 11:28 pmNo, what you're unaware of is that awake breathing is notoriously irregular, and your machine is just letting you know about it.

Your experience is similar to Pugsy's and, I'm sure, many others. Resmed's software must diagnose centrals much more frequently than the three Respironics machines I've had in the past. With Respironics, I rarely had centrals, but now - awake or asleep - I've got a lot (relatively) of centrals and few OAs or Hs

I wasn’t referring to CPAP talk.com (I’ve been a member since 2005) or CPAP.com. I was referring to the image repository which I had never heard of before.

imgur.com should allow you to register for free without giving it any phone number. And imgur.com is what a lot of us use for posting images over here.
Do note: imgur does have a "pay" account as well as a freebie. I use the freebie and the main difference as far as I can tell is pop-up ads when you are doing things like uploading images. So far there's been nothing to indicate there is a quota for what I can upload over there. And copying the bbcode link for an image over there and pasting it over here is really easy.

Imgur had so many problems with spam that they now require a phone number for verification of new accounts.
